"Mars, the next logical step on the path of exploration, is dismissed as too costly." This makes me shudder. Money is something I'd call the most irrelevant thing there is, when it comes to things that actually matter. Do we have the resources to send man to the Mars? Sure as hell we do. Paul Hill you cheese ball. "they absolutely believe that they are the one's... "
I'm sure they believe they are talented and capable and will do the best they can. And in allegiance with their talented colleagues, and with all the previous successes and talent that has already imbued the space program they feel the current mission has a very good chance of success.
I still don't understand what REQUIREMENTS the space shuttle was created to fulfill. Was it just a temporary space station we could send up for a few orbits around the Earth... But for what purpose? I am unaware of any Earth shattering knowledge that came from micro-gravity experiments, even after the ISS. I really don't think the Space Shuttle was about exploration at all, and the Enterprise name in itself was probably unsuited for that reason.
@zassounotsukushi I may not understand your quistion enough as it already seems you would know this .....but the space shuttle was originaly designed as an inter-continental ballistic missile taught up by Hitler and his mates during the war and then its technology was further developed for space exploration.
Sorry for that, but NASA has no money. Forget going to the moon and mars or asteroids. 1 Flight and the NASA must fly with russian rockets. The private industry tries to build some spacecrafts... But I've seen no human transportation system.

Why do the crew still fly to the Cape. Two of the Apollo astronaut core were killed when their planes crashed. It just seems an unnecessary risk. Unless the idea is that all the crew aren't on one plane at the same time.

I agree with the sentiment of peace not war, however this should be about major countries combining space craft construction and exploration for the whole of Earth, We need a space station and centre on the Moon to then move into true space exploration.

America is freaking broke. I support the space program but that should be the cherry on the reestablished economy cake. Until then cutbacks are necessary on all levels.
@Clausfarre cutbacks across the grid are totally unnecessary. The vast majority of America's budget is in the military. If that were to be cut back to a self defense force ONLY, then there wouldn't be anywhere near as much of a budget problem.
@luccaskunk Although the deficit is unimaginably gigantic (and cutbacks desperately needed) I totally agree with you. If America focused on protecting only the borders and not fighting iin faraway countries a lot of money would be saved. The American military budget is insane.
@Clausfarre As the only western country that can guarantee exploration in space and whatnot, my opinion is that America should hugely increase their NASA budget. The responsibility is on them to take extend humanity's reach in this universe. They're a force for peace as far as I can tell, too, and I know that in the eyes of a lot of liberals and hippier people than myself, a slight cutback on the military budget over there would be welcome, and in its place a slight increase in NASA funds!
@Keadin That's another thing with all the technological progress we've made in the past century, we shouldn't be having these problems. Yet we are still forced to compete over resources, we should have stopped using 50 years ago.
It's all about the almighty dollar. Science could have us all living like kings, yet we choose to live in an inevitably failing economic system. For what, so the overwhelming minority can continue to horde money, power and destroy the earth ecosystem in the process?
Good video ;) But i have to say but because i know that we have knowledge to go far beyond this. Sad truth is it is being supressed by the power hunger lunatics who seeks to gain control over people by not letting it out and use it against them.
With the budget cuts...there will be no successor in the near future. We wont be going back to space for a long time most likely. The US government even wanted to back out of any involvement with the International space station!...
It makes me wonder if we have another secret space program. You don't really think we're just giving up do you? No, I think we do have other, more efficient means of transporting people into space. It's probably a lot cheaper and more reliable too. But since they're using technology we're not supposed to know about, as far as we're concerned the space program is DEAD. I guess keeping the war machine up and running, to keep fighting over resources we don't really need anymore is more important.
@DeathBYDesign666 The VASIMR rocket is supposed to be tested on the international space station by 2013. Much faster and more efficient than what we have now. It's supposed to reach 120,000+ MPH. The concept was researched by Franklin Chang-Diaz with NASA for years and later developed at his company, the Ad Astra Rocket Company. It's already been test fired so I guess we'll see how well it works in 2013.
@DeathBYDesign666 Yeh most technologies in flight and space are ages old they have surely invented some other sort of spacecraft and probably already are on the moon.
it's very sad that i will not see space exploration or technology. We have it all wrong i believe we should spend money on exploration , space programs with no budgets and not war or fighting over beliefs and religions.
We as a global race of humans should not waste PAPER money on supplys for this. money is just a symbol. This is moving forword for the human race :(
...im still confused... will will there no longer be a space craft that "lands" ? ...are they going back to the ocean "crash landing"? if so... ill miss the shuttle deeply. =(
INCREDIBLE... I dbout this country would be as excited about manned spaceship landing on Mars as America was about the moon-landing... what with the short attention span and focus on celebrities.
Just because NASA in not involved does not mean a end to the space program, There are a few private companies working on cheaper space shuttle like vehicles.
I think the private companies would do a much better job than NASA... matter of fact, if it were private we would have landed on Mars already... so long as there isn't a bunch of government red tape getting in the way, let the private companies take over space exploration.
@DrRapistaa - Batman approves this message. Besides, this is an educational and presumably non profit video so there really isn't a case for infringement.
Thank you, a very interesting and timely video. No matter the rights and wrongs of the shuttle development, the reasons, the excuses, the payoffs or losses, it still represented an enormously successful chapter in the history of space, or near Earth exploration.
Having enjoyed ( and felt heartache at times ) this exciting ride, I look forward to the next step.
Ah, the booster test site is not in Clearfield, it's outside Corrine, way out away from the population centers of the Wasatch Front. ATK's offices are in West Valley City. Looks like they found an ATK warehouse at Freeport Center (a site near Clearfield), and decided the rocket tests were going on there. Pretty poor research.

What will happen...

The space inspired a whole generation of young students into math and science. Where is that today? Jersey shore? American Idol?

It makes me wonder if we have another secret space program. You don't really think we're just giving up do you? No, I think we do have other, more efficient means of transporting people into space. It's probably a lot cheaper and more reliable too. But since they're using technology we're not supposed to know about, as far as we're concerned the space program is DEAD. I guess keeping the war machine up and running, to keep fighting over resources we don't really need anymore is more important.
DeathBYDesign666 9 months ago 18
@DeathBYDesign666 The VASIMR rocket is supposed to be tested on the international space station by 2013. Much faster and more efficient than what we have now. It's supposed to reach 120,000+ MPH. The concept was researched by Franklin Chang-Diaz with NASA for years and later developed at his company, the Ad Astra Rocket Company. It's already been test fired so I guess we'll see how well it works in 2013.

Look up the Orion program, they are not killing the space program, they are killing the space 'shuttle' program.

hotfrenchgay 9 months ago
It's the technology human kind deserves, but not the one it needs right now.
So, we'll end the space shuttle program. Because it can take it.
Because it's not a pioneer.
It's a silent spacecraft. An accomplished explorer.

INCREDIBLE... I dbout this country would be as excited about manned spaceship landing on Mars as America was about the moon-landing... what with the short attention span and focus on celebrities.
marcdaddy33 9 months ago
@marcdaddy33 so lets send a celebrity on the first mission to mars. I vote for Beiber.

lol... great idea... or even better, let's send the president and congress
marcdaddy33 9 months ago
@marcdaddy33 that would cost too much in fuel =P
then again we could attempt to use all the bullshit that comes out of congress to fuel the flight.
stiimuli 9 months ago
@stiimuli If we were to send a Celebrity, better to send someone more deserving to go. Beiber doesn't deserve the credit.

Just because NASA in not involved does not mean a end to the space program, There are a few private companies working on cheaper space shuttle like vehicles.
nicpetnic 9 months ago
@nicpetnic
I think the private companies would do a much better job than NASA... matter of fact, if it were private we would have landed on Mars already... so long as there isn't a bunch of government red tape getting in the way, let the private companies take over space exploration.
