  • Heard this - original version - for the first time at a soul night on Friday, and it blew me away! Just love it!

  • The best version

  • mannfred mann's version is superior to this one. but the best version is done by bill murray and harold ramis in the movie stripes

  • The pick-up artist!

  • to french people "vous les copains je ne vous oublierez jamais"

  • @08Annasia if you knew Claude François "Tell Him" french cover... oooooh my god what a massacre!!! Exciters on top of top, listen to a tv show in France - 963 at Musicnewzeland channel, search : The Exciters - Tell Him [Rare Clip - French TV]

The same with "he's got the power" tune! crazy!!!

  • I've been telling people for years that a girl group did this song first, but nobody ever believed me. Thanks ! It's great to hear it again.

  • I'm 39 and I like a lot of the newer material. One recent addition to my playlist is Book Of Heavy Metal by Dream Evil. But I like some older music too and this song is one of them.

  • did Manfred Mann write *ANYTHING*? Or did they just get by covering cool old Springsteen stuff and this?

  • The first time i herd this was in music class and i kinda fell in luv with it 0__o Lol...

  • Hey about going on the DooWop show on T.V. 13 and 21 in New York - There is a certain Lady from your past ( in Jamaica Queens trying to reconnect

  • .. Always have preferred this version .. This is R&B perfection .. Mercy!

  • Manfred Mann version totally blows this away.

  • Excellent!

  • Sad this wasn't a big hit this is waaaay better than Manfred Mann

  • I didn't know till recently this was the original. The British groups really appreciated the American girl group sound.

  • This song is so good!!! I'm 14, but hate today's music (most of it anyway, especially rap/hip hop) and 50's/60's music is my absolute favorite. I'm starting an old-fashioned girl group with my sister and a friend to bring REAL music. We are writing our own songs and also covering all the best oldies. We will definitely be doing this one! Thanks for posting the original, it's so much better!!!

  • This original version hit the American Top 100 in December 1963.

  • Wow, I know Manfred Mann was talented, but what's with all these artists who simply flip the gender around and then get ALL the credit for someone else's good work?? Like Toni Basil's "Hey Mickey" was really about a girl first.... the British group Racey's "Hey Kitty".

  • @finster1968 and singing the word was, for were

  • What great stuff! Thanks for posting it. Cheers.

  • Why is the original always best? :)

  • 最高だ!

  • Great !

  • Never knew that this song was orignally about a guy. Great song though.

  • I was just reading about Manfred Mann and found out that the Exciters sang it first. I like the extra attitude they put in the song.

  • GOOD VERSION,

  • I guess I'm the only one here who likes Manfred Mann's version better but there is nothing wrong with this one. I guess because I have the Manfred Mann LP. Nice video and I enjoyed the labels.

  • Manfred Mann, eat your heart out. There is no way Mann's version of the song even approaches this one by the great quartet from Queens, the Exciters.

  • I like the Manfred Mann version, but this one sounds better!

  • Sorry your wrong on that point I like this but the lead singer would be no match for Mike DAbo let alone Paul Jones

  • Great sound

  • If you want to know why the group Manfred Mann made this a commercial hit go and see the Manfreds in concert.Paul Jones the lead singer is awesome and is a fantastic talent, the band although minus Manfred are all first class musicians forget Xfactor go and see them, you wont be disappointed!!!!!

  • @royston52 I agree its about time Manfred Mann was forced to play with them what a sound not many ever matched them

  • thanks so much for uploading this!

  • Do you even wonder why they weren't successful but Manfred Mann was?

  • yeah, especially since they're way better (well, that's an opinion i guess, but we all know there's more to it than just the music =/)

  • @violetcloud Paul Jones is one of the very best lead singers I rate this but dont try to bad mouth Manfred Mann

  • i didn't mean overall, i meant in this song.

  • @violetcloud And they, are still as good as ever trust me

  • that's great.

  • I love it when I stumble across a gem like this. Thanks for posting!

  • Ellie Greenwich co-wrote this song and may have been one of the singers on this original late 1950s version, so there!

  • Many thanks to Ellie Greenwich, who wrote this song, who passed today. You are remembered and loved

  • I remember hearing this once on the radio when it was new - well, I should say, after the Manfred Mann version was already popular - and at the time, I thought it was inferior to the cover version, which I was already familiar with. Well...after the passage of 35 years, I can say that my initial impression was wrong. This one's better.

I also misunderstood Manfred back then and thought he was singing "I'm hurt - she's mad" instead of the correct "I'm hers - she's mine." Well, I was only 10.

  • Thanks for the comment

The lyrics that you heard at 10 may have been wrong but during the lifetime of a relationship your thoughts can drift between the two on a regular basis LOL

  • @hebneh

Great comment..agree wholeheartedly. this version is packed with attitude.

BRILLIANT singer. Thisis miles better, but I'm still fond of the M.Mann version though, has to do with memories.we all get sentimental.

    ......"Weddingbells are gonna chime"...........;]

  • Band? the exciters was a girl group..which means that they only sang

  • There was one male member also.

  • Wasn't this song played in a m ringwald movie?olly

  • "The Pick-up Artist"

  • this is like the Isley Bros version of Twist and Shout, far better than the hit versions that became better known. A shame, but that's the way these things go. As long as they're not forgotten is what matters.

  • I listened to this a while ago and couldn't believe that it was outsold so badly by Manfred Mann's cover. This is clearly the better version.

  • I never understood why this wasn't a bigger hit than it was (locally) and why the "other version" was. Really no comparison. This by far the better one!

  • Think.... skin color.

  • Of course...my comment was rhetorical. If I had said the obvious, I was afraid it wouldn't be posted! So many songs were covered--"Piece of My Heart," "I'm Into Something Good," "Time is On My Side," just to name a few.

  • I have this on "Before They Were Hits" Volume 1, and I think it's the best version hands down. Manfred Mann's is enjoyable for sure, but it still can't hold a candle to The Exciters' original!

  • You can`t beat the original version !!!,.ktf.

  • Where've you bin Dave? haven't heard from you in long while thought you'd retired or somethin' ;)

  • Thank you so much Andy for uploading this gem by The Exciters, as although I like it by Manfred Mann this version has got a great northern soul come Motown feel to it. Haven't heard this version in years 5***** cheers mate!!!

  • Dave have a look at the "There's a Kind Of Hush" original I just posted tonight LOL

  • Thanks Dave never heard this one before!! very good. Thanks Xpinger for posting 5*****s

  • Your very welcome Dessie!

  • Brill.

  • when was this recorded?

    thanks for uploading.

  • Hi, If you look up "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" on Wikipedia at en{dot}wikipedia{dot}org then (rightly or wrongly?) this is what you get:

"Do Wah Diddy Diddy" is a song notably performed by 1960s British R&B, Beat and Pop band Manfred Mann. The song was originally performed in 1963 by the American band The Exciters, originally written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. Manfred Mann's version was recorded on June 11 1964...

  • ... was released on July 10 and spent two weeks in August at number one in the UK singles chart and in October of that year it spent two weeks at the number one spot in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
