I enjoyed reading this book but I couldn't help but wonder why she didn't include Laura Nyro among her subjects. Laura Nyro was a musical genius and feminist. She also exerted a big influence on Joni Mitchell musically. Weller mentions Nyro several times in glowing terms, though, so it's certain that there exists a great deal of respect.
in the USA no...women starved themselves just to receive the right to vote...women couldn't own land...Power to the people...keep fighting for our rights I was a kid only 12 in 68 when the men landed on the moon. I missed the hippie generation sometimes I wish I had an order sister.
Reading Sheila's book is like wading through a very cluttered attic. The stories are there, but she packs so many asides and insignificant details into each paragraph that it's hard to follow her writing. Newspapers may be dying, but at least their reporters knew how to leave readers with one new idea per sentence. "Girls Like Us" could've been a bigger seller if Sheila had had a more-diligent editor.
fuck feminism! people want to be so independant and liberate themselves from everything, that is has come to a point were people are just selfisch and bitter and lonely, and dont even know what theyre fighting for anymore. at the end theyre just fighting for priveleges, lonely and unhappy and bitter!
you know, people say they want freedom and independence, when actually the only thing they want is friendship and love and companionship?... its just a cry for attention...
@backtobasicsman - feminism is not about anything other than women being equal to men (not on men's terms or based on what the patriarch thinks is important, but for respect to exist on a basic level for the choices women make for themselves) - it's as simple as that. obviously, you're speaking out of ignorance and lack of education on the topic, and for some reason YOU are the one who is bitter and angry.
fantastic book! A great read for those who went through the 60s, wondered what it was like, and from someone who personally knows two to the "Girls", right on the money. Buy it and enjoy!
Are you the Shiela Weller who wrote "Hantzel and Gretel in Beverly Hills"?

Sheila, I feel it's my duty to tell you, it's time to adjust to your age. You try to be Peg O ' My Heart when you're...oh, never mind.

A. Should have been better edited - too long and wordy.
B. Too gossipy - not enough about songwriting, creation of the albums, etc.

Grew up listening to all of the women, as my mother was a huge fan of each. Look forward to reading the book...
