  • I always wondered why when I watched this as a child with my father he would be laughing more than I was--now that I am an adult--I get it!

  • Soupy, Pookie and White Fang, my all time favorites. None better. Comedy today is sad.

  • The Old West --- the video is really old. lol

  • I was lucky enough to be growing up in Detroit way back in late 1950's through 1960's. We watched Soupy on WXYZ TV in Detroit (where it was filmed). These old videos are still so funny today. On TV today, everything is scripted on teleprompters. No spontaneous humor. The closest thing to Soupy was Pee Wee Herman, way back in the 1980's. - gregg in Sarasota, FL (home of Pee Wee Herman).

  • I used to be in the studio when his shows aired, and it was hilarious! He was so talented. The crew had a great time with him as well. I have very fond memories of being in that studio. In fact the first Muppet's pilot was shot in this studio! (I was the one who recorded it) Soupy's shows were only recorded after his suspension, some of the tapes DO exist, but I don't think we will ever get to see them. :(

  • It seems to me that Soupy Sales was in tune with the divine.

  • ah yes..it was the best of times and sad times too but soupy always made you laugh

  • WHERE IS POOKIE NOW AND WHO OWNS HIM

  • @unclebill713 Pookie passed away on December 22, 1999, exactly three months after Soupy Sales himself passed. After Sales died, Pookie, looking for financial sustenance, turned to a New Orleans sugar daddy by the name of Crawfish Houdini whom gave Pookie ample renumeration to sustain his upkeep in comfort. Unfortunately this involved unsavory carnal favors that resulted in terminal pathology for Pookie, God rest him.

  • This is one of the Soupy funniest sketches of all time

  • @zeuqzavaj - I removed your post. First, it is offensive to Catholics. Second, it wasn't funny. Third, it was a quote from Robin Williams which explains why it wasn't funny. Last, I don't like Robin Williams.

Any other such posts will get you blocked.

  • A tie score!

  • My dad grew up watching Soupy. When I watch him I know where my father found his sense of humor. It's almost like I'm watching my dad instead. RIP Soupy

  • This is why I quit Hebrew School. Couldn't miss Soupy.

  • This is the reason why I quit Hebrew school. Couldn't live without watching Soupy Sales.

  • the first bit was hysterical- the punchline came out of nowhere and the timing was so perfect!

  • mamojica: Mothra cannot find the proper words to sufficiently thank you for this elegant post. Every time viewed=Funny(see:Pookie+ segment, especially!)\

These thanks should have come earlier, but like most, Mothra was, and is still, stunned.

Thanks also for knowing what you are talking about. That fact alone officially separates you from so many YouTubers.

I'll keep a benevolent eye on you from way up here...! Thanks again, buddy! Long live Soupy!

    Mothra (yep, the giant moth)

  • whats the name of the song pookie is singing?! i cant get it outta my head!

  • The name of the song is "Chew Tobacco Rag." The singer is Tim Tayshun. There was a CD available, but it is now out of print. You can buy it used, but do it fast.

  • Soupy was the best un-correct kid's tv host.

  • Thanks for the memories Soupy, you were the best and you never had a equal. May you rest in peace.

  • Dang, drinking all that liquor and on a kiddie show too. It is amazing how much they could get away with back in the olden days!

  • RIP and good bless Soupy, you were a big part of my childhood.

  • Where has all the talent gone? Oh, that's right...reality shows!

  • This stuff is hilarious!

  • Binge drinking, chewing tobacco, and sports betting -- now that's my idea of a kiddie's show! I remember on one show Soupy warned, "Now remember, don't drink and drive. You may hit a bump and spill your drink!"

  • Bwahahaha! Choice silliness! Thanks.

  • Many a day was spent laughing with Soupy Sales after school....You just had to love him...Rest in Peace Soupy

  • GOD BLESS SOUPY RIP

  • So long, funny man.

  • Oh my...that was so funny...as you can see the show was aimed towards the parents....drinking and spitting....LOLOLOL.

  • the pooers that be would NEVER allow a song about smoking/chewing tabacco for our tender children to listen to today, but bring on the SEXUAL INYOURENDOS all day long for kids to see, now that is ok!

  • Do I see inspiration for the muppets here? Yeah, we used to watch this all the time in Detroit. Great stuff! Remember the secenes with pookie's dad? The huge lions head?

  • this would never pass for a kids show

    now adays

  • lol

  • Pookie mooned the audience LOL!

  • Soupy Sales - my first TV Love

He's Great. Couldn't wait for the show when I was a kid (a teen actually).

  • "SHUT UP I'M DRINKING!" ... Freaking Hilarious!!!

  • We would look forward to the show on Saturday. (We were 19 at the time). Our parents wondered what the hell we were doing watching it..little did they know....

  • Doesn't Mel Gibson have a lot of Soupy Sales in him? I see it here!

  • Now that you mention it, they both have the same shape face, the same eyes and that same mischievious smile!

  • drinkin' whiskey and spittin' chew? I was one of the kids watching this stuff, and I can't believe I'm so shocked at seeing it now!

  • Amazing! I thought I was too old to watch this. I was attracted to the adult humor - rife with sarcasm and rich with wit yet filled with love and innocence. Fun is fun.

Why isn't there a Soupy Sales DVD collection????

  • Drinking whiskey on a kids show?

Finally a happy hour that both

    kids and adults could share.

  • Lots of early TV kids' show and cartoons made fun of drinking (as well as gambling, hot babes, gratuitous violence) and none of us went bad. By the way, Soupy sure does look good in that hat!

  • Yes! Cross-dressing Bugs, can-can girls with Yosemite Sam, and how about that sex-pot Betty Boop?

  • The song is "Chew Tobacco Rag" by Tim Tayshun. You can find the recording at Amazon.

  • @mamojica I think the singer is Red Ingle.

  • @yowzephyr You're right. Red Ingle and The Natural Seven. Their album is available once again on Amazon in an expensive import.

  • I wonder who is really singing "Chew Tabaco

    Rag"?
