I LOVE our Edwardian house, but would love to be able to chill in my dining room without massive cracks staring at me making me feel povety-stricken. Time for a positive change! Sorry skilled workmen. I know you didn't have B&Q in 1910. Time to go!
I am removing the dining room/living room ceilings in my 60 year old house. Beside soot there were lots of mouse nests, chewed up paper and insulation and lots of their little black turds all up inside there. After I torn a section down I would run the wide nozzle of my shop vac up between the joists as far as it would reach before proceeding to take down the next section. This extra step up front really payed off in the end and kept me from wearing all that filth in my hair.
The resolution isn't good enough to show the volume of soot that did fall, trust me when I say that there was a long session of shop-vac'ing after we were done. The ceiling itself was very porous due to some water damage in the mid 90's and that was why it doesn't look like a huge effort. Also, the new saw my wife bought me did a crazy good job and I laser marked the joists and cut right next to them so that what was left would have gravity working on it too. I assume it wasn't asbestos.
