Sally Elizabeth Arnold and I use to dance to this recording until the soles just disappeared from the bottom of our shoes from sliding & gliding. Junior Walker's music was so much fun.
The drummer on this recording is Billy "Stix' Nicks, Bill was a life long friend of Jr. and THE founder of the Rhythm Rockers (who became the All-Stars) He never got listed in the credits on the recording and still playing and teaching at 77!
this song was recorded and put on the shelf. As Billy puts it "we was out on tour when this song came out but we had to go back and relearn it" we rehearse now on the very kit used on this recording, in fact it still has the same heads on it!
Junior Walker was clearly inspired by those Johnny Rivers Whisky A Go Go records here...this is a wonderful record...you can't help but feel good hearing it.
One of Jr. Walkers all time best! As good or even better than Marvin Gaye's original version! Kick ass tune especially for the time frame---Motown great stuff
I've been researching lists of popular wedding party songs for a party of my own that I'm planning, and I've seen this song appear on almost all of them. However, the version I've seen on every one of the lists where this song is mentioned, without a single exception, is the far inferior James Taylor recording. Shame, as this version is miles better!
This is the rhythm, with its strong back-beat we learned to do the The Hop off of back in the day. If you listen real close to other " MOTOWN" dance tracks,--- not all, but quite a few,--- were produced by using this rhythmic beat, musically called a--- "Shuffle". It was on point because---"The Texas Hop"--- was one of the more popular dance styles in Black Culture. In L.A. we simply called it --- "The Hop or Seven Step" Jr. Walker/ All Stars made it happen on this cut
Definitely my favourite version of this song :D
