The actor playing the captain of the Turkish DC-10 is the same guy playing the role of the terrorist on the episode with the attack on the Philippines's 747!
Yeah, I was just a little kid back then but in the early 80s the travel office always asked my parents if they wanted to be seated in the smoking or non-smoking section.
It was all about money. Douglas knew about the failure in the cargo door, yet they did not wanted to change the door. That is why capitalism is a unfair and dangerous system. They put profits before people, that is why we must destroy it.
McDonnell Douglas probably paid a lot more for the damages and charges after the incident than the price of just simply improving the aircraft. You low life idiots. Because of one airplane design that was originally made just to rival Boeing 747's has taken the lifes of over 1000 people. I don't care if some of you's love it because you've flown it before or something, it's just a murderer to me. I'm glad that Boeing brought the company in the end. Sorry for being so harsh. But I speak my mind.
Ladies and gentlemen this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. I believe that statement ranks in the top 5 of biggest understatement ever.
you do realize that the reason why Captains who pilot planes often try to 'understate' a bad situation is merely so that they won't panic the passengers, don't you? It's quite common for these pilots to do that, they just don't want to panic and scare the passengers even more, because that would only make these even more chaotic.
I agree... it's not right to deceive the passengers as to the severity, but I'm sure none of them believed there was a "small" problem, because they all thought they were gonna die. Though I think this pilot was a hero, not an asshole.
I love MDC planes, especailly the DC-10 and MD-11 but the company's refusal to fix this issue as well as it's piss poor safety record, doomed the company. Had they only did the fix, they might have sold more planes and still be in buiness today. I hope all companies take this as a warning, and that regulations are for the benefit of everyone, company and citizen. That being said, I wish boeing, MDC, and all airline makers would merge into a super company named Areobiz with the sign AB 787.
@KangaKucha MDC no longer exist, having been bought outright by Boeing in the late 1990s. The only line to survive the merger was the MD-90, which was rebadged as the 717 - however it didn't sell particularly well and as a result was discontinued a few years later. Boeing still manufactures parts for the surviving airframes, but there have been no new MD-derived designs built for nearly a decade.
@turricaned I know mate, it's a shame, but thats just how things go. I should have said that I wished that all American/Oceanian airline makers into "Aerobiz". Because Europe with Airbus, Russia with the United Aircraft Coporation or UAC, and China with there makes should provide competion for it as well. A pity that all future MDC planes, like a new MD-11 and the like, were sheved, but there ya go. Likley in this day and age, we don't need anymore than two or four engine planes, no more or less
@atami210 It wasn't just profit - MD were involved in a bitter competiton between themselves, Boeing (to some extent, though the 747 was larger), and Lockheed (whose L-1011 TriStar was a direct competitor). A lot of the shortcomings in the DC-10's design were due to a desperate attempt to beat Lockheed to market (ironically, they needn't have bothered, as Lockheed ran into problems with RR, their preferred engine supplier). Basically, the manufacturer that sold the least aircraft would...
@turricaned ...have to give up on the civil airliner market (the fate which eventually befell Lockheed). There was also a lack of imagination in MD's engineers, who opted for "tried and tested" design parameters, whereas Boeing and Lockheed realised that fundamental things would have to be reconsidered (not least the 2x increase in pressurised air inside the fuselage, which was the real reason the floor failed on the DC-10).
@turricaned Lastly (apologies for the multiple posts), what this documentary does not mention was that Bryce McCormick was a senior training pilot at AA, and knew the MD engineers. He was told that the DC-10 neither had nor required mechanical backup if the hydraulics failed. A perfectionist almost to a fault, he booked time in the DC-10 simulator to learn how to fly the aircraft on engine thrust alone. The passengers on the Windsor flight got *extremely* lucky that day.
I'm curious... Do relatives get to listen to the cockpit voice recorder? You know, to hear the last thing their loved one(s) said. Because I saw this youtube video containing texts of examples of the last things the pilots said before crashing and there were things like "I love you Mom" etc...
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your Captain speaking, we have a small problem, we have a gaping hole in the cabin, we have lost an engine, our hydraulics have failed, we have a severe injury on board, our rudder is broken, we are having trouble controlling the aircraft, and we will probably overrun the runway and plow into an explosives factory.
the woman who got hit in the face with a piece of airplane was trying to find a stuertess to stop the bleeding? that stupid cunt should have bled to death
btw that crapy airplane caused the concorde to go down in 2000 killing all passengers on board plus an extra 4 on the ground... that plane should never have flown that long considering all the deaths and accident which occured because of it...
I m really amazed by the pilot's proficiency... that guy just did what seems to be impossible! boeing are among best airplanes ever but MD sucks...big time!
My favourite aircrafts are Airbus, quickly followed by Boeing. The McDonell Douglas planes as well as the lockheeds are aircrafts that I truly dislike and mistrust.
the reason m douglashad these problems is because the dc 10 was their version of the 747, the rushed to put it out to compete with boeing and failed to make sure it was safe, the plane had major cargo door and hydrolic issues m douglas just screwed up by being over competitive and the amount of crashes that it lead to i believe resulted in thousands of deaths
No, I think it was the competition with the Lockheed TriStar (which was in the same size class as the DC-10) which drove McDonnell Douglas to cut corners with the DC-10. The DC-10 sold better than the TriStar because it came out earlier (the TriStar was also delayed by horrible technical problems with the development of its Rolls-Royce engines -- in fact Rolls-Royce had to be bailed out by the UK Government), but neither of the wide-body trijets made a profit in the end.
Now this is BS, M Douglas thinks they are too big to fail, so they don't care about the lives of the people that keep them in business. I doubt they are no longer around, they just pushed paper to help their PR and resume business under a smoke screen. I have never lost anyone to a plane crash but I still think these assholes need to be in jail for manslaughter or better yet murder since they knew what the facts were. Where is the government on shit like this, they only collect tax or what?
@ariklevi1717 yeah, I also noticed that. The man who wanted to bomb off the Philippine Airlines' 747 was trying to save the sinking THY's DC-10 decades agoXD
You think having a coffin drop in your front yard.. imagine being told that your relative died.....again, and decided to leave their flight on the way to their funeral early.
The question is was did you remember to insure the casket?
Fines aren't enough to change the "money before safety" culture of large corporations allowed to make cosy "gentleman's agreements" with weak regulators. Until the executives responsible for such decisions know they will face long prison sentences for their reckless negligence and greed, these accidents will continue. This is shown by the fact that cargo doors on Boeing 747s also blew out due to a very similar design flaw, being outward opening with locking pins which weren't fail safe.
I flew with American Airlines with that very captain who saved everyone aboard flight 96. When I found out it was him, I suddenly new I was in good hands. BOO TO DEATH CONTRAPTION 10!
@themrviolaman sorry, but the DC-10 was and is an awesome aeroplane, has been a workhorse for many airlines globally, and with American. It was loved by pilots, flight crew, ground crew and passengers.
