Another thing he said was that he likes to try different versions of the same song and mess around, I think what your (and he) is talking about is simply the creative process... But, as you noted, you can say this about any other artist. These similarities in material are what differentiates him and makes him unique. If you read the lyrics alone of this song you have to admit it's pretty awesome.
