  • The test begins....... NOW!

  • What animation program did you use to make this vid?

  • 0:04 big building! they should make it real

  • thats the coolest thing ive seen all morning.

  • Very cute animation...I love the Flaming Lips (I am a huge fan) so I think this fits very well with this AMAZING song!!! :)

  • attack of the flying dildos

  • @eyhexs no ¡¡ that's a hair straightener XD :)

  • @audrey00051 is that what you kids are calling them nowadays

  • This sounds nothing like Father and Son.

  • i think it's cute.

  • if you're hungry, you can eat some more of my nuts

  • sounds just like father and son.

  • old news, jackass.

  • @sitobazito

why are people doing thumbs down?

cat stevens won a lawsuit againt them for father and son..

  • It's me.

  • This video displays how bad audio sounds when uploaded to YouTube lol

  • @ZachThePanda Muppet!

  • I like this song,)

  • man, i miss 3 South

  • love this song, and the video makes me smile :D

  • LOL, she was electrocuted and died

  • xD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Saw them in chicago at the New City Q101.1 show in 2003(?) unbelievable show, highly recommend seeing them live.

  • id need to listen to this whole album, because if this vid is any indication of what the "yoshimi" songs mean, that i was off-base...but that cant be. the "pink robots" are most certainly soulless humans. i mean, those lyrics can practically be interpreted literally. this song was confusing, there is a lot of sound at the end. check out my songs and rants, im solid, show some love

  • you're not solid, you are Jell-O

  • This band makes the weirdest music but I absolutely love it cuz there's almost a vulnerability to it.

  • i love this song too. even more so because i grew up around the person who made the album cover- my moms friend george :D

  • the lips rule, and this song is awesome. yusef islam(sp?) is pretty awesome too. why cant we just let that be the final conclusion? this is one song in a huge catalog of songs from the lips, if anyone says they aren't original because one song in hundreds sounds like another then they are crazy.

  • I forgot all about this song until my friend played it on his radio show...good memories. Miss you Nichi.

  • LOL =P very funny

  • I DO love this song and recently just discovered the Cat Stevens song on vinyl as i was breaking out the records the other day ... and lost a little respect for FL as a result. I STILL love this song but IDENTICAL melodies - as much as they have a different "spin" on it - it's the same note for note melody - i mean come on man! It's a rip off!

  • The melodies aren't identical. But it is reminiscent enough to recall it. Don't forget though, when the simularity was pointed out to FL, they said they didn't realize at the time of writing but agree that it is similar, and peacefully agreed to offer Cat a share of royalties. There wasn't a cross word between them.

  • the first message is the one that begins "yes of course"

and i wanna say that if im not wrong Wayne makes the artcover for the records. and this art is great.

  • Anime is the worse

  • As a musician, I think there are few similarities between the 2 songs. This song is so much more upbeat and has a different vocal melody and better bass line. the other doesn't pick up till later in the song. Plus this is a shorter song than Cat Steven's song.

  • Wikipedia: In an interview with The Guardian, front man Wayne Coyne stated 'I want to go on record for the first time and say that I really apologise for the whole thing. I really love Cat Stevens. I truly respect him as a great singer-songwriter. And now he wants his money. There was a time during the recording when we said, this has a similarity to "Father And Son". Then we purposefully changed those bits. But I do regret not contacting his record company and asking their opinion.

  • The similarities between this and Cat Stevens' is unmistakably purposeful, however I have to say that this is far better...

  • The chord progression used is the same one used in many songs but you can't copyright a chord progression. It's the melody being sung to the chords that's in question. This is the same scenario that involved George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" which was very similar to the Chiffons' "He's So Fine". Look up "My Sweet Lord" on Wikipedia for the full story.

  • cat stevens gets 75% of the money for this song, it is established by law at this point, look it up

  • I think the fact that wayne makes this song similar is just a casuality, so whythatfuck are we discussing this?

What the law says i dont fucking care, thats not a valid argument for me.

I think wayne admits that songs looks similar after compose it, its not big deal.

Besides i hate copyright issues, cause at the end everyone is looking for the money, Stevens is now kind of a buda-indi-something so he shouldnt go for money, if you are so spiritual and you did that, then you are bulshit

  • property rights are essential to provide creative people the incentive to continue creating. If they own their creation, they can earn money from it, which encourages them to devote even more energy to those efforts.

The entire principle behind copyright is to encourage creativity, not restrict it.

  • yes, of course, i think thats important. what im saying is 1) the copyright is the worst part of creation, because money is just corrupted 2)even when obviously people must get money for their creations art and expresion should always be the first reason 3) for example labels defends copyright for "the integrity of artists" but they are defending their hits, cause if they care about artist then why put all money to promove britney. they defend k perry rights no sigur ros rights

  • so capitalism is the virus of this society and copytight are the part of art closer to this virus. could be good that someone wins a judgment of copyright and donate all money saying "i made this to defend my art, not for the money". 80% of artists begins making art to change something and ends with a lot of money and dont want to change nothing. of course flamng lips is not the case and this copytight issue is, i think, just a mistake

i think we should use time to talk about art, not copyright

  • this song sux father and son is waayyyyyy better!

  • this is like note for note with father and son by cat stevens

  • Interesting video. Good song.

  • Comment removed

  • you're all fucking childish for arguing over it. they both suck my huge black loldong. go kill yourselves NOW <3

This message is 1 out of 358. I like underage female cops.

  • wow, you guys REALLY don't see the similarities between this song and "father and son"?? it's essentially the same fucking song, come on, now.

not dissing this song at all, i'm just saying. they sound identical.

  • No they dont, shut up and go away

  • @andpyramids I respect the musical angle you are coming from. The chords in this song are much more "strummed", but essentially can be mapped to Father and Son: especially circling the songs second verse through the chorus and bridge. The thing is that there is a lot more layers to this song. My counter point is that it was a mathematical improbability: like how I feel Beethoven invented the verse/chorus/bridge structure (ie, Moonlight Sonata)

  • @andpyramids of course we see it, its in the wikipedia, you think you are the only? dont be fool

  • @khoraza excuse the fuck out of me, asshole, but if you bothered to read the comments, MANY people have argued the similarities between the two songs. why don't you watch what you're fucking saying? prick.

  • haha, the reason i came to listen to this song was because I was sure it had the same chord progression as that cat stevens song.

  • I don't think it was intentional. Both songs are great. They're still different enough from each other so i can enjoy them both. There are similarities but none that deter me.

  • this is bullshit. There are lots of songs that use the same chord progressions. The melody is similar, but not the same.

Man there are some entire bands that exist only to copy other bands.. they dont get sued. Anybody who says the flaming lips arent original is insane.

  • this is shittt compared to cat stevens!! cat stevens rules!!!

  • You're shit. Don't compare a band to the person that they were influenced by.

  • cat stevens is the best...sorry i love flaming lips but cat is the much better artist.

  • other than this song the artists are pretty different. with the artists being as talented as they are it really depends on which style you like more.

  • they are so different that you cant really compare them

  • not an accident, not inspiration - they knew it sounded like Father and Son and wanted to use the chords and melody. see Rolling Stone article. i'm glad they settled and gave credit where credit is due.

  • This song is better than that Cat Stevens song. Even if it does sound similar who cares

  • i agree. this song has very deep meaning as well as all the songs on this album

  • I'm a cat Stevens fan and I love the Flaming Lips too. So they sought inspiration from a great musician. We all emulate the best.

  • EXACT same strong structure

  • this is exactly the same as father & son!!!!!!! LOL!!!! oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!!!! wow. now they share royalties :p

  • a mistake? haha! does it mean that they never heard father & son by cat stevens by saying it was a mistake? *lol*

  • Good song but I agree it is very similar to Cat Stevens.

  • that was the weirdest video I have ever seen. at least the music was ok

  • why would get this deleted

  • WMG went delete crazy with a lot of the flaming lips videos. that's why there's basically only lives and clips left up on youtube. :/

  • I think this is one of the best flaming lips songs.

  • BEST SONG EVA

  • good song, but it sounds a lot like father and son by cat stevens

  • you are so right

  • Ah, yes!

Hah, noticed this the first time I heard this son.

Just wondered if anyone else thought the same thing.

    Awesome.

  • I've heard other people say the same thing, but man I just don't hear the connection. I can understand and see some similarities in terms of the lyric's subject matter, but as far as the sound goes, the two songs are utterly disparate.

  • Lol...

It is the exact same melody...

Even though the flaming lips are great and this is hard to accept, it's true...

    ...

  • Very similar. So much so that, according to wikipedia, they got sued and settled.

They say it was an accident, though, and I'm inclined to believe them.

  • only a matter of days before this gets deleted, but still great!

  • How so? Copyright infringement? Goddamn, that sucks.

  • yes excellent

  • good son...
