  • he's playing this peace so freakin fast that the sound is faster than the video hahaha for me at least

  • @jrtoledano Problems of editing a very old VHS tape. :-)

  • I understand. The thing is, the man has made an intire life of recitals and played in the best orquestras in the world. To pick his level of performance takes, although, an intire life as well. I only chose the MOST FUNNY videos, If you see his workshops and concertos, you`ll know what I mean. Thanks for your comment, Big hug,

  • he ist just funny. But if you compare his playing and sound (!) with other double bassists he seriously doesnt belong to the best. He is an entertainer not really a great musician.

  • BRAVO behjoh - All Gary Karr videos are an historical document.

    BRAVO!!!!!

    VitC

  • That Karr vguy is a very Scratsy bassplayer...

  • Gary has to be the best arco player in the universe. Whoever can play the bass with better intonationwell, try it and put it on youtube, we'll be listening. The distance from note to note on the bass makes it almost impossible to play 100% in tune. We just do the best we can.

  • @eliseoborrero: One side note, "Almost impossible to play 100% in tune on any piece with shorter than whole notes at 4/4.

Unless you're Andre the Giant, or similarly scaled.

  • haha at 0:35

you can tell he was having a lot of fun.

  • wow the guy on the [our] left has his endpin REALLY far out

  • That's because the "Amati" Bass is a little smaller than a regular bass. There is a video from Jason Heath that explains it. I'm assuming you know that the tuning of this basses is one step higher so maybe the resonance is better on a smaller body. I'm not a scientist but I'm thinking maybe it's like a cello or a violin. The higher the tuning the smaller the body. That would explain the brighter sound. Maybe someone can give more info about this.

  • His shifting is really great.

  • That's what you get from doing your throw up exercise.

  • @dextorgarfunkle

Yep. Though, in my circle, we call them "Vomit Exercises". Both names fit..."throw up" because you're throwing your hand up and down, and "vomit" because....well, that's what it sounds like.

Anyway....it's such a valuable tool, and yet not enough bassists warm up with it. I hear Gary does them for 45 minute sessions in KarrKamp.

  • i have a old tape of Leonard Bernstein narrating Peter and the Wolf on one side and St. Saens's Carnival of the Animals. Gary Karr plays "the swan" and is said to be 20 years old in the recording. :)

  • Uploade it !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • He has an amazing sense of style and feel, but my only anal nitpick about his playing is intonation. I still love him as a bassist overall, I mean.....He's Gary Karr. What more can be said.

  • Right !

  • not so, that was wonderful. It was supposed to be light and gay, and he perfectly executed that.

  • your atupid, hes one of the best bassists in the world and the founder of the international society of bassists.. and you are a thing, not a person

  • Hey man I'm entitled to my opinion.

  • you people are close minded jerks, he is entitled to his opinion even if i may not agree with it, which i dont

  • your opinion is stupid.... how about that

  • Lay off him already, he's entitled to his opinion as much as anybody. Though I disagree with him on this point, I do enjoy the music.

  • Bravo

  • Este contrabaixista é simplesmente sensacional. além de ser um mestre no contrabaixo é extremamente simpático

  • Excellent, love the face when he trills. Great tone and clarity, as he is known for
