I DO love this song and recently just discovered the Cat Stevens song on vinyl as i was breaking out the records the other day ... and lost a little respect for FL as a result. I STILL love this song but IDENTICAL melodies - as much as they have a different "spin" on it - it's the same note for note melody - i mean come on man! It's a rip off!

The melodies aren't identical. But it is reminiscent enough to recall it. Don't forget though, when the simularity was pointed out to FL, they said they didn't realize at the time of writing but agree that it is similar, and peacefully agreed to offer Cat a share of royalties. As a musician, I think there are few similarities between the 2 songs. This song is so much more upbeat and has a different vocal melody and better bass line. the other doesn't pick up till later in the song. Plus this is a shorter song than Cat Steven's song.

The chord progression used is the same one used in many songs but you can't copyright a chord progression. It's the melody being sung to the chords that's in question. The chords in this song are much more "strummed", but essentially can be mapped to Father and Son: especially circling the songs second verse through the chorus and bridge. The thing is that there is a lot more layers to this song. My counter point is that it was a mathematical improbability: like how I feel Beethoven invented the verse/chorus/bridge structure (ie, Moonlight Sonata)
