my hs wind symphony is playing this and when i play the last three chords my WHOLE FREAKING HEAD IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE! but its a pretty awesome piece, my band director did some awesome stuff with it.
"At the time of the work's premier, this movement was not performed because the professional wind band Grainger had chosen was unable to play the movement." taken directly from Wikipedia on Lord Melbourne.
I was listening to a pianist talk. The pianist said there was no such thing as 1/4. Then I told her that it did exist and that I had played it. She said: " D: No way!" I said: "Yes. Grainger wrote that." She said: "Oh. That explains it."
@tromuniapp yeah it means you divide the feeling of five into groups of two and three, or vice versa. Holst did this too in Mars, although it was just written as 5/4, you could feel it in groups of 3 and 2. I've seen 2+3+3/8
@tromuniapp nope...havent heard of it, ill look it up. im a sophomore french horn player, but play all the brass instruments. trombone is the most fun in jazz band, but its hard.
Even though I am a bass trombone player and am loving the loud notes, my favorite part is the oboe/piccolo duet. Awesome melody and cooler tone color!
I always thought that the last chord should go right into the next movement. It just doesn't feel right when there's a huge pause before the next movement is played.
The fact that Grainger radically changed Wind Band conventions just to maintain the integrity of the folk song speaks volumes about the time of man and artist that he was.
We're playing Lincolnshire Posy in concert band and this one piece would have to be my favorite out of the entire collection of movements. Though what gets me are the different rhythms and the free time portions in some of the sections. Though I am playing Clarinet 2 on this piece, the counting and rhythms can be tricky. The entire band freaked out at the weird time signatures. 2/4^1/2? Geez....That is a big "No, sir" when you look at it for the first time.
im in the wind ensemble which is the top band of our school and this piece is not easy but its fun. Playing the oboe is fun and the soloes are too but this 1 geez weird time signatures

@airie65 because it was only one measure on 2.5/4 if it were 2 measures then 5/8 would make sense

@orangebhuddy29 It actually comes out to be 5/8. Not sure why Granger wanted it 2.5/4

props to percussion. They just sit back keeping track through the whole thing, waiting for their couple of rolls and hits.

they took measures 10-13 a little too fast for my taste; but goddamn can that brass section shake every bone in your body; AMAZING
