id need to listen to this whole album, because if this vid is any indication of what the "yoshimi" songs mean, that i was off-base...but that cant be. the "pink robots" are most certainly soulless humans. i mean, those lyrics can practically be interpreted literally. this song was confusing, there is a lot of sound at the end. check out my songs and rants, im solid, show some love
the lips rule, and this song is awesome. yusef islam(sp?) is pretty awesome too. why cant we just let that be the final conclusion? this is one song in a huge catalog of songs from the lips, if anyone says they aren't original because one song in hundreds sounds like another then they are crazy.
I DO love this song and recently just discovered the Cat Stevens song on vinyl as i was breaking out the records the other day ... and lost a little respect for FL as a result. I STILL love this song but IDENTICAL melodies - as much as they have a different "spin" on it - it's the same note for note melody - i mean come on man! It's a rip off!
The melodies aren't identical. But it is reminiscent enough to recall it. Don't forget though, when the simularity was pointed out to FL, they said they didn't realize at the time of writing but agree that it is similar, and peacefully agreed to offer Cat a share of royalties. There wasn't a cross word between them.
As a musician, I think there are few similarities between the 2 songs. This song is so much more upbeat and has a different vocal melody and better bass line. the other doesn't pick up till later in the song. Plus this is a shorter song than Cat Steven's song.
Wikipedia: In an interview with The Guardian, front man Wayne Coyne stated 'I want to go on record for the first time and say that I really apologise for the whole thing. I really love Cat Stevens. I truly respect him as a great singer-songwriter. And now he wants his money. There was a time during the recording when we said, this has a similarity to "Father And Son". Then we purposefully changed those bits. But I do regret not contacting his record company and asking their opinion.
The chord progression used is the same one used in many songs but you can't copyright a chord progression. It's the melody being sung to the chords that's in question. This is the same scenario that involved George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" which was very similar to the Chiffons' "He's So Fine". Look up "My Sweet Lord" on Wikipedia for the full story.
I think the fact that wayne makes this song similar is just a casuality, so whythatfuck are we discussing this?
What the law says i dont fucking care, thats not a valid argument for me.
I think wayne admits that songs looks similar after compose it, its not big deal.
Besides i hate copyright issues, cause at the end everyone is looking for the money, Stevens is now kind of a buda-indi-something so he shouldnt go for money, if you are so spiritual and you did that, then you are bulshit
property rights are essential to provide creative people the incentive to continue creating. If they own their creation, they can earn money from it, which encourages them to devote even more energy to those efforts.
The entire principle behind copyright is to encourage creativity, not restrict it.
yes, of course, i think thats important. what im saying is 1) the copyright is the worst part of creation, because money is just corrupted 2)even when obviously people must get money for their creations art and expresion should always be the first reason 3) for example labels defends copyright for "the integrity of artists" but they are defending their hits, cause if they care about artist then why put all money to promove britney. they defend k perry rights no sigur ros rights
so capitalism is the virus of this society and copytight are the part of art closer to this virus. could be good that someone wins a judgment of copyright and donate all money saying "i made this to defend my art, not for the money". 80% of artists begins making art to change something and ends with a lot of money and dont want to change nothing. of course flamng lips is not the case and this copytight issue is, i think, just a mistake
i think we should use time to talk about art, not copyright
@andpyramids I respect the musical angle you are coming from. The chords in this song are much more "strummed", but essentially can be mapped to Father and Son: especially circling the songs second verse through the chorus and bridge. The thing is that there is a lot more layers to this song. My counter point is that it was a mathematical improbability: like how I feel Beethoven invented the verse/chorus/bridge structure (ie, Moonlight Sonata)
@khoraza excuse the fuck out of me, asshole, but if you bothered to read the comments, MANY people have argued the similarities between the two songs. why don't you watch what you're fucking saying? prick.
I don't think it was intentional. Both songs are great. They're still different enough from each other so i can enjoy them both. There are similarities but none that deter me.
not an accident, not inspiration - they knew it sounded like Father and Son and wanted to use the chords and melody. see Rolling Stone article. i'm glad they settled and gave credit where credit is due.
I've heard other people say the same thing, but man I just don't hear the connection. I can understand and see some similarities in terms of the lyric's subject matter, but as far as the sound goes, the two songs are utterly disparate.
The test begins....... NOW!

this is bullshit. There are lots of songs that use the same chord progressions. The melody is similar, but not the same.
Man there are some entire bands that exist only to copy other bands.. they dont get sued. Anybody who says the flaming lips arent original is insane.
