  • Hey! Bet The General likes that!!

  • Hey that only spells JACKSON ! ;)

    I freaking looove Sufjan !

Tried showing him to one of my friends, you know what she said ?

    "theres no point to him."

She was in the hospital for the next three months ! Hehee ;)

  • I like how it's the perfect balance of bad high-school pep band and awesome indie rock.

  • p[o]op

  • haha "J-A-C-K-S-O-N, what does that spell?"

    "JACKSONVILLE!"

  • My favorite song by him, is for the windows in paradise, my older sister actually showed him to me.

  • Nice- he's wearing an Illini shirt.

  • @JBsaywhat wow lol

  • better than the original

  • Sweet change of instruments and beat from the original. Dig it.

  • haha, i live in jacksonville, the exact town he's singing about. I wish the place was as great as this song. But it is a nice little town of about 20,000, and can walk anywhere.. :DD

  • anybody heard of "welcome wagon"?

construced and produced by sufjan.. they're a religious couple that sounds just that sufjan.. NEED to check them out. AMAZING

also check out Paper route. goos alternative record out right now!!

  • I have heard the Welcome To The Welcome Wagon and you're right I was BLOWN AWAY!

I was about to discard at first (they look dorky ahaha) it but then I saw Sufjan's name and gave it a try. I had one of those "holy shit!" moments hahah

  • oh btw, cheers for the paper route suggestion! really cool! I sort of sound like a Coldplay meets Kasabian meets idiot Pilot =) Thanks!

  • Try singing the chorus to "Les Fleur" by Minnie Ripperton over the start of this. Fit's perfectly.

  • he is a genius

  • You guys might change your mind about this song if you ever visit Jacksonville, IL. jk.......but seriously I grew up there

  • i want him to come to maryland so bad, hes my favorite musician of all time!

  • Can anybody tell me what key this is in?

  • Capo 3- D, Bm, F, Am7

  • i think i have this version on my project playlist thing. who knows if theres a CD from this show?

  • Insanely catchy...how does he keep doing this?

  • he's kinda sexy hahha

  • Hahaha So want to marry him.

    RIGHT NOW

  • @h3artxcor3x kind of??!???!!?????!!?!???

  • Good version!

  • this isnt as good as the recorded version

  • yeah saw him in sydney, where is his next live concert?

  • Interesting arrangement, I wish he would come to australia!

  • ...he did!

  • Not to western australia he probably went to melbourne and sydney it sucks cos bands like bloc party and beck never come over!

  • Yeah it was Sydney he came to...Aw thats no fair I hope you get to see him one day

  • I must have seen about a dozen different performances of this song on YouTube and each one has a different arrangement. This guy just oozes talent.

  • I love all of this man's beautiful music!

  • words cannot express my newfound adoration for this man! i just discovered him by watching little miss sunshine the other day, and now i'm getting every song i can get my hands on. this song is brilliant, all his songs are.

  • I agree man. I'm doing the same!

  • go go Sufjan! ;)

  • Gimme a......S!!!!

    priceless

    human

    Sufjan Stevens

  • Best Sufjan Stevens song

  • My current favourite song.

  • nice albums!

  • sufjan insists on a hip hip hooray!

    what a genius.

  • God damn! Where was I on campus when he came? Probably at the Union passed out on one of the couches in the South Lounge. Damn!

    Yeah Sufjan!

    Yeah Illinois!

  • this guy is really talented. too bad no ones heard of him

  • You'd be surprised by the number of people who have heard of him. I think Sufjan's the type of artists who can only be shared with certain people :)

  • @lovexdestroy completely agree.

  • pretty sweet, I must say. :D

  • I like the recorded version much more but this is decent

  • beautiful :)

  • who would like me to post the album version(no vid just audio)? pm my page if u would request it.

  • yes please, thanks!

  • i heard this song on the CSI intro on five US

and i just had to have it

    5/5 thx for upload

  • exactly the same, had to find out the name and i actualy really like it as a complete song not just the jingly jangly bit from FiveUS. Guys reallys good, glad i found out his name. like his other stuff aswell now.

  • the timbre isnt very distinct on en electric and using a capo wouldnt have that much of a difference than a barre chord, seeing as u would have open strings anyway...

    btw i love this song

  • Jacksonville is way better live.

  • this is the dopest song i've heard in a long time. I like hip hop i like u2 i like jeff buckley I like mozart but this song won't top a chart but it'll speak to your heart and it won't subliminaly ask you to spark a mind wasting wanna lanna hannah montana sux

  • hah i didnt mean to put all my stuff right next to eachother my bad...

  • i live in jacksonville illinois and i live right by the places he talks about;nichols park, dewey street, etc. but i dk why someone would write a song about us lol

  • but mate, he does seem a little repressed.Does he know god just loves his music?

  • if i were single i would SO stalk him. what presence!

  • amazing performance of a brilliant song.

  • Yeah, but there are some chords you just can't do with a barr chord. Why make it more difficult on yourself? That seems a little foolish!

  • too good! this guy has talent

  • This is my favorite !!!!!

  • mikebtko- youve said it well...

  • why is his music so BEAUTIFUL?? he makes me cry every time i listen to his music. i even had to put him away from my ipod

  • you are such a wuss!

  • suck it, daneo.

  • In a world of illiterate musical messes emerges this unique musician, well that is just so talented and so impressive. I discovered him only a month ago. Wow, I'm glad I didn't miss him altogether, you know the music industry is brutal and not all the really great ones get heard; they're bullied from sight and sound. Thank you Sufjan Stevens!

  • Truly a master with music. I wish I could write like this.

  • what a guy

  • Yeh think he is a worship leader at some church in america somwhere! :)

  • If I ever have a lot of money I would enjoy making a very inaccurate documentary about him.

  • are you an idiot? do you know what a capo is even used for?

  • does he say niggers bark at 2:29

  • no he said hes not afraid of nichol's park.

  • Cool. I don't know why he picked J'ville to write about, but I grew up on Vandalia, just down the street from Nichols Park(I used to ride the ferris wheel and go to the pool and fish in the ponds just about summer every day at Nichols park... I even got bit by a turkey at the bird estuary). Cool to see this. Tons of memories.

  • Why would anyone use a capo on an electric guitar?

  • Cause he wants too?

  • are you serious? for the same reason anyone would use a capo on any other guitar! why you gotta hate on sufjan?

  • why wouldn't he? is there some no capo on electric guitars rule that i havn't heard of?

  • we're not stupid, we're just lazy.

  • There is something called a capo that, you apparently haven't heard of.

  • I'm pretty sure Sufjan has heard of barre chords. Using a capo allows him the use of all his fingers, and gives him more freedom. It is easier to make embellishments on open chords than barre chords, so he uses the capo to make those open chords in the right key.

  • well he appears to be fingering an open D chord. and that is the point of a capo. allowing you to transpose open chords up without having to stress your neck or waste time by retuning it three half steps up.

Try a open D chord, open C chord, open G chord, three half steps up. For the record barring chords doesn't give the same timbre as open strings. but I'm sure you have no clue what that means.

  • for the record, I'm a music performance major. and if the song blows make something better.

  • fair enough then lol.

  • music performance colonel? wow

  • Love the variation on the guitar. And I think Sufjan is married and has kids. There's a picture of them on his Christmas cd.

  • umm.. it spells jackson.. haha

  • it's official.

sufjan IS the man of my dreams.

    xoxo

  • Tour england, foolish man!

  • sick !

  • AWESOME. hope he comes back to norcal this summer!

  • I live in Jacksonville Illinois...It's a great city, Sufjan was smart to write a song about its history.

  • you live in jacksonville, do you or did you go to jhs??

  • this is one of my favorite songs! proud to be from Illinois, too :p

  • kieranedling and andrewdewey , the first line means that by running to Jacksonville, the black man had a better life coming becuase he was on the railroad. It's not offensive at all. It's talking about Illinois' history.

  • Hell yeah, props to my hometown.

  • haha ur from j-ville?? i live here now!

  • I saw him live and the man has talent. His band was tight as can be... one of the best sounding shows I've ever seen.

  • So fucking awesome. I just got into this guy. Didnt he produce all his stuff himself?! such a cool influence to me since that's what I'm doing.

  • kieranedling you dont have to be such an jerk about it. if someone doesnt know what that line means it, the first time he hears it it CAN be offensive, and just because someone doesnt know something from history doesnt make them a moron especially if there are full on ASKING about it.

  • Thank you, tiny. I WAS just asking. Maybe I was asking in the wrong way...

  • Great song - wow this guy is talented!

  • I am writing this from Chicago. what the fuck does the opening sentence mean for starters? It's rpetty fucking offensive if you dont know exactly what it means.

  • If you are from Chicago and have no idea what he is talking about then let me first call you a moron. Secondly if you are African American, then its perhaps even worse that you don't understand. Jacksonville was a major stop on the underground railroad.

  • OK. point taken.

  • hes kind of flat here . . . oh well.

    still a fantastic song!

  • this is interesting because he's playing the electric guitar part rather than strumming the acoustic or plunking the banjo.

  • love this man sooooooooooo much

  • He's fantastic live. I saw him play in LA a few weeks ago.

  • Got tickets to see him in 2 weeks in Barcelona!! To say I´m excited is a massive understatement!

  • im a brazilian fan, hoping that, someday, he´ll come and play in Rio de Janeiro

  • oooo many thanks friend!

  • man i wanna see him play come feel the illinois can anyone help me?

  • omg, he is amazing.

  • is sufjan straight?

  • Pretty certain he is.

  • it doesn't matter, either way. He's a musical genius.

  • Agreed.

  • wow, you're pretty angry about that guy thinking that sufjan was married with kids...regardless of the fact that he doesn't. But..hey, gotta stand up for something.

  • he's a pretty strong Christian, so it can almost be assumed.

  • Sufjan Rules!!

  • great this guy!
