This is freaking excellent! Lou always puts his heart into every song he sings. This was infused with a power that is sorely lacking in the original and the Roxy Music cover. LOVE YOU LOU!
There was a time when I didn't get Lou Reed. He's not an easy ask for everyone -- especially people with conventional tastes, or those coming in from great singing groups like The Beatles (as I was).
Those who don't like him, STFU and go listen to "The Velvet Underground & Nico" and all of your head scratching will cease (assuming you have taste in music). If you're coming from more pop sounds, maybe start out with "Sunday Morning." Either way, just go do it and come back when you do.
@94joecity really, then why did the entire audience jump to the feet at the end.. I was at this taping and it was amazing.. He brings his own soul to this song...
LOU REED first band was named THE BEATS just for misleading people to think they were THE BEATLES theirselves. it was just before THE BEATLES had their first record issued into USA.
I heard Lou Reed say he doesn't believe that britsh people should be making music. John Lennon is British. And he said he didn't like the Beatles at all. Which I think is a lie. Love Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground but John Lennon and the Beatles way better. Sorry folks. Its the truth. DON'T GET ME WRONG THOUGH.
@deadpoet86 ooh get her! you're right though mate, i do need to just grow up, maybe i should go insult a stranger on the internet? that's what all the cool adults are doing isn't it?

@frusciante39 If your concept of stupidity includes confusing a John Lennon song with a Beatles song, you need to reevaluate your life. Im sorry if offended you by calling you "picky little bitch" but seriously what was the point of your comment, proving every one that watches this video that your an expert on John Lennon? Again sorry but its a very wanky thing to do. Plus was their really I need for your "fuck sake" what were you trying to prove there that your frustrated with the world?
Great interpretation, Lou! Reed always does things his way and his most characteristic way. If you didn't like this version then you don't know nor understand Reed's music, because he has functioned and performed outside the mainstream, get that?
Lou hit that ball right out of the park. He hammered it, he rocked it, he battered it, he showed the pain, and he made it his. I believe that John would have gotten this rendition, and he would have enjoyed it. Well done, Lou.
John, we still love you.
And to those of you who didn't get this, well ... you just didn't get it.
I heard some good songs by Lou Reed and I seriously don't think he's a bad singer, but this performance is among the worst things I've ever seen and heard! God, how could he make such crap out of that lovely song?
No matter how great he usually might be; this one is bad, truly bad and that I hate to say it doesn't change it at all.
@tenshiyoma If you think this is bad then maybe you need to re-evaluate your life. If you wanna hear bad singing go listen to slipknot, slayer, pantera, lamb of god and such if you can call that singing. That is complete garbage. By the way Lou Reed is the greatest pyscedellic musician of all time. Don't like it GTFO.
@hermygagala Hey now, let's be reasonable here. You're putting down one closed-minded person by being closed-minded yourself. Slipknot may be trash but Corey Taylor is a FANTASTIC vocalist. Phil Anelmso of Pantera has a great voice for his genre as well. Slayer is pretty badass to me but vocally it's just yelling shit so point taken there.
I like Lou Reed because of his unorthodox style...it's part of his charm. Like Dylan, in that aspect. An acquired taste for sure though--I prefer VelUndrgrnd
C'mon. Lou Reed brings so much to the table on this one. I never listened so intently to the lyrics ever before. His delivery is so thoughtful. He has a limited range and he isn't a kid anymore, but I feel sorry for anyone who can't see the beauty in this. Lour Reed taught us rock and roll. He was there when the Beatles took flight.
if you're not a lou reed fan you probably hated this, and i understand that. i thought it was great though. the vocals were classic lou... this talking/singing style, i've grown to love it actually. i wasn't too big on the polished electric guitar sound though, wish they wouldve kept it acoustic
good comment - lou reed fans will love this, like i did. if you don't get lou reed, it will sound out of tune. still love bryan ferry's version best though.
I think he nails it. The part where he sings " I was feeling insecure. You might not uh. you might not uh. you might not love me anymore". like he was holding back his own tears from embarrassment and knowing because he was an idiot; she cried. well done. nails it.
Hell yes. I understand this might not be to everyone's taste but he does give this innocent song a much needed bit of realism. It's like Lennon wrote something for a an ideal world and Reed performs it for an actual world where people get angry and bitter. At least that's what I think. I love it.Think Lennon would've love it too.
as usual, lou reed does what he was born for; split the atom of sound and divorce audiences down the middle, you either love it or hate it. i don't get people who don't get it. this shit's outta sight
But Lou Reed has his own edgy style of singing which really makes the song. Anyone who has gone through the pangs of jealousy and heart-break can relate to this version of a great song.
Yeah. I know a lot of people who hate this cover because they don't "get" Lou Reed. This is Lou Reed to the max. It's not for everyone, but if you're a fan of Lou's or The Velvet Underground then I find that you will enjoy it more than non-fans.
i know where the melody should be, and i can hear where it isn't. but this is coming from someone called tangled up in blue, and i bet you think dylan is melodic too.
lou's voice is sooo shot. he can't even sing his own songs anymore. why the fuck didn't they bring bryan ferry in to do his oh-so-wrenching cover of this beauty?
Que bueno que aprecies eso, esta versión no es "delicada" como la original, por eso los que no conocen a Lou o estan prejuiciados, creen que es mala...para nada, bien diferente y fuerte como tu dices!
I like Lou Reed. His music is incredible, but I'm not the biggest fan of this cover. The magic is missing, the twinkle that gave this song life. I don't know...
Unbelievable! As a cover Lou nailed it, the emotion is palatable. I am prejudice though, Lou is one of my favorite performers and Jealous Guy is one on my favorite songs.
Lou Reed is capable of brilliance: Velvets, Transformer, Berlin, Metal Machine Music, Street Hassle, Bells, New York... and, contrary to what fracuredminds claims, has produced some classic records in the last 30 years. But this is hopeless and sounds like the work of a retard.

Pardon my French, but this performance is FUCKING INCREDIBLE. My all-time favorite Lennon song, I can't imagine ANYone doing a better cover of it.
The show this came from was very interesting, it was meant as a Lennon birthday special but ended up being a quasi-tribute to NYC right after 9/11. There were some laughable performances, but not this one - Lou blew EVERYone else off the stage.
Foot of Pride is a great song - Dylans reading of it with the E Street band is magnificent. It was an obvious cover for Reed. This is far more pure and to the point though. I think Lou is amazing but this cover is totally from the heart , foot of pride seemed to be an easy choice but this is pure heart on the sleeve material.

Lou Reed is one of the greatest. Listen this beautiful song and feel the power Mr. Reed brings to this.

I love Lou Reed for several years now, and it's the first time I see him covering a song!
Good choice mister Reed, simply amazing.

another cover Lou does very well is Dylan's 'foot of pride' search for: lou reed foot of pride
