To the contrary, Assad was worst than Saddam : he killed more than 20 000 civilians in Hama in 1982, he supported far right militias in Lebanon against progressists and Syria remained a poor country even if Syrians are really a great people. But Assad wanted only to stay in power with his sect, the Alawis. Anyway, he has nothing to do with the real Baathist ideology which is a progressive one.
@Panjsheri65 really? i always thoght assad was less oppressive, i mean i happen to know a guy who supports him, and its funny how you dont heard much of killings in syria unlike iraq
@muimrm well, thats your opinion, but i respect it, i wouldnt call saddam a true baathi, but you may be right. i for one dont like saddam for the bad things he did, but i respect him for the good things he did for his people and Iraq. i do find baath party to be ideal and good for the arab world if implemented properly as well as giving minorities of other religions equal rights (like iraqi assyrians, etc, and syriac catholics for example)
I think that Saddam, even if he was a dictator, was the only Arab leader to modernize his country. He succesfully industrialized Iraq and all Iraqis were able to go to school. He also successfully resisted to the Iranian regime who wanted to divide Iraq into sectarian entities or to make an Shia Republic. Americans invaded Iraq because it was a threat to their domination in the Middle East, they didn't want freedom or democracy but only oil and pro-us dictatorships.
@Panjsheri65 i kind of agree, but he could have helped his people, he made them hate him, thats why in 2003 no soldier fought for him, cuz they had nothing to fight for, unlike hitler, his people loved him and supported him.
The chaos in Iraq was primarily caused by the Baathists, who were mostly Sunni, and by pro-Iranian militias such as the Mehdi Army. The US failed to incorporate the Baathists into the new regime, and instead it supported a stupid policy of "Baath eradication." The Baathists were causing most of the real damage to the US in Iraq. The Wahabbis were only blowing up Iraqis most of the time.
@availableusername86 dude, the only people who are to blame are saddam and bush, dont blame the syrians. btw, the americans deserved the damage they got, they had no right to go into iraq. and dont try to defend the americans, they ruined iraq!!! i could go all day with this but i have no time, good day!!
The Syrian regime has absolutely no apparent interest in the Baathist cause. The only thing that dictates Syrian policy is the will to preserve the regime. This often means pursuing policies that contradict the actual Baathist goals. The Syrian regime is not really a Baathist regime but it is just a sectarian autocracy that veils itself with the secular Baath. The Syrian regime is no more secular than my ass (this is a Syrian way of expression, meaning that it is not really secular).
This is not Saddam's anthem; this is the Syrian Baath anthem. The Syrian Baath was enemy to the Iraqi Baath and each called the other traitor and blah.
@availableusername86 yeah, talk about irony, yet i could understand why al-assad didnt like saddam. but although he did do some good things for his people, like modernization and improve literacy
@slimv29 The Baath Party's so-called goal is to merge all Arabic speaking countries into one. As both Syria and Iraq became governed by Baath, the merger was expected, but never happened because each one of the two tyrants never wanted to leave his throne for the other. So instead of the two countries merging they became real enemies; each plotting coups against the other and sending car bombs across the borders etc. Syria allied itself with Iran originally because of this.
@availableusername86 I'm aware of the goal of Arab unity (which isnt necessarily bad), Baath also encouraged modernization as well, yet its a shame that Syria once supported Iran and later the US in the gulf war, but recently, it opposed the US invasion of Iraq.
@slimv29 This is because they thought they were going to be next. The US invasion of Iraq changed dramatically Syrian policy; since that invasion Syria and Iran both became preoccupied with deterring the US from invading them, and to this goal they started sowing chaos and instability in the region with the aim of showing that the Bush approach of democratization was a failure.
@availableusername86 perhaps, but there is iraqi resistance, syrian and iranian involvement within such chaos isnt neccesarily big, also, the US have allowed pro-saudi arabian groups into iraq, and theyve caused lots of chaos and the US also start these acts of violence, and it was an iraqi who told me this
@slimv29 What an Iraqi told you doesn't matter because Iraqis will say different things depending on their religious or political background. Of course, Saudi Wahhabis were second only to the Iraqi Baathists with regard to the destruction they have caused in Iraq, but it is absolutely not true that the Saudi or American government allowed these people into Iraq. This doesn't make sense. These groups came mostly from Syria.

Your telling me that a single family in control of everything is baathism. You have no idea what baathism is then. The Assads entered under the name of baathism, but they are not.
Syrian Baathism is very different from Iraqi Baathism. Syrian Baathism is amazing to live under if you are from a high class/aristocratic family. The lower class is very large in Syria, so life is not good for them. This is because the family in charge of the government is stealing from the people. But, in recent year's Bashar al Assad's rule has improved the economy, shrunk the lower class, and widened relations with Turkey. Sadly, the only lacking in life is information,Youtube is banned there
Youtube in banned in Syria? Why is people posting pro Assad, por Hizbullah, pro Hamas video's from Syria? it was this one girl user name on youtube was syria girl she was posting this onther politicial pary name, the Syrian Socialist Nationalist party on youtube.
Iraqi Baathism was a much more hardcore form of Baathism. Syria is still politically stable, because it shares borders with 2 of America's ally, has less oil, shares a border with Lebanon which would mean a gauranteed defensive ally, and hostility on Israel. Iraq's bordered America's ally, Syria which would be easy to conquer if Iraq falls, and its former nemesis and enemy.... So... Thank god Syria is still stable! Sadly, it is still blacklisted by the USA. I hope that changes.

Arabs and Syriacs should always be good with each other in Syria as the Kurds want to make all of northeastern Syria Kurdistan. Syria can not be divided any further.
Don't forget the Lion of the Desert. The great leader of the Libyan struggle against fascism: Omar Mukhtar. Also Muhammar al Quaddafi is still one of the best Arab revolutionaries.
