  • leather strides at 59 and still looking good. lou reed is one of the coolest americans of all time.

  • Lou Reed is weak, as weak as a reed.

  • lou is a differrent great

  • The best cover!

  • lennon would appreciate this cover..

  • Just saw Lou cover 'Mother', wasn't bad.

  • This is freaking excellent! Lou always puts his heart into every song he sings. This was infused with a power that is sorely lacking in the original and the Roxy Music cover. LOVE YOU LOU!

  • Best ever

  • awesome.

  • There was a time when I didn't get Lou Reed. He's not an easy ask for everyone -- especially people with conventional tastes, or those coming in from great singing groups like The Beatles (as I was).

Those who don't like him, STFU and go listen to "The Velvet Underground & Nico" and all of your head scratching will cease (assuming you have taste in music). If you're coming from more pop sounds, maybe start out with "Sunday Morning." Either way, just go do it and come back when you do.

  • ruined a great song

  • @94joecity really, then why did the entire audience jump to the feet at the end.. I was at this taping and it was amazing.. He brings his own soul to this song...

  • I understand peaple who do not like this version. It is much different as the original version, It sounnot like totaly different song.

I did not like it too much when I heared for the first time.

But now after 1000 listenings I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!§!!!

  • LOU REED first band was named THE BEATS just for misleading people to think they were THE BEATLES theirselves. it was just before THE BEATLES had their first record issued into USA.

  • I heard Lou Reed say he doesn't believe that britsh people should be making music. John Lennon is British. And he said he didn't like the Beatles at all. Which I think is a lie. Love Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground but John Lennon and the Beatles way better. Sorry folks. Its the truth. DON'T GET ME WRONG THOUGH.

  • It's the perfect choice.

  • Shut the fuck up, Donny.

  • This is an awesome interpretion of this song.

    Lou really drives it home.

Anyone who has felt this pain of jealousy can relate to this performance.

  • hands down best version of this fucking song...

    YOU ROCK LOU!

  • I like you Lou...but this is an atrocious cover.

  • Right who told Lou he could sing?

  • @jnmklo9 the same people who told Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen and IMHO that's pretty good company..

  • Dude, is that Dave Stewart in the background at around 1:27?

  • This is by far the best Beatles cover ever

  • @deadpoet86 not a beatles song. for fuck's sake...

  • @frusciante39 Grow up you picky little bitch the point was to exalt Lou Reeds interpretation of the song.

  • @deadpoet86 ooh get her! you're right though mate, i do need to just grow up, maybe i should go insult a stranger on the internet? that's what all the cool adults are doing isn't it?

if you don't wanna looks stupid, don't say stupid things

  • @frusciante39 If your concept of stupidity includes confusing a John Lennon song with a Beatles song, you need to reevaluate your life. Im sorry if offended you by calling you "picky little bitch" but seriously what was the point of your comment, proving every one that watches this video that your an expert on John Lennon? Again sorry but its a very wanky thing to do. Plus was their really I need for your "fuck sake" what were you trying to prove there that your frustrated with the world?

  • @deadpoet86 not having a youtube argument with you mate, get a life.

  • Every cover version is different. Lou Reed's, Frankie Miller's, Brian Ferry's, etc. They're all different, otherwise, what would be the point?

  • Great interpretation, Lou! Reed always does things his way and his most characteristic way. If you didn't like this version then you don't know nor understand Reed's music, because he has functioned and performed outside the mainstream, get that?

  • Lou hit that ball right out of the park. He hammered it, he rocked it, he battered it, he showed the pain, and he made it his. I believe that John would have gotten this rendition, and he would have enjoyed it. Well done, Lou.

    John, we still love you.

And to those of you who didn't get this, well ... you just didn't get it.

  • thats what i mean

hes making his version,... i dig that.. than just imitating the guy

  • i rather see a new version than he just imitating the guy

  • @juanpolar have you heard the Lennon version?

The vocal is nothing like this. Lou made this all his own with his own intensity and pain.

  • es como que no puede cantar y la pifia, no?

  • @carboxilandia ERROR, ES EL VIEJO REED HACIENDO CHICO CELOSO DE LENNON, EN UN HOMENAJE. ¿como queres que lo cante? asi ...

  • Lou making tribute for Johnny. no need to add they're both my favourite musicians:)

  • Guess that you dont need to be a good singer - IF you have a personality. Lou Reed and Bob Dylan taught us all about that!

  • I heard some good songs by Lou Reed and I seriously don't think he's a bad singer, but this performance is among the worst things I've ever seen and heard! God, how could he make such crap out of that lovely song?

No matter how great he usually might be; this one is bad, truly bad and that I hate to say it doesn't change it at all.

  • @tenshiyoma If you think this is bad then maybe you need to re-evaluate your life. If you wanna hear bad singing go listen to slipknot, slayer, pantera, lamb of god and such if you can call that singing. That is complete garbage. By the way Lou Reed is the greatest pyscedellic musician of all time. Don't like it GTFO.

  • @hermygagala Hey now, let's be reasonable here. You're putting down one closed-minded person by being closed-minded yourself. Slipknot may be trash but Corey Taylor is a FANTASTIC vocalist. Phil Anelmso of Pantera has a great voice for his genre as well. Slayer is pretty badass to me but vocally it's just yelling shit so point taken there.

I like Lou Reed because of his unorthodox style...it's part of his charm. Like Dylan, in that aspect. An acquired taste for sure though--I prefer VelUndrgrnd

  • How can an AETIST make a song of his own? Here's the answer.

  • C'mon. Lou Reed brings so much to the table on this one. I never listened so intently to the lyrics ever before. His delivery is so thoughtful. He has a limited range and he isn't a kid anymore, but I feel sorry for anyone who can't see the beauty in this. Lour Reed taught us rock and roll. He was there when the Beatles took flight.

  • lennon's greatness is in his melody and the way he sings his mind and heart. only he could interpret this song the best

  • if you're not a lou reed fan you probably hated this, and i understand that. i thought it was great though. the vocals were classic lou... this talking/singing style, i've grown to love it actually. i wasn't too big on the polished electric guitar sound though, wish they wouldve kept it acoustic

  • good comment - lou reed fans will love this, like i did. if you don't get lou reed, it will sound out of tune. still love bryan ferry's version best though.

  • great garage rock , grunge sound. Tell it Lou!

  • better a Lou Reed alive than a dead Johnny

  • REALLY???

    I mean REALLY?

so sad Lou had to make John turn over in his casket........POOR John

  • Lou really made this wonderful song his own. And THAT is a tribute!

  • magistrale

  • Im sorry but he butchers the vocals

  • i like lou reed, but this wasnt good. the music was but not the singin

  • I hope you're just kidding.

  • lou fucking reed is god

  • @CSXer ur lifes an epic fail. any1 who says epic fail needs to fukofffffff

  • I think he nails it. The part where he sings " I was feeling insecure. You might not uh. you might not uh. you might not love me anymore". like he was holding back his own tears from embarrassment and knowing because he was an idiot; she cried. well done. nails it.

  • I for One think Lou! Did An Killer Job! Thanks For Sharing this !!!!

  • Hell yes. I understand this might not be to everyone's taste but he does give this innocent song a much needed bit of realism. It's like Lennon wrote something for a an ideal world and Reed performs it for an actual world where people get angry and bitter. At least that's what I think. I love it.Think Lennon would've love it too.

  • this is horrible >:(

  • hmmm... did Lou know Johnny?

  • sometimes Lou tries too hard...and he blows it....yuck

  • Comment removed

  • Lou Reed makes every song he does his.

  • Fome la version de tan espectacular temazo...

  • as usual, lou reed does what he was born for; split the atom of sound and divorce audiences down the middle, you either love it or hate it. i don't get people who don't get it. this shit's outta sight

  • The worst cover ever made!

  • NO.

  • OK- it is NOT John Lennon.

But Lou Reed has his own edgy style of singing which really makes the song. Anyone who has gone through the pangs of jealousy and heart-break can relate to this version of a great song.

  • Yeah. I know a lot of people who hate this cover because they don't "get" Lou Reed. This is Lou Reed to the max. It's not for everyone, but if you're a fan of Lou's or The Velvet Underground then I find that you will enjoy it more than non-fans.

  • You know, I think Lou gave this some thought.

  • freaking awesome. loved it

  • you bastard

  • I liked it.. tho I think John is untouchable

  • no no nooo, what makes this song good is the melody. where is it? :(:(:(:(

  • If you don't know where the melody is I think you need your ears checked.

  • i know where the melody should be, and i can hear where it isn't. but this is coming from someone called tangled up in blue, and i bet you think dylan is melodic too.

  • This version is absolutely off the hook. Lou rocks and has rocked for more than 40 freakin' years.

  • Lou sings with the anguish of what one feels in such cases.

  • yeah this is a really bad version of the song. sounds like a tone deaf country singer... though i am a fan of lou reed.

  • great!

  • fucking awesome amazing perofmance ignor the critics of this cover its awesome!!

  • Lou will always be THE MAN!!!! This was amazing in concert!

  • Goddamn the guitar sounds so good in the solo. lou reed is so ahead of his time man.

  • This is fucking awesome peoples, are you all deaf or something??

  • this was brilliant - Lou Reed is real.

  • THIS

    IS

    LOU

    REED

  • i totally agree with you

  • Rock on Lou!!

  • don´t know what you mean.. i lke this version

  • This is ROCK man......

  • lou's voice is sooo shot. he can't even sing his own songs anymore. why the fuck didn't they bring bryan ferry in to do his oh-so-wrenching cover of this beauty?

  • thats fucking dyer! :/

  • Lou Reed = my old Granny (86) sings John Lennon...

    Disaster!

  • This is the worst cover I have seen it. :) And mind you I like some of Lou Reed's music. Something was wrong with him here.

  • He probably beat somebody he regretted beating

  • People who dont' think Lou can sing, probably don't think Bob Dylan can't sing either.

    Obviously, you don't get it.

  • Lou reed, genius

  • un version rockera poderosa!!!!! lou reed is the best

  • Que bueno que aprecies eso, esta versión no es "delicada" como la original, por eso los que no conocen a Lou o estan prejuiciados, creen que es mala...para nada, bien diferente y fuerte como tu dices!

  • EPIC

  • I like Lou Reed. His music is incredible, but I'm not the biggest fan of this cover. The magic is missing, the twinkle that gave this song life. I don't know...

  • People who think Ron Wood or Lou Reed cannot sing this song; go out and buy a fucking Wham record morons.

  • what?

  • yes... and don't wake me up before you go go :DD

  • is it me or does it sound like lou reed is threatening the woman rather than apologizing.

  • awful, outta time, cant sing and just not right.....

  • it's a tribute, he got emotional

    grow a brain

  • Fuck Off Dickhead

  • You fuck off!

  • No.....

  • Fuckkk, wonderful powerful version, you rock Lou... across the universe... you rock...!!

  • I love so much the fact that Lou gives that tribute to John !!

  • Somebody buy this guy a karaoke machine and get him off the stage!

  • Anyone know this with Ronnie Wood? It's brilliant!

    (Love you John Lennon- R.I.P.)

  • I love Lou Reed but nobody just sing as well

    Jealous guy that Brian Ferry.

  • i was thinking the same exact same thing.

Brian ferry owns this song. other than the ex beatle who wrote it, i mean

  • john sings it way better

  • J'adore Lou Reed;Mais personne ne peu la chanter mieux que Brian Ferry

  • Of course he "had to butcher" the song, don´t you notice that his musical work consist precisely in that? Carnage music

  • Lou gives this song a complete new life, reminds me a bit of Jimi, fantastic the old Master, shine on Lou

  • Unbelievable! As a cover Lou nailed it, the emotion is palatable. I am prejudice though, Lou is one of my favorite performers and Jealous Guy is one on my favorite songs.

  • Lou Reed is capable of brilliance: Velvets, Transformer, Berlin, Metal Machine Music, Street Hassle, Bells, New York... and, contrary to what fracuredminds claims, has produced some classic records in the last 30 years. But this is hopeless and sounds like the work of a retard.

  • This is a pretty good cover. Better than the original.

Roxy Music's take is definitive though.

  • ...so sad that you don't understand the core of this song...

  • The core of the song has nothing to do with Lou Reed butchering it. So sad.... my friend... get a hearing aid and listen to the original version, that's where the real core lies. But I must say, each to their own.

  • killed this song

  • Glad someone else agrees with me. If your gonna touch one of Lennon's best, you should be at your best.

  • Lou Reed ripped on the Beatles quite a bit in the 70's, saying he hated them. Nice to see he's lightened up a bit.

  • Lou has his own style. And those of you who say he is fundamentally shit please sod off, he is one of the best songwriters of the last century and this one.

  • Yeah I couldn't agree more mate. As for someone previously Quoting Reed as "remaining fundamentally shit" then obviously this user has never heard the albums Berlin or Transformer? People make me laugh!

  • God I loved Lou's version. It was so touching and powerful all at the same time. He brought John's lyrics to life. I could feel the pain as he sung it.

  • Lou Reed is so special. As a musician he has managed to sell millions of records, while remaining fundamentally shit, for over 30 years. A talent he shares with Van Morrison

  • I meant this was a perfect song for him. Only I am perfect!

  • He has done this even better, but this is perfect for him.

  • Dear 18 year old. Check out Take a Walk on the Wild Side.

  • I remember that day, when I saw this shit... was fucking amazing!

  • I love John Lennon and remember watching this on tv years ago. I was blown away by Lou's cover of this song. Excellent.

  • being an 18 year old who doesn't know this guy, i thought he murdered the song. but listening closely to him, his explosive voice that i cannot describe, it shoots shivers all over me. it was so powerful that lou reed just shoved my mouth down my ass.

  • 18 and you dont know lou reed. what the fuck?

  • One of the best covers in the world... Pure heart.

  • Pardon my French, but this performance is FUCKING INCREDIBLE. My all-time favorite Lennon song, I can't imagine ANYone doing a better cover of it.

The show this came from was very interesting, it was meant as a Lennon birthday special but ended up being a quasi-tribute to NYC right after 9/11. There were some laughable performances, but not this one - Lou blew EVERYone else off the stage.

  • Lou Reed is one of the greatest. Listen this beautiful song and feel the power Mr. Reed brings to this.

  • simply amazing!

  • I love Lou Reed for several years now, and it's the first time I see him covering a song!

Good choice mister Reed, simply amazing.

  • another cover Lou does very well is Dylan's 'foot of pride' search for: lou reed foot of pride

  • Foot of Pride is a great song - Dylans reading of it with the E Street band is magnificent. It was an obvious cover for Reed. This is far more pure and to the point though. I think Lou is amazing but this cover is totally from the heart , foot of pride seemed to be an easy choice but this is pure heart on the sleeve material.

  • I love this guy....raw and real

  • cool, i've been looking for this for quite some time; i love it!
