  • This does not do that crash justice; that was a MASSIVE impact.

  • Only if they had SAFER Barriers.

  • I may be wrong because I admit I've only recently really started to watch racing (Nascar, Indy, etc), but I would assume that technology regarding safety was more than likely not the same 15 years ago as it is now. RIP Scott Brayton, Dan Wheldon, and all the other drivers who passed doing what they love.

  • one of my buddys died by tripping and bashing his nose into a rail, ud be amazed how much luck can play into this kind of shit, some of us are just unlucky. this guy included

  • Was this pre Hans Device?

  • @dmarkj22 I'd think it wasn't as yet mandatory, but as he crashed backwards / sideways into the wall it might not have helped that much.

  • does anyone know if he lost a tire or somthing in the car broke? there as a noise right before the car veered in the wall.

  • @MrPorsche91730 I think thats him hitting the brakes

  • @MrPorsche91730 He suffered a rapid tire deflation at the apex of the corner and it pitched the car out of control. There was nothing he could have done to save himself. Mechanical failure killed Brayton

  • I remember that day. We took our little boy to the track for the Indy 500 practice on my birthday. He had a little girl. Sad. I will never forget it.

  • @limabeat I remember being there I was 8 and I remember my dad saying he had thought that he died when he crashed before anyone knew anything.

  • Imagine having a million people watch your death, and try to judge how bad it was? Come on people, it may not be as bad as Smiley or Moore's ends, but he still died. Have some respect!

  • He died from that? I've seen a lot worse

  • @limabeat as far as i know he didn't go from "230mph" to 0mph. So he could have easily survived.

  • @NOXXism Hitting your head against concrete at 230 mph doesnt seem all that bad...people survive that all the time.

  • Did not even look all that bad, seen a lot worse, just very unlucky poor chap, probably broke his neck or something?

  • it would be one thing to die by your own fault, but by a tire?

  • @UgotMiniJacked His right rear tire blew. Something tells me you do not know much about racing....

  • you try hitting a wall going over 200 mph and then see if you live or not. cars are made to drive, not crash.

  • That's it? I thought you could survive a crash like that.

  • at about 0:04 he is most likey thinking THIS BLOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @SilentSniper502 youre a sick fuck

  • Just one thing! Why do people press "LIKE" on these videos!

  • damn i feel bad for him he was on the pole and could have won

  • 0:02

  • i couldnt do a handbrake slide at those speeds either

  • Still can't believe he died. There was an IRL race in New Hamphire later in the season and all the advertisements for the race had Brayton's picture on it because they printed it before the died.

  • How did he die? Did he hit the wall really hard?

  • @AussieRaver1996 skull fractures.

  • @AussieRaver1996 His speed at impact was recorded about 370 km/h...awful hit :s

  • @ursuss100 Ouch......

  • you can hear the tire blow as he is heading into turn 1.

  • Defective tire at 230mph.... not a thing you can do but die.

  • @ThePaulnessable You are sick. As in physically sick.

  • @ThePaulnessable you are a sick fuck. get a life

  • @ThePaulnessable Tell that to his friends and family you fucking dick. R.I.P Scotty

  • To those of you who don't have the common courtesy to keep your mouth shut & smart@ss remarks to yourself...hope you rot in he!!. I remember exactly where I was when this happened and heard it over the radio....I had just driven by Scott's condo on Coldwater Lake. He was a local hometown hero like you would never believe unless you were there. Heading to Indy tomorrow morning for what should be a great race! RIP Scott, you will always be a Coldwater's Hero!!!!!

  • Low quality video.

  • That was a shocking day. I'll always remember Scott Brayton. I drove through Coldwater, Michigan a few days after his death. Someone had put little checkered flags all around the perimeter of his yard... so very sad.

  • you have answered my question right

  • For all you arseholes saying "this is fake" this is real.

  • What I meant is did it almost flip or did it flip and the wall hit the drivers head because if you have seen it almost or maybe it caught air after it hit the wall? please respond this answer to me at pokemon56761 and also how can I put a picture on my channel where there is a shadow of a persons head do I paste one on or upload one? please respond to this also at pokemon56761! thanks

  • @orientgate Boring accidents?! You enjoy watching people injure themselves, do you?!

  • HOW WAS IT FATAL IT LOOKED LIKE HE HIT THE RIGHT OR LEFT SIDE OF THE CAR CAN ANYONE RESPOND TO THIS PLEASE AT POKEMON56761?

  • @pokemon56761 dale earnhardt's crash didnt look fatal but it was. just research it. if you can watch this on youtube you can search google or wikipedia.

  • @pokemon56761 You would be surprised at how much force is put on your body when you hit a solid concrete wall like that. It probably snapped his neck, I dont think they used any type of neck braces back then, definately not a Hans Device.

  • @feefish001 Not only did they use no HANS at the time but the cockpits' edges were much lower which left the head unprotected except by the helmet...And, helmet or not, the head hitting the wall at high speed kills you...

  • @feefish001 ya it was one hell of an impact, the impact tore his aorta artery RIP Scott Brayton

  • @pokemon56761 I will respond...all caps guy.... He hit on the left side. His car was doing around 230 entering the turn. The fatality was because the sidepods were much lower than today, and back then no driver wore the HANS device...and there was no SAFER Barrier back then. It was a freak accident even back then...plenty of drivers had hit the wall..He was just unlucky. I know for a fact when the emergency workers approached him his ears were bleeding, truly sad. I live here and we know...

  • @cmgww That is very true about luck. Right after the Gordon Smiley accident, I remember A.J. Foyt said something like, "I don't care if you're driving a tank - if you hit wrong, it's all over." So many times in these accidents, the difference between dying and surviving can be determined by the angle the car hits the wall. Just a few degrees can make the difference.

  • Driver Error blew the engine, fluid excaped onto the tires, lost traction, death. Good thing he was the only one out there

  • it was invented at the university of nebraska. indianopolis was the first to use ithe safer during a real race

  • Dswan you dont know what your talking. indycar didntt invent it the safer it was invented by MRAF at the university of nebraska they did it for all tracks not just indy

  • ONE M0:00RE TIME!

  • @holden0001 i apologize

  • Gay

  • Doesn't really look fatal. But the speed was reportedly 370 km/h, so that's accounts for everything.

  • @Muzzer27 You're right, it doesn't look fatal. But as you mentioned too, speed was 375 km/h or 225 mph.

Due to the cockpit's lack of security at the time (particularly no side restraints and higher sides), Scott's head struck the wall at impact which caused very severe head and neck injuries.

  • héhè_áñÿ0Ñé_wÅÑÑÅ_chÀt_wIth_mË_Í_fêèl_sô_lØnélY_tøDáý∟

  • MissEgasMoniz: Obvious faux fan. - Back to NASCAR, where the walls moonlight in massage therapy.

  • @Phaedrus27 maybe indy should follow nascars example and get the safe barriers....besides most of the tracks indy runs at nascar runs at so the safer barriers are already in place.

  • Comment removed

  • @endurocatfish Indycar invented the SAFER barrier at Indianapolis. I'm sure this accident was one of the driving reasons for the development.

  • @endurocatfish I'm sorry - the point is lost on you.

  • ouch. what a hit. it's a shame too, because with today's cockpit design, he'd still be alive

  • Don't feed the trolls

  • Can we all stop with the bickering, and just think about Scott Braytonand the sadness this crash left behind?

  • MissEgasMoniz <---- World class idiot. Probably a Justin Beiber fan...

  • @UgotMiniJacked: It's funny how our nations call us allies, but yet they have countries full of fucktards such as yourself. Plus just the fact that you drive a Geo Metro at 45mph on the freeway and talk crap about a guy doing 200mph just baffles the mind. Good luck on your next war by the way...douche!

  • how the fuck did he crash, oil spot, gas pedal stuck? whats the cause of death? what the hell sniperkit, how bout some god damn details..

  • @TheCannabisKing He was travelling 375 kmh/225 mph when the right rear tire blew. He died of basilar skull fracture because his head either hit the wall or the edge of the cockpit.

  • @TheCannabisKing is it your goal to talk like a 12 year old when asking a simple question like .."what happened to cause the crash ?"..posting to youtube doesn't always mean... lack of basic maturity.

or mabey you are 12.. than ..carry on

  • @TheRocketSilo yeah well, it also doesn't mean be a dick to someone you suspect is 12.. but i guess if you had enough sense you'd realize a 12 year old most likely wouldn't pick a name like "thecannabisking."

fuck off and mind your own, i know its difficult when your life is bullshit, but just try, please.

...or maybe your just a dick...that being that case, fuck you.

  • @TheCannabisKing ..go smoke annother joint

  • @TheRocketSilo

aw thats sad, i had to teach you how to properly insult me.. and you still failed.

.. guess ill have to teach you how to spell next.

  • Will all of you just stop bickering, at the end of the day this video is to show how a man met his end doing what he enjoyed, so arguing at each other is just losing the whole point of the video. If sad people want to write pathetic comments just let them, they obviously have there own problems.

  • It doesn't look fatal at all! What happened?

  • @kzbxvz Blew his right rear tire and his head contacted the wall when the car hit it I think. And also the hit took place at 225 mph/375 km/h :o

  • @kzbxvz back in 1996 when this crash happened the side og the cockpit was lower than the drivers head and he hit his head against the concrete wall

  • @gardnerklein Yes bro, but we have seen many crashes of this kind earlier in the 1970's & 80's where the driver walked away without any wounds at all.

  • @gardnerklein Oh yes but I have seen this type of crashes from Indy and NASCAR racing in a 20 year span, and the drivers mostly walk away alive from the wreck.

  • Until you grow a set and drive over idk 90mph let alone 180 stfu, oh by the way me and your hooker mom want you to move out of the basement fagget

  • @ugotminijacked u just watched a guy die and called him a dumbass because all he had to do was turn left? Un fucking believable your going to hell for sure

  • Yet another reason why Indy cars should be OUTLAWED. They are fast moving death traps, as they have been from day one.

  • @snappy452 well snappy I've been viewing a few vids. Having trouble with the older footage. In this sport its not a game. You face death to win. Earlier racing had fewer rules, but the risks so very high. I saw STP turbine cars and ground effects glued us with excitement. But the rules, with pop off valves and all, it became a drivers sport, not so much an engineers test ground. Surprise, its only a heros game with fans like you that drop the ball and go home when they die.

  • Comment removed

  • @snappy452 You're not crazy snappy. If you're young then the history of this sport comes at you in one big dump. What's not good is taking the totalitarian, dictatorial or tyrannical position. LIKE IT OR NOT. Is it any of your business how others wipe their ass? Don't tell others how to run their private lives. It's none of your business and part of the greatness of the USA and the west in general is the defence of these freedoms. By your statement you suggest you're a traitor to these values.

  • @0987878 Christ and I thought I was prone to irrational overreactions....You need to know I was piss drunk when I wrote this and dont ACTUALLY believe that. Holy shit, get over yourself. BTW, the 'greatness of the USA' line is priceless rhetoric. GOLD. You do realize we have one of the most overbearing governments in the world, right?

Also, I have been a race fan my ENTIRE life. I understand/appreciate how risk is part of the reward.

  • @snappy452 sure would thin the dumb herd quite a bit.

  • To day is the anniversary of Scott Brayton's Death. RIP.

  • @snappy452 Hmmm. Yes we should. I'd love to see Bieber or Gottfried eaten alive.

  • @snappy452 "Opposed to death?" Here's a surprise for you: Everyone dies, and so will you.

  • @glashoppah you DID read the disclaimer that I was REALLY drunk when I made that comment, right?

  • @snappy452 Woops! Sorry, man. I missed that.

  • @snappy452 @snappy452 Outlawing indy cars because of an accident?

God you're dumb. Guess F1 should be banned too, there's quite a few fatal accidents in that sport's history. And so should NASCAR. And rallying. And touring cars. And football. For that matter, ban the morning commute too, because that kills thousands every single day.

Fucking idiot. Grow up, learn that shit happens, and that nothing in life that's perfectly safe is worth doing. You could die taking your morning piss.

  • @TestECull Hey dumb fuck, care to read the reply I made 6 months ago? You never said dumb shit while you were drunk, right?

  • @snappy452 No, as a matter of fact I didn't go digging very far back.

Also, I've never said dumb shit while I was drunk because I've never been drunk in the first place. Don't really see a point in making onesself act stupid, then feel like hell the next morning.

  • @TestECull Im going to ignore your sanctimonious opinion on drinking and just say rest in peace, Scott. I apologize for even coming close to attaching myself to this video via some dumb youtube comment I made.

  • @snappy452 They are not death traps anymore, but they still do break lowerback vertabrae and give third degree burns on people's hands

  • sad to say but i was a vhs junky back then and have so much recorded time for the entire indy week at this time.. I have tons of scott brayton footage.. Maybe i shoudl post some of it?

  • @UgotMiniJacked Maybe his tires where messed up. Maybe his steering locked up. Maybe the suspension spazzed out. It taked balls of steel to even drive a car at more than 180mph, i start grabbing the arm rest at 90. However, We have something here in america you should try, its called boxing.

  • every so often I cycle through these fatality videos to remind myself why I don't race anything faster than karts. one second he's driving well, the next second a tire blows out and he's dead. rest in peace

  • Scott Brayton giving that stock block V6 menard all its got i remember the day before ,scott said i love driving fast cars .R.I.P.

  • @nunobits12 you ain't worth pissing for, i only hope that u will die too.

  • wow u can here it coming (screeching, inadvertant blown tire) and an extremely hard hit, very glad tracks around the world have stepped up safety efforts vastly, rip

  • Can I ask a question? Was this practice before or after qualifying? Because this year on Pole Day, they said he was the pole sitter for the 500. They remembered him as Helio was going for 2 straight poles (they had Scott the last one to achieve it, in '95 and '96). Please answer... I'll doublecheck it of course, since the ESPN guys have made their mistakes in the past...

RIP Scott. This was UGLY, his head seemed to hit the wall...

  • @PhilipTheBigOne I can´t assure 100% but I think this fatal crash occured after qualifying, in fact he had got the pole position and many pundits granted him the victory in the 500. I still got the race (VHS) and I remember all drivers rendered tribute and put some stickers in their cars in which you could read "Running for Scott" or similar near their cockpits. There was an interesting web (Joost, i think) in which you could watch the qualifying highlights and Brayton´s interview about the pole

  • If he was a fag, he would of been going 60 miles an hour slower, in fagcar.

  • It just goes to show the worst hits don't always look that bad. RIP Scott Brayton.

  • SAFETY WILL NEVER EVER STOP THE INERTIA....THE DANGEROUS STILL OUT THERE...LESS THAN IT WAS IN THE PAST..BUT STILL OUT THERE

  • The sad irony is that Brayton was supposed to start the '96 Indy 500 from pole. Scott was very unfortunate: drivers are usually protected in these accidents over the last 20 years (though the HANS device didn't come in 'til '01).

  • Never undertood why he was out there practicing. He had already won the pole for the race and he was practicing in a back-up car, if I remember right. Wasn't this about the time where they were going to slow the cars down the following year or something. He just kept going out to break the track record.

  • No fault of his own. You can hear the damn tire go pop.

  • Remember this--one of the tires blew on the car. We still miss you here in Indy, Scotty.

  • @nunobits12 it should have been you in that car, cunt

  • @nunobits12 lol get a grip. Pathetic troll

  • @nunobits12 Come on, dude. Seriously.

  • @nunobits12 you do this on a lot of videos dont you? dont you think thats sad?

  • @nunobits12 find a new bridge troll!

  • @nunobits12 And I will like see you're head exploding you sick motherf***er

  • @nunobits12 - Gees, shouldn't you be brushing your milk teeth and go to bed as your mommy told you? You're not suitable for being an internet-warrior.

  • @nunobits12 what are you like a six year old fag who fuks his mom for an allowance? get off youtube troll

  • @nunobits12 hey you fucking moron get a fuckin life and stop being such a faggot this is very serious crash

  • @nunobits12 go to hell, moron

  • @nunobits12 Go die horribly aswell then you sick fuck. RIP Scott Brayton

  • @nunobits12 go live in ur own sh1t and fk off. why are people so insensitive? why does that matter to you anyway?

  • @nunobits12 hahahahahaha

  • @nunobits12 Ever hear of karma? Your gonna get it, and we'll see if you'll be laughing when it happens.

  • What a tremendous impact...you can just tell that things aren't going to turn out well.

  • grow up! ass holes. this is a tribute to a dead guy! stop being such wankers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • RIP Scott Brayton.

  • there has to be more to that, probably his helmet was very heavy and without an HANS device, he would have stood no chance

  • And to think, open wheel drivers used to make fun of nascar drivers for driving "taxi cabs"......at least their cars didnt disintegrate like they were made out of particle board in every other accident.

  • @snappy452 The car's feature of disintegration was a safety feature, smartass. Once pieces break off the car, it helps to remove and dissipate energy from the crash, thus, the driver has to endure less forces, partly due to reduced mass as well.

  • @creatyve Yea, cause I didnt know that. Theres a difference between parts breaking off to help dissipate energy. and the entire structural integrity of the car failing. SMARTASS

  • @snappy452 i'm not the smartass here, i'm smart. don't try and alter your statement, you were talking about the car in general, not the difference between parts breaking off to dissipate energy and structural integrity. be more constructive with your feedback please.

  • @snappy452 the cars are supposed to disintergrate. It's supposed to absorb the energy of the crash. However, something to angles and such may be bad and injury occurs if you look at Dale Sr, his crash a Daytona looked harmless but killed him.

And if you look at Mike Conway his car was absolutely destroyed and he lived.

  • @Projectekon There comes a point where the car disintegrates past the point of being a "safety feature", and just becomes a life size crash test dummy car. No car should break apart past the point of recognition.

  • @snappy452 it happened all too often in open wheels.

  • Rest in Peace ...

  • remember teh HANS device wasnt widely used back then proll would have saved him now

  • @QuikdrawlMcgraw The HANS device doesn't help in rearward crashes and can't stop compressive forces within the chest and cranium.

  • oval racing......try the nurbugring

  • what a stupid accident, how come one can die like that. Old race cars were absolutely not safe at all.

  • OK, just to let you know... Brayton died when the left sidepod of his car compressed enough to the point that his helmet made contact with the wall.

Since this accident, not only has the wall been raised several inches, also a SAFER barrier has been installed. In addition, the cars have been slowed down to a point where a driver hitting the wall in a spin like Brayton would have only ended up backing his car with a deformable transmission to mitigate the 'G' forces, into said wall.

  • Anyone can die in minor accidents, all it takes is a knock to the temple, you dont need explosions.R.I.P.

  • @wrm1943 A knock to the temple isn't much different that acute impacts anywhere on the melon. Little kids talking about how this MMA star is better than 'that' MMA star talk about how a hit to the temple is fatal etc. Just rubbish.

That being said, there is a collar that securely holds the drivers' head in place and mitagates energy transfer in the event of a crash. Currently, that have been enough to stop fatal head impacts of a 'normal accident' type.

  • @devildog881966 It's a HANS device.

  • @mrbones410 I am aware of that. It was meant to be sarcastic. Sorry, sarcasm doesn't carry through too well in the written word.

  • so how did he die? head acceleration ? not enough padding around his helmet?

  • Schumacher will never race the Indy500 because of this specific type of accident."Its too dangerous"

  • The sound when he hits the wall is so messed up, it was the blow that killed him

  • fuck indy car racing. nascar is the way to race. its more competive. but i do feel bad for that dude dieing. for the assholes that think its funny, go fuck yourself. u try being out there going 180 on a track wit ur head sticking out the top.

  • @poopycaca15 CRAPCAR is for a bunch of hillbilly faggots with no driving skill whatsoever to just drive in circles.....the most boring and least skilled form of racing on the entire planet.

  • @frambesbuckeye ...insightful words, and beautifully spoken regarding the death of Scott Brayton....you obviously know what you're talking about being so demonstrative.

  • ads? whats that? ABP !!! :D

  • FUck these fuckin ads. We see a person die and a pop up ad comes up for Raisin Bran.

  • this isnt the scott brayton crash ,ive got photos (about 10) ,yes the tyre blew while cornering and 230mph it was the spare car but the photos i have of during and after crash are not the same ,either that or all my photos are wrong ,can anyone confirm this is definately him,if so can you pm me and tell me who the pictures i have are of..

    either way rip

  • @woodymcruk This is the Brayton accident. I was working at Indy that day, and he was in a backup car doing tire testing. His primary car had no green on it.

  • @johnnystir ,thanks if your into motorsport i have some picture to identify if intrested message me on youtube ,thanks for clearing that up

  • time from pop till death about 2 sec.

  • you can hear debris on car bottom or the sound of tire popping when car is in corner

  • i wish indycars were never made.

  • @willieponce1 - grow up ass fuck

  • @willieponce1 thats pretty dark wouldn't you say so?

  • @1969captainron they piss me off too.
