haha this is cool. we learned about prepared piano in western civilization last year [it covers changes in music and art also.] but the prepared piano song we had to listen to was TERRIBLE. this is actually pretty nice. it's just a kinda crazy idea to put stuff in the piano... but the sound effects are really interesting.
if he would be the first to do this, it would be quite cool.. but this exists for about 60 years or so.. and the things he plays arent special at all. nice tune but nothing special.
He's very talented but I found it a little boring. If he had of given it a more alive beat it would have made it a lot better in my opinion. but i know music isn't easy to write...
I'm not really into 'experimental' music... just a regular R&B fan... but I think this guy is cool... Using only a simple tool, and he creates a whole new sound... Whoever think a piano could sound like a Japanese musical instrument?
there are a number of papers on physical modeling of the piano, and this would make an interesting twist, perhaps more forgiving too for a while: adding different virtual objects weighing down on the strings
not to be rude but yes. it is extreamely challenging what he is playing and those things he put in he probably thought up which give the peice a new and interesting sound.
Do You mean the musical piece? or do you mean his set up? or do you mean playing a piano? you're being quite vague. The sound doesn't pique my interests at all...
i don't really like the word 'cultured' but i guess to appreciate it you have to understand it in the context of musical experimentation. what he's doing is taking something that John Cage did and putting in a tonal setting, which is kind of cool if you are aware of it. As a stand alone piece of music, it has definite shortcomings. A lot of it is people just trying new things so that someone else can take the concept and do something really cool with it in some other way.
I think its fantastic. theres nothing new under the sun, but as a piano player, I find this pretty original. I'd definitely pay to see the performance.
Interesting sound like a player piano which were high strung upright soundboards were they a chorus type piano as well with the octaves on each note? but don't know if I would want to pay to see this? My seat is cheap here on youtube though....
A disgrace to every traditional piano player. I think I would get murdered for ever doing something like this. All in all, I love the sound and give the guy props for creativity!
i really like prepared piano - i was watching a documentary about the history of the harp they went right up to modern stuff and it featured a short duet of harp and prepared piano does anyone know if it was this guy who was featured in that program? it was on bbc i think - long shot but still
Isn't that the sort of way musical innovation comes? The first intentional electric guitar distortion was caused by stabbing a pencil in the middle of a speaker.
This is a good idea for use in PART of a song... but to base an entire piece off of it was... not good. I mean, it was clever in theory, but in practice it was actually sort of annoying.

Pretty Vannilla.
Whatever he put in there didn't change the sound to much.
The Idea for placing things like that in a piano isn't a new idea.
John Cage was doing it back in the day and when he did it it actully had effect on the sound.
