@sierria64 tough act to follow but the Stones held their own but you're right James Brown was on the top of his game and the Stones weren't tha far off either Tami Show the most underrated Rock Show EVER...
i saw james many times both live and on tv. the tami concert is the epitome of a james brown concert. he was at his best. the last time i saw him in lake tahoe, as with the other times i saw him live in the 90's, he had the same guy doin the cape stuff as in this film. the only difference was that he had three different colored capes for his "revivals". he really earned the nickname of the hardest working man in show business. man do i miss him. eddie murphy does the best imitation of jb btw.
Seen this many times - always the best. Never noticed that the drummer lost one of his sticks at the end of Prisoner of Love. Wonder if James fined him?
Let's give THE FAMOUS FLAMES some love too ! James wasn't just up there singing and dancing by himself. Bobby Byrd, Bobby Bennett and Lloyd Stallworth are also PURE DYNAMITE !!
I still can't see how The Stones were to close this out. It was 1964 and they were just on the come. They hadn't recored Satisfaction, Gimme Shelter or none of the signature 60s Stones songs. The bookers messed up on that one because they had to know what they were getting when slotting James.
@TerraRyzinglives Legend has it Mick Jagger refused to go onstage after JB's performance at first. But even more astounding, the act they used to draw a big audience was . . . Lesley Gore.
@SSArcher11 I have read that too. Can you imagine having to follow this? I saw him in the late sixties and I have never experienced such a performance, the energy was beyond belief. I saw the Stones too in 1975, they were good as well, but nothing could ever touch a live show by James and the Flames.
@SSArcher11 According to the DVD liner notes, neither Jagger nor Brown were happy about the performance arrangement; Jagger begged to go on ANYWHERE else but after JB&tFF. But the Stones did hold their own with their set; they scored their first Top 10 shortly afterward ("Time Is On My Side"), and from there it only got better. James Brown and The Stones were to the 60s what Aerosmith & RUN DMC were to the 80s!
There's no denying that this film was a seminal moment in Rock & Roll history!
I was a 12 year old-blond haired- blue eyed- beach boy when I was fortunate enough to attend the Tami show in Santa Monica. James totally blew everyone out of the water and I've never been so thoroughly entertained. ...... needless to say I've been a fan ever since, thanks JB
saw this in 64 and allways remembered that they had to throw mick out on the stage after james brown performance. who could blame mick? that was one hell of an act to follow
@rza68 Fuck that he is in hell living it up, heaven is for boring squares that just want to grovel at the celestial dictator...im going to hell all my mates are there
@CrazyRoofTop - Let me put it this way: I saw him live when I was in college. That was 30 years ago. To this day it is the most electric live show I have ever seen in my life. please, Please, PLEASE, indeed!
Yep...this is James Brown at his FIRST career peak. Nobody could touch him...as the Rolling Stones found out. It was a great show all around, but JB was THE highlight! A very important visual document from the ROCK N' ROLL era.
Did you notice the drummer losing his drumstick @ 4:23?

James Brown plays funk, it's a sound he and his group invented - rock and roll is white people playing jump blues
...Don't confuse the two
