Can anyone find a link for this song as it was used in Peter Weir's 'The Year of Living Dangerously'? It for me was one of the most emotional cinematic moments, no doubt infused by Kiri Te Kanewa's performance.
I bet on a horse named 'Lady Kiri' when i went to a horse race, and i bet on that horse because of Kiri Te Kanawa.... and i won. It wasnt big money, i won 60 bucks for the 2 dollar bet, but hell, it was still cool.
Provate ad ascoltare questo pezzo in cuffia mentre decollate con l'aereo mentre vi porta in alto, verso le nuvole... immaginate il cielo azzurro e le nubi bianche... Io ho provato questo magico effetto. Roba da altre dimensioni.
Kiri's voice is simply perfect for this type of music. All lieder like this should be sung by a lyric, hands down. On top of that, her insane phrasing takes Strauss's music to an entirely new level.
What I really appreciate is that she never started to darken her voice to much like Renee Fleming (Flemings Mozart Recital Recording has been fantasticè!)
And Dame Kiri never ever started to press her voice to much!
She has been every time elegant and a real legatosinging LIRIC Soprano with an grand royal timbre !
lam. Kiri has a voice that Renee does try very hard to copy. However, there is always something lacking when Renee does it. I don't think Renee darkens her voice deliberately. It just happens. I just wish that Renee would try being herself and not copying others. This is where singers like Gundula and Kiri succeed. They are unique and set their own standards..
Many thanks for your information. By coincidence I was watching the said DVD last evening and realised that my memory was faulty, although these 'four last songs' probably would always have strong association with death for Dame Kiri. You and a number of others have been so good as to post so many clips from one of my favourite singers. Thanks again for your generosity!
Thank you, thank you for posting this, Amethyst888. This whole concert is simply sublime. All the beautiful trills wafting on and on. I have never seen Solti so reverential and Kiri so other-worldly: they are inspired and possessed by the divine muse! Did Dame Kiri have the tragic news about her father dying before this concert? At the end of each song in this concert she seemed rather sad; but it made the whole experience of listening to and watching her even more movingly beautiful.
From the master of ' Tone Poem ' Dame Te Kanawa and Sir Solti made a legendary recording. Heavenly !

Too bad the recorded sound is so fuzzy and distorted; the performance is sublime. Can nothing be done to make it sound better?

She doesn't try to copy very gracious just same production of voice
interesting a frind told me her brahms requiem is the best because of her long breath control..
