It's something of both. ALF is working up his memories on Melmac in this cartoon. To begin of every episode he was sitting in the garage of the Tanners in front of a type writer and gives a little intro to the following episode.

Thank you for posting this! This is one of those slept on/forgotten cartoons from a bygone era of stellar cartoons. Back when you had so many choices and channels to choose from on Saturdays. Ahhh, Saturday mornings on NBC along with Foofur, The Karate Kid, etc. I wish someone would get the thumb outta their rear and release this along with Alf Tales on DVD, or at least put Boomerang back on the air and just fill it with old school cartoons. (Exit stage left...)

In the early episodes, Melmacian was pronounced 'Mel-MAY-shun'; then for some reason they re-recorded it. I think the first version scans better.
