  • @jacquot8 It is an A. C. Fairbanks Whyte Laydie No. 2. It was probably made in the early 1900s. I believe they began production in 1901. They sell for up to $5000 anymore. A few months ago I wondered the same thing as you, so I did a bunch of research to find the model. It took forever to find it. Nowhere online does it say "this is the kind of banjo Isaac Brock plays." Oh, and if you wanted a simpler explanation, it is an old openback 5 string banjo.

  • God Damn, that drummer is getting really into it. I don't blame him.

  • This performance doesn't do the song justice

  • Are the high vocals on the album not Isaac?

  • Its to bad he never pushed his vocals like this in the studio. What pity.

  • @ChiefGuideMaster I wish he would've in this song, but he's definitely really pushed his screaming abilities in countless other studio recordings.

  • @Flea817 True true but there seems to be a lot more range in his yelping here, in a sort of Tom Waits way, do you hear it? To be specific listen to the chorus right before the bridge.

  • gotta be one of their best live performances

  • @jacquot8 the good kind

  • love love love this.

  • Why is House playing bass?

  • Banjo is badass as hell. Who knew?

  • god modest mouse just creates this tension live, like you don't know what is going to happen next or are they just gonna walk off stage and say fuck it, which i love.

  • Well, They are really Really Talented, Because Isaac is Straight up wasted, and think some more members are equally as wasted

  • not only is he genuinely angry, he's straight wasted

  • see 1:22

  • I love it when Isaac goes nuts at 1:45

  • Jeremiah Green is such a babe. I just want to bake him things. I think it's the bassist in me, but there is nothing more beautiful to me than watching a drummer in his wee zone, being awesome. Except maybe tiny wee kittens or sunsets.

  • @claireyfairycake That's not Jeremiah.

  • You know shit is going down when Isaac gets the banjo out.

  • @FerdinandSlater hahahaha so true ^^

  • Saw him at SOKOL in Omaha, best show I've seen and I've seen Nirvana, NIN, ate dinner with Alice in Chains, still the best. They also played an outdoor acoustic and half of an electric show in a tornado warning shitstorm in Iowa. Crazy bastard, jumped into the front row to break up a fight and almost got electrocuted.

  • No electric guitar like the studio version?

  • @steven8807 i'm pretty sure not that much guitar is used in this song...yah dumb

  • he looks like he is going insane with rabies hes so fuckin cool i dont think ive ever seen him smile

  • How the fuck... do you rock out with a banjo and make it sound as good as he does!?!?

  • Loving Isaac's tie :)

  • Anyway, great that dr. House is on the cello

  • One of the best bridges I've heard

  • @cheekycaribou benjamin

  • i should watch letterman more...

  • like this if cannabis is makin this 30 times better

  • damn these guys rock it something fierce...

  • @joecox100: Fuck yeah! Washington state is the shit man! I'm so happy to live in the birthplace of modest mouse! But sadly I live in the Tri-Cities, eastern side of the cascades. I wish I lived over there in Seattle, Tacoma, Issaquah especially. Anyways... WASHINGTON FTW!

  • banjos are so hot

  • Ugghh why is isaac brock so amazing? I love how much he gets into his music when he sings!

  • this song isnt long enough it puts you in a traance towards the end and then it stops and then ur like wth happened

  • @Mr240gtman Trust me, if they weren't performing this song on national television they would have kept it rocking for another 5 minutes or so, Modest Mouse knows how to fuckin jam.

  • @Mr240gtman Trust me, if they weren't performing this song on national television they would have kept it rocking for another 5 minutes or so, Modest Mouse knows how to fuckin jam.

  • anyone know what kind of organ that is? im referring to brand and model

  • been listening for the past hour. blew off school. dogg peed outside, yeah hardcore Modest Mouse fan aren't i?

  • i am comforted that only 33 dislike modest mouse rocks. rep washington state baby....TACOMA!!!

  • i love them!!!!!!

  • the banjo is orgasmic!!!!!!

  • Is it just me or is the sound of Isaac Brock howling away like a mad bitch the hottest thing ever?! Either that or I really wanna go out and wrestle a fucking bear.

  • what kind of piano is that its utterly badass

  • people should have to state why they dislike vids of mo mouz.

  • fucking JEREMIAH GREEN motherfuckers!

  • Whenever I see some kind of Modest Mouse video, I look at how many people "disliked" it and think, "Those people should not be allowed to breed"

  • people need to realize that's an upright bass, not a cello. most cellists couldnt even pick up an upright bass.. :p

  • god, they look like rednecks here. not saying it's a bad thing, though :)

  • they sound so much better, without that shit cunt Johnny Marr in there!

  • Ha when Isaac wheres that suit he looks like a chubby version of Jim from The Office

  • God I sure hope you are dead.

  • 33 people- 1:03

  • @RockytheRacoon96 lol clever

  • @RockytheRacoon96 Agreed!

  • @RockytheRacoon96 best highest rated comment ever

  • the road to being sober is a long one.

  • I'm reminded of Tom Waits

    anyone else?

  • @LouReedsBooks yes, definitely

  • @LouReedsBooks duurrr

  • There are 32 people out there who touch themselves to Justin Beiber.

  • jimmy fallon and hugh laurie's baby is playing cello

  • @alanamundsen1234 its an upright bass

  • Modest Mouse is the fucking shit.

  • Very creative...banjo and cello really give this song some serious identity.

  • @LentilWk13 i think that may actually be an upright bass that the dude's playing

  • who cares if people think were hipsterss for liking this music this music is fucking great!!!

  • @superduperman71 WHAT'S SO FUCKING WRONG WITH HIPSTERS

  • @superduperman71 Modest Mouse was around before hipsters even existed.

  • @AgujaAzulMD well duh isaac brock created the universe

  • kick-ass performance!

  • I have such an awkwardly placed crush on Isaac. Eeeek. Don't tell anyone. It's an emotional thing. I agree with everything he says. And, of course, his talent? Love him and the entire band.

  • @lydzillaa What the fuck is wrong with you, why would you act ashamed about having a crush on Isaac? I'm not gay or anything but Isaac's a little stud muffin and I would totally hit that.

  • @irvingcsaltzburg HHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH!!! i like you.

  • @lydzillaa But seriously he's not a bad lookin guy at all. At the time this video was made he was going through a lot of shit and he was a little out of shape but now he's gotten skinny again and he actually looks younger now then he did then. And if you still don't believe me check out those Modest Mouse band pics from the 90's, those 3 were like the Backstreet Boys of indie rock back then, except they were straight.

  • @irvingcsaltzburg Man you boys have got some fucked up priorities when it comes to music

  • hmm i think i have a new favorite band

  • Best Version of this song.. IMO anyway

  • @XxInputxX that's a cello b, not a standup bass

  • @geneisnotlame Nope, standup bass. Take it from someone who plays one

  • What is Eric doing sitting down! He should be on that standup bass!

  • Hard to tell.. They vary a bit from album to album and combine many different genres

  • Hahaha! Ok, I've seen this band but I didn't know it was modest mouse!

  • I bet the Letterman audience was like "wtf?"

  • this reminds me of "5 to 1" by The Doors

  • @eddieh74 same beat sounds like

  • whats the name of that keyboard thing?

  • @greenassskateboard

As I recall they made it themselves. So I guess it's a one of a kind.

  • @JuJuHound damn thats crazy, it has a real unique sound

  • Comment removed

  • @greenassskateboard It's a portable pump organ.

  • Only deaf idiots could think that this isn't the best live band in their genre!

  • @ixnay636 what is thier genre?

  • Perfect!

  • The guy on the bass looks like the guy on Mad TV.

  • Nice hair Isaac :D

  • sounds are good

  • @711slushiesaretasty Nice logic, moron

  • @711slushiesaretasty I think the same exert of philosophy can be forwarded to you, Mr."711slushiesaretasty".

  • @711slushiesaretasty I'm going to take this part of your quote "he's a bad ass mother fucker" and just leave it at that, continue to listen to Modest Mouse kthx.

  • @711slushiesaretasty I don't get how this song is at all related to being bad ass, but he is kind of insecure.

  • @711slushiesaretasty I think you are a dipshit, but that doesn't change anything does it.

  • is that an arsenal cap dan is wearing?

  • MM is on david letterman a lot of times

  • How many times have they've been on Letterman?

  • Kinda ballsy of them to play this song on Letterman!

    Badasses!

  • i vow to no longer underestimate the banjo....

  • This is the most amazing song...compared to all the others.

  • I still love this song no matter how many times I hear it. Great banjo work. I wanna see the lead guitarist with a yukalalle next.

  • This is the WHIP! Nice tie too.

  • He rocks the banjo like Bella Fleck. Love it. I want a banjo player in my band! LOL.

  • @leftoversmusic lol who woulndt want one? ah i am so jealous of that stand up :p

  • @leftoversmusic Okay I love Modest Mouse but you cannot compare his banjo skills to Bela Fleck's.

  • What exactly is that box/keyboard that they always have? the one that makes those shanty sounds. I love this band!

  • +5 points for the banjo

  • They sound like the White Stripes in this song

  • that drummer is doin something wierd with his head

  • how come they only have 1 drummer here. o wait, the other drummer is the kewboardist somethimes. nevermind

  • The 2nd drummer was yet to join the band as of this video I believe.

  • o thx bro

  • FUCKING WOOOOW!

  • Ахуенный музончик

    From Russia with Love

  • what a banjo-playin' badass

  • that was hella good!

i love the drums to this song

  • did oasis copy the rythm in waiting for the rapture?

  • Holy shit....I love Isaac Brock.

  • Pudgenik. It suits him. Sure there're no fossils under THAT meat.

  • BANJO!!!!!!!!! isaac is such a cool cat.

  • this reminds me of 5 to 1 by the doors.

  • this makes me want to get a banjo...and some talent.

  • @bruisesandcandy :)))))))))))))))))))))

  • @bruisesandcandy same here

  • @bruisesandcandy Imagine actually listening to it live lol.

  • damn! isaac looks super young here compared to now a days.

    love this song by them...

  • Im assuming you're new to MM?

  • Type it out bitch! Modest Mouse. Show some respect.

  • haha..

  • uhh..not at all actually. ive been following them since ugly casanova days.

  • so much soul in their performance

    awsome!

  • anyone know what kind of organ that is?

  • A pump organ i think. Im not sure what kind. I don't know much about organs, pianos, etc.

  • its a harmonium

  • Simply a man putting some effort into it

  • Banjo rocks now.

  • I thought Isaac got clean? But I really don't think the singing is bad at all, i actually thik it's really good. I don't hear any times where he gets really off key, but their style and the way Isaac sings kind of allows for it anyways.

  • Issac did got clean, he just drinks a little here and there...we all know what he's been through.

  • Isaac*

  • and get*. Sorry, I just couldn't get over that one.

  • what's he been through? i really like the band but i don't really know anything about the members.

  • A quick summary.

Brock's mother left his father for his father's brother. Brock was home-schooled for part of his school career. When his mother's house flooded she was forced to move in to her new husband's trailer where there was no room for Brock, so he stayed behind. He lived on the second floor of the flooded home until he was evicted by the police. After a period of living in a friend's basement, he moved into a shed he built on the land next to his mother and stepfather's trailer.

  • @LSO92 what haha man thats crazy.

  • the singing is actually one of the best ive ever seen in any live video of theres, which says a lot. its just his style. u can tell he is mad and has something to say in this song i love it

  • It means alot if you like it? Are you the fucking champin of music bitch?

  • @Corackstudios I know what you mean. Whenever he really sings, he has pretty good pitch control.

  • @Corackstudios no one is clean, it is kind sicks me when people use that expression, everyone has addictions, it just depends how you can handle them

  • @Corackstudios I like his singing on his albums, not as much live. It seems like hes choking on his own breath.

  • @Corackstudios that's what i love about him, that grit and stuff.

  • @Corackstudios i agree. he doesn't have the best voice but he is best in his own league..love them!

  • He makes some pretty gruesome facial expressions lol

  • Are you kidding me? This is fantastic. You can just see Isaac getting into the song and the emotion. Yeah, he doesn't sing as good as on the CD, but the majority of people don't. You're being too judgmental.

  • actually man he sings just as good live i think he just gets nervous when its on tv lol. cuz honestly i felt he was better live when i saw him a couple months ago

  • Don't get me wrong, I LOVE his live singing so much better than his recorded. He probably wasn't all that into being on Letterman where he can't go insane.

  • These guys are awesome. I could go on, but won't.

  • what do you mean its live music all of its way better then any other version

  • A banjo is easier to learn than a guitar, mandola or mandolin. But people wont believe that.

  • That's probably true, I've never come across a lefty banjo or mandolin so I wouldn't know :(

  • Dont give up searching, I know there are some!

  • I read the lyrics before I heard the song and thought it was going to be metal song. :P Still good, though.

  • You should listen to Tiny Cities Made of Ashes then.

  • Thats something you easy believe if you read the lyrics, and that is one thing which makes Modest Mouse even better.

  • my god thats just pure brilliance

  • They're amazing live, sounds exactly like the original
