1988 sitting at the bar (The Potters Wheel) in Auckland, New Zealand, throwing back a few pints when i heard a voice next to me asking the barman for a pint in a strange accent. turned to take a look and it was Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones). said "holy shit" and he said "can i buy you a beer?". of course i said yes so he ordered 3 beers. i said damn you must be thirsty and he laughed and said no the 3rd one is for my friend. i turned to look who his friend was and it was Joe Satriani...sweet
Bruce Lee wasn't the first martial artist, but everyone knows he was the best. Muhammed Ali wasn't the first boxer, but everyone knows he was the best. Michael Jordan wasn't the first basketball player, but everyone knows he was the best. Joe Satriani isn't the first guitar player, but I know he's the best.
the most underrated guitarist in history. I was 12 when this album came out and was totally blown away by his incredible creativity. Maybe he's not faster than Malmsteen, but who cares. His songs were a hell lot more creative, artistic.
His newer stuff isn't so hot though. It doesn't have much emotion at all and most of it just sounds manufactured. Not nearly as bad as Malmsteen though. Speed without emotion is just noise, I don't care what anyone says. "It's fast" isn't a good excuse to listen to crappy music. Precisely the reason "Dragonforce" is so popular today.
the problem with his emotion is theres to much rock and not enough swing if he added some more of that " jazz-blues feel " the song would soud amazing
It's not too much rock either, really. It's too much theory and technique. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, you just can't use it as a crutch to hop around on.
B.B. King tells his band "Don't play what's on the recording. Play what you feel. What was right then may not be right now." Lately though, Satriani has just played the same lines over and over without any improv. That's what the problem is.

Such a great songwriter and guitarist. Perhaps he's the only one other than Hendrix who wrote such great songs while excelling with the guitar.

Probably the only guitarist who doesn't sound like a five year old in a home movie on their DVDs.
