@1996Tori It is in Northern California, about 30-40 minutes away from San Francisco and Oakland. It is a beautiful and diverse campus. Admissions largely depend on prospective majors and whether or not you are an incoming high school graduate or a transfer student. As an economics major, I will be transferring to UC Berkeley with a 4.0, though a student with the recommended 3.8 GPA for impacted majors should be admitted. Executive student council members seem to have a decent priority, as well.

All of these years, my aspirations were to attend an ivy. When I realize that a lot of the students applying were beyond my level by un-human amounts, I started thinking about the UC system. I didn't realize how good this school was until recently. When I think about getting accepted by U.C. Berkelely, I feel really ambitious inside - and gain motivation to start working hard again. Maybe my dream will come true - and I might see some of you in 2012.

Berkeley is a great school and by most rankings the top public school in the country but I have to disagree with you on it being as difficult to get in to as Ivy League schools. Based on admission rates Berkeley is easier to get into than those private schools.

Yeah okay, how do you apply to all these good schools and get in and then decide to go a Cal State? You're either lying (which you probably are), poor (which is stupid cause their is always financial aide, and schools always look at an income before accepting students, so if you got into those schools your either rich or well off), or just have a lazy work ethic and don't wanna compete at a good school like those. Well....I think that quarters don't give you time to slack off...so you end up with better grades...and better at managing your time. I think this was the least of my worries. They have the same tuition, but since I live in LA, commuting would spare me housing costs. I'm paying my tuition solely on scholarships, so it was a big decision. I couldn't just go and expect to see what happens; money was a big factor which makes me hate the fact that I'm poor.

I got into UC's at Berkeley, Los Angeles, Irvine, and Santa Barbara as a transfer. I'm still deciding where to go...I have been convinced to go to Berkeley because it's a top school, but my financial situation limits that decision. Is UCLA worth it? It's not everyday that you get into a top school like Berkeley in the Engineering department (Bioengineering). Any advise? Would paying for my expenses all out of my pocket worth the Berkeley diploma? (At least 40,000 in debt for two years?)

ALL UC's are top notch, but Cal is the best public institution in the world and recognized throughout the world (over the others). Also the most diverse.

Couple of months ago I visited a startup in Westwood (UCLA) and talked to founders: couple of UCLA profs and PhD candidates. I (jokingly) apologized for having gone to Cal (30 yrs ago); they (jokingly but begrudgingly) acknowledged that I was smarter. :D We had a laugh because we're brothers in a sense. Go to a UC; Cal if you can!

Thank you napaold. I made the biggest decision of my life just on Sunday whether to ultimately send in my SIR to Cal or UCLA, and I chose UCLA. I pondered on it for a whole month, and despite that my heart was set on Cal, finacially UCLA was more realistic, since my whole life is in LA, most importantly my job, which pays my bills. It would had been great to have attended Cal, but I will try not to look back on my decision and be happy with UCLA.
