I was lucky enough to be growing up in Detroit way back in late 1950's through 1960's. We watched Soupy on WXYZ TV in Detroit (where it was filmed). These old videos are still so funny today. On TV today, everything is scripted on teleprompters. No spontaneous humor. The closest thing to Soupy was Pee Wee Herman, way back in the 1980's. - gregg in Sarasota, FL (home of Pee Wee Herman).
I used to be in the studio when his shows aired, and it was hilarious! He was so talented. The crew had a great time with him as well. I have very fond memories of being in that studio. In fact the first Muppet's pilot was shot in this studio! (I was the one who recorded it) Soupy's shows were only recorded after his suspension, some of the tapes DO exist, but I don't think we will ever get to see them. :(
@unclebill713 Pookie passed away on December 22, 1999, exactly three months after Soupy Sales himself passed. After Sales died, Pookie, looking for financial sustenance, turned to a New Orleans sugar daddy by the name of Crawfish Houdini whom gave Pookie ample renumeration to sustain his upkeep in comfort. Unfortunately this involved unsavory carnal favors that resulted in terminal pathology for Pookie, God rest him.
@zeuqzavaj - I removed your post. First, it is offensive to Catholics. Second, it wasn't funny. Third, it was a quote from Robin Williams which explains why it wasn't funny. Last, I don't like Robin Williams.
My dad grew up watching Soupy. When I watch him I know where my father found his sense of humor. It's almost like I'm watching my dad instead. RIP Soupy
mamojica: Mothra cannot find the proper words to sufficiently thank you for this elegant post. Every time viewed=Funny(see:Pookie+ segment, especially!)\
These thanks should have come earlier, but like most, Mothra was, and is still, stunned.
Thanks also for knowing what you are talking about. That fact alone officially separates you from so many YouTubers.
I'll keep a benevolent eye on you from way up here...! Thanks again, buddy! Long live Soupy!
The name of the song is "Chew Tobacco Rag." The singer is Tim Tayshun. There was a CD available, but it is now out of print. You can buy it used, but do it fast.
Binge drinking, chewing tobacco, and sports betting -- now that's my idea of a kiddie's show! I remember on one show Soupy warned, "Now remember, don't drink and drive. You may hit a bump and spill your drink!"
the pooers that be would NEVER allow a song about smoking/chewing tabacco for our tender children to listen to today, but bring on the SEXUAL INYOURENDOS all day long for kids to see, now that is ok!
Do I see inspiration for the muppets here? Yeah, we used to watch this all the time in Detroit. Great stuff! Remember the secenes with pookie's dad? The huge lions head?
We would look forward to the show on Saturday. (We were 19 at the time). Our parents wondered what the hell we were doing watching it..little did they know....
Amazing! I thought I was too old to watch this. I was attracted to the adult humor - rife with sarcasm and rich with wit yet filled with love and innocence. Fun is fun.
Lots of early TV kids' show and cartoons made fun of drinking (as well as gambling, hot babes, gratuitous violence) and none of us went bad. By the way, Soupy sure does look good in that hat!
I always wondered why when I watched this as a child with my father he would be laughing more than I was--now that I am an adult--I get it!
