I really loved the Sydney Opening and Closing ceremonies, maybe because I was 10 and its the first games I can really remember well, although I think that the closing ceremony was filled with mostly in-jokes for the Australians ;)
Oh man!..I remember this....I was still in high school then, I was watching far away in the south seas, live on telly, but not after I ran away from home and to my friends place, who happened to have a tv set....this was my first Olympic opening ceremony!..we enjoyed the live broadcast!, sharing one can warm coke.....behind us were a group of drag queens, who also happened to be there....surely the olympics brings people together
I love each one realkly. there is something magnificent about the opening and closing ceremonies of olympic games. i think its the MASS amount of people in one place all working together to produce one thing... :P or something like that
Barcelona was spanish-centric to the hilt; Atlanta was an international joke; Sydney was well planned and ready and was very good; Athens was a controvertial but it pulled it off at the last minute, was amazing. Sydney gave the most and lost the least. Sydney wins in KO deathmatch
So much debate by wonderful people on what is the best Olympics so far but I just want to say the best time the city can have is when we are visited by the wonderful people of the world. In Sydney we had the best fun and loved having so many wonderful people to have fun with. Love the Olympics.
All the ceremonies where nice, also China's. For the greeks it was not only a party or a show,it was much more...Our history ...everybody knows that the olympic fire starts from Olympia...
Why are u arguing guys? take it easy. I think too that Athens ceremony was the best artistic and most human oriented + best music but of course all ceremonies had something good to show.
I musiki ipokrusi stin teleti tis Athinas itan poly pio oraia apo ayti ti barbari poy exei to videaki. Parola ayta oso kai na tin kakopiisoyn itan i kaliteri teleti enarxis poy egine pote. Kai se osoys den to xoneyoyn einai epeidi deixnei ti diafora toy ellikou politismou kai toy barbaroy theamatos.
lol drums r def. part of China's culture.... look at Lion Dances (which has been part of China's tradition since.... AGES)!! You cannot say that China copied Athens idea with the drums, and as for the fireworks, the Birdsnest has a totally different style to Athens, so how can the fireworks be in the same place?
All the OCs have had their own unique styles in trying to portray their own culture, and there will be similar aspects but of different styles which are all amazing!
china copied the fireworks style of athens it was almost the sameeeeeeee same style same places... what can I say... China failed in that aspect, cause they were the ones who invented the fireworks how they dont create a new form of presenting them or maybe just more cerative parts to throw them up cause were the same places as athens
Wow....there all great...but nah BEIJING IS THE BEST TO DATE>.....i wanted to see a brief of all olympics...and im going with beijing .....there the best games EVER>>>.plus athens all there venues are destryed
I think Athens really delivered with their ceremony, considering the amount of amazing history they had, its a sahme they didnt get '96 (the a centenary of the modern games). I loved sydney's aswell, maybe even more. The US better not get it, they have had crap olympics time and time again... Madrid, Rio, Paris all far better choices. Anyone agree?
Id put my money on paris hey, theyve bid for the past 5 or something... and im sure they would have a brilliant ceremony, but madrid i think is the dark horse... i can see it being party time in spain in 2016. Hopefully i get the chance to go to them, 2012 too
You're right..even though both France and Spain have had it in the past and I'd like to see a different country getting it this time. Well, I am sure whoever gets it will have a great opening ceremony. Can u imagine the technology in 2016????
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
everything depends of the past and history of the country china has got a lot of history and spain too, USA and australia are quite new countries and greece is the mother of olympics.. for me the best are the chineese and barcelona, but we've got the best song sang by mercury and caballe!.....
The song for Atlanta 1996 is "Reach" from Gloria Stefan. The Spanish version is called "Puedes llegar" and it is performed by Gloria stefan featuring Jhon Secada, Placido Domingo, Ricky Martin, Julio Iglesias and many others latin artist.
I really hope that Madrid will get the games of 2016, because is a bautiful city with great people too.
But the ignorant americans are going to pay for the olympics to go to Chicago, that would suck because the stupid americans think that the olympics are just like a superbowl halftime. If you want a prove, watch the crapy ceremonies of LA and atlanta.
Shame on the US! Sidney's cauldron was the best ever, but Athens opening wast the best ever, thy remind to the world all their history, their apportations, their discovries, what a rich culture...Beijing was simply amazing, but you kow that to expect from them every minute until the lighthing of the cauldron that was spectacular, and the stadium's surrounding firegames show was never seen on earth! Athens leave me a special memory, what a hadr work to do for London!how'they gonna get over this?
I still feel that Greece's was by far the best. China copied most of the elements presented in Athens 2004, such as the drummers and the ppl flying on top.
Sydney's was the best Cauldron lighting...but again, I think the feeling u get from the Greek ceremony cannot be compared to anything else. Graceful, beautiful and definitely elegant!
2:18 for some of the flying people and 2:55 for the drummers (You see all of them in the next shot). Just in case you missed them or thought you were watching Athens ;-)
For the Greeks the drums...are national instruments...in all their parades etc...I didn't know the Aussies or the Chinese had the same tradition, u know what I mean....;-)
BTW I will always watch Athens 2004, cause it was simply the best ever! ;-)

For China, drums have been part of their history since the beginning. The earliest documentation of the Drums in China is from the Shang Dynasty.
Australia is a very young culture of only 220 years. These are impossible comparisons - but our drummers were more regimental - which is consistent with Australian drum culture. Aboriginals have a historical connection with Drums as well.
However - it still does not change that these elements were used in Sydney prior to Athens.
Then according to your research... everyone copied everyone after 1896 when ATHENS started the games, so why don't you check all ceremonies prior to Sydney to find similar elements?
I can see how you are defensive of your country China. It is just too obvious when there are similarities between ceremonies only 4 years apart and especially from a country that impressed the whole world and the athletes felt they were stepping on holy grounds...because of the history...such as Athens ;-)
Well, I guess my research is a little more thorough than yours - see all you needed to do was click on my name and look, there is the little Australian Flag in my profile.
Now, as for the all copying Athens? The 1896 opening ceremony consisted of a speech, it being declared open, and a band and choir doing the Olympic hymn. Thats is. No show of nations, no show at all, not even an olympic flame.
So before telling me to check my research, do a little of your own.
U just won't stop right? I don't need to do research to see if u r Australian or Chinese, cause I don't care. I don't have time for this...which I guess u do ;-)
I made the original comment about what I believe and I will stick by it, whether u agree w it or not. Why don't u go and check it again to see what u are talking about and stop replying with all this. I don't think anyone needs u to tell them things they already know!!!
LOL! you don't have the time yet you keep replying. Unfortunately for you you seem to have run out of answers seeing how you clearly didn't even bother to look up the 1896 opening ceremony before placing your foot in your mouth.
Feel free to stand by the assertion that China copies Athens.
I shall stand by mine that Athens copied Sydney - which is yet to be bested.
I keep replying cause obviously I've pissed u off and it's fun for me!!! I don't need to run and look up every ceremony and then reply...so to make a point!!!
As for the 1896 ceremony, I have seen it many times and I am very proud to be GREEK and having given the lights of civilization to ppl like u...so u can show afterwards the jellyfish and say it was the best ceremony ever...go and check it now and reply..don't forget ;-)
Perhaps you need to go back and see where this discussion started. You know - where you implied that China copied the drummers and flying people off of Athens. I was just advising you that the Opening ceremony before Athens had these elements too. You are the one who took offence to being corrected.
Clearly you should be looking up the other ceremonies before commenting because you look like an ill informed groupie otherwise. ;-)
Whether you like it or not, Athens 2004 inspired and set the bar high having truly become the epitome of the Olympic Games from which even the Chinese BORROWED many artistic elements i.e. in BOTH(!!) of THEIR ceremonies. Greece can indeed be delighted because ... imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. For the record, bigger does ... not mean better!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Oooh, So Sydney can be delighted too - seeing how Athens copied the Sydney 2000 artistic elements. =) Awesome. Thanks Cobalt.
Deny it all you like, but they did. Greece couldn't even get their stadiums finished in time. The swimming arena was meant to be "inside". Yeah, the rest of the world is *so* jealous of Athens lack of organisation, borrowed Opening Ceremony elements, and big cigar looking cauldron. Terribly, terribly jealous. Get over yourselves already.
Whether you like it or not Athens opening ceremony was by far the best! Sydney did not differ from the typical Atlantas's opening, except for the lighting, that was truly amazing! Beijing, was spectacular, Barcelona artistic. But Athens was authentic, "unforgetable, dream", poetic, the way it should be...Athens has been the one and only opening ceremony that "hymned" the human race, the diversity of humanity. Greeks wanted a modest, "doric" celebration, exactly as an athlete's way of life...
Panadem: "Whether you like it or not Athens opening ceremony was by far the best!"
In YOUR opinion. The problem on here is not jealousy. Its the typical egotistical tweenagers who can't handle the fact that other people think differently to them.
Athens bored the shit out of me. So "whether you like it or not" I found Athens to be the longest, most painful 4 hours of my life - and that takes some monumental effort considering I have been in labour 5 times. Time to learn to deal with life, hun.
Aylyese, i still believe that Athens 2004 have been the best olympic games so far. Based on a human scale, Athens 2004 Games illuminated the humanitarian principles, celebrating the human being itself. Athens 2004 focused on the human brain and its achievements. It was not just a show of greek history; it was a hymn to the man. Athens opening ceremony renewed the aesthetics of the opening ceremonies; Of course this is a subjective thesis. Beijing as well as Sydney were spectacular, too.
Woot! Someone with perspective at last. Thank you. All it takes is someone to accept that this is entirely subjective. Of course, this whole discussion started because someone insisted Beijing 08 borrowed from Athens 04 the exact same elements that were also in Sydney 00 - all of which had reason in their own cultures to have those elements. I was really just trying to point out to this person how silly their claim was. Having a preference is fine. Letting it blind you to fact is immature.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Dude your from Greece, so if course you think its the best, its nationalistic pride that is stopping you from seeing how bad those games really were. Isnt Athens like all fucked up right now, with all those riots and stuff? Yes I realise that has nothing to do with the olympics, Sydney never riots though!
Euhm,if it has nothing to do with the Games why do you bring it up ? LOL... dude ! lol. No riots in Sydney, right, very well for a country full of ex criminals from the UK :)
Where'd you get that info from, your shitty Belgian history class? Full of convicts, that was like 200 years ago, so there goes your retarted argument. When Belgium hosts the Olympics or puts in a bid, we'll talk then okay buddy:)
oh, honestly, from a neutral person, I liked much more the Athens games, the opening ceremony was miles better than the Sydney one. Atmosphere was a lot better and lightning of the flame was pure simple and pure magic while the Sydney one was only show and that even didn't went all that well, it took ages before that flying 'object' whent up that elevator (?) thing. Athens had the best games ever so far, imo
I cannot be objective, but i strongly believe that this is undoubtful; Athens 2004 focused on the human being and was based on a human scale. just watch the without precedent opening ceremony!
Oh, honestly - I don't have to agree with your opinion to be entitled to my own. Soon as you people learn to live with the fact we are entitled to different ones, the sooner you will work out why people aren't very nice to you. =) I found Athens snooze-worthy. It doesnt matter how neutral you try to be, it wont change my opinion. But thanks for your concern.
who says you have to agree with me ? And I do feel no need to agree with you :) In fact I reacted to your post, I didn't agree with it, so I reacted, because I have a totaly different opinion than you. But it seems it is you that can't except that :) But you go on telling others they have that problem, bit weird, no ? :)
And hey you don't have to change your opinion:)Weren't it also the Greeks that "invented" freedom of speech and democracy and all that ? Wonderful nation it has always been!
And oh, now I get it, you have these silly cliché ideas about nations and its people, don't you ? So actualy your opinion about the ceremonies ain't based on the quality but pure on where they are organised ?! Oh my ... that's sad.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Nope. I thought it was boring. No reason other than in my opinion - it was boring. That kind of ridiculous comment you made is like a man blaming a womans bad mood with him on PMS. Can't possibly be his fault.
Ironically - in case you missed - I have never said any opening ceremony was better than any other. Only that Athens was putting me to sleep. I thought Atlanta was just plainly stupid too. Funny you aren't also defending that one. Oh wait - I must hate america too.
Sydney Olympics were very good, not the best Games, for God's sake! Despite the groundless propaganda Greeks managed to create the BEST OLYMPICS EVER; artistic, in human scale, dream! Just watch the opening ceremony on youtube. Atlanta good Games? You guys coprehend things differently. Beijing were really excellent Olympics.
Of course this is a subjective opinion of yours. Grounless and with no serious arguements at all, though. Athens were truly authentic Olympics in a human scale, with the less possible commecialism.
¡No Dios Chicago NO!
After watching the Beijing OC last night, I thought I would have a look at some of the past ones. I think the Sydney 2000 Olympics OC changed the style quite drastically and Beijing used many of the innovative ideas from Sydney. I thought both were great - Sydney was just original.
Papaioannou must feel honoured since Zhang Zimou copied most of his ideas, but still Beijing presented a commodified version of Athens opening ceremony!
All those ceremonies were a copy (or inspired by) from Barcelona '92 opening ceremony... more tecnology and resources, so they're "better" than BCN, but not original. BCN was the FIRST ONE.
I remember the archer throwing a flaming arrow...it was so thrilling and breathtaking... awesome. They haven't repeat something like that yet.
The Athens Olympic Games opening ceremony was for me the best of all the modern era Olympic Games. Artistically it was beautiful, the greek historical background is so strong in the world, even today. One thing I didn't find that much attractive was the Olympic flame, the best one for that was in the Sydney 2000 Olympic games.
There's just a few hours for the Beijing Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games and I expect to see something that could be beautiful as the one in Athens but different.
Madrid will be in 2020!!!

lol drums r def. part of China's culture.... look at Lion Dances (which has been part of China's tradition since.... AGES)!! You cannot say that China copied Athens idea with the drums, and as for the fireworks, the Birdsnest has a totally different style to Athens, so how can the fireworks be in the same place?
All the OCs have had their own unique styles in trying to portray their own culture, and there will be similar aspects but of different styles which are all amazing!
hAppiiBB 3 years ago
china copied the fireworks style of athens it was almost the sameeeeeeee same style same places... what can I say... China failed in that aspect, cause they were the ones who invented the fireworks how they dont create a new form of presenting them or maybe just more cerative parts to throw them up cause were the same places as athens

Shame on the US! Sidney's cauldron was the best ever, but Athens opening wast the best ever, thy remind to the world all their history, their apportations, their discovries, what a rich culture...Beijing was simply amazing, but you kow that to expect from them every minute until the lighthing of the cauldron that was spectacular, and the stadium's surrounding firegames show was never seen on earth! Athens leave me a special memory, what a hadr work to do for London!how'they gonna get over this?
boytoyvyrgyn 3 years ago 5
I still feel that Greece's was by far the best. China copied most of the elements presented in Athens 2004, such as the drummers and the ppl flying on top.
Sydney's was the best Cauldron lighting...but again, I think the feeling u get from the Greek ceremony cannot be compared to anything else. Graceful, beautiful and definitely elegant!

Sydney had drummers and flying people. So does that mean that Athens copied them first?
aylyese 3 years ago
2:18 for some of the flying people and 2:55 for the drummers (You see all of them in the next shot). Just in case you missed them or thought you were watching Athens ;-)
aylyese 3 years ago

However - it still does not change that these elements were used in Sydney prior to Athens.
aylyese 3 years ago
Then according to your research... everyone copied everyone after 1896 when ATHENS started the games, so why don't you check all ceremonies prior to Sydney to find similar elements?
I can see how you are defensive of your country China. It is just too obvious when there are similarities between ceremonies only 4 years apart and especially from a country that impressed the whole world and the athletes felt they were stepping on holy grounds...because of the history...such as Athens ;-)
skatulli 3 years ago
Well, I guess my research is a little more thorough than yours - see all you needed to do was click on my name and look, there is the little Australian Flag in my profile.
Now, as for the all copying Athens? The 1896 opening ceremony consisted of a speech, it being declared open, and a band and choir doing the Olympic hymn. Thats is. No show of nations, no show at all, not even an olympic flame.
So before telling me to check my research, do a little of your own.
aylyese 3 years ago
U just won't stop right? I don't need to do research to see if u r Australian or Chinese, cause I don't care. I don't have time for this...which I guess u do ;-)
I made the original comment about what I believe and I will stick by it, whether u agree w it or not. Why don't u go and check it again to see what u are talking about and stop replying with all this. I don't think anyone needs u to tell them things they already know!!!
skatulli 3 years ago
LOL! you don't have the time yet you keep replying.
Have a nice day.
aylyese 3 years ago
I keep replying cause obviously I've pissed u off and it's fun for me!!! I don't need to run and look up every ceremony and then reply...so to make a point!!!
As for the 1896 ceremony, I have seen it many times and I am very proud to be GREEK and having given the lights of civilization to ppl like u...so u can show afterwards the jellyfish and say it was the best ceremony ever...go and check it now and reply..don't forget ;-)
skatulli 3 years ago
LMAO! You are delusional.
Perhaps you need to go back and see where this discussion started. You know - where you implied that China copied the drummers and flying people off of Athens. I was just advising you that the Opening ceremony before Athens had these elements too. You are the one who took offence to being corrected.
Clearly you should be looking up the other ceremonies before commenting because you look like an ill informed groupie otherwise. ;-)
aylyese 3 years ago
Whether you like it or not, Athens 2004 inspired and set the bar high having truly become the epitome of the Olympic Games from which even the Chinese BORROWED many artistic elements i.e. in BOTH(!!) of THEIR ceremonies. Greece can indeed be delighted because ... imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. For the record, bigger does ... not mean better!
MsCobaltBlue 3 years ago

Oooh, So Sydney can be delighted too - seeing how Athens copied the Sydney 2000 artistic elements. =) Awesome. Thanks Cobalt.
Deny it all you like, but they did. Greece couldn't even get their stadiums finished in time. The swimming arena was meant to be "inside". Yeah, the rest of the world is *so* jealous of Athens lack of organisation, borrowed Opening Ceremony elements, and big cigar looking cauldron. Terribly, terribly jealous. Get over yourselves already.
aylyese 3 years ago
Whether you like it or not Athens opening ceremony was by far the best! Sydney did not differ from the typical Atlantas's opening, except for the lighting, that was truly amazing! Beijing, was spectacular, Barcelona artistic. But Athens was authentic, "unforgetable, dream", poetic, the way it should be...Athens has been the one and only opening ceremony that "hymned" the human race, the diversity of humanity. Greeks wanted a modest, "doric" celebration, exactly as an athlete's way of life...
panadem 3 years ago 8
Panadem: "Whether you like it or not Athens opening ceremony was by far the best!"
In YOUR opinion. The problem on here is not jealousy. Its the typical egotistical tweenagers who can't handle the fact that other people think differently to them.
Athens bored the shit out of me. So "whether you like it or not" I found Athens to be the longest, most painful 4 hours of my life - and that takes some monumental effort considering I have been in labour 5 times. Time to learn to deal with life, hun.
aylyese 3 years ago
Aylyese, i still believe that Athens 2004 have been the best olympic games so far. Based on a human scale, Athens 2004 Games illuminated the humanitarian principles, celebrating the human being itself. Athens 2004 focused on the human brain and its achievements. It was not just a show of greek history; it was a hymn to the man. Athens opening ceremony renewed the aesthetics of the opening ceremonies; Of course this is a subjective thesis. Beijing as well as Sydney were spectacular, too.
panadem 3 years ago

Dude your from Greece, so if course you think its the best, its nationalistic pride that is stopping you from seeing how bad those games really were. Isnt Athens like all fucked up right now, with all those riots and stuff? Yes I realise that has nothing to do with the olympics, Sydney never riots though!

oh, honestly, from a neutral person, I liked much more the Athens games, the opening ceremony was miles better than the Sydney one. Atmosphere was a lot better and lightning of the flame was pure simple and pure magic while the Sydney one was only show and that even didn't went all that well, it took ages before that flying 'object' whent up that elevator (?) thing. Athens had the best games ever so far, imo
tideledi 3 years ago 8
I cannot be objective, but i strongly believe that this is undoubtful; Athens 2004 focused on the human being and was based on a human scale. just watch the without precedent opening ceremony!

Oh, honestly - I don't have to agree with your opinion to be entitled to my own. Soon as you people learn to live with the fact we are entitled to different ones, the sooner you will work out why people aren't very nice to you. =) I found Athens snooze-worthy. It doesnt matter how neutral you try to be, it wont change my opinion. But thanks for your concern.
