Mario's hate and blood lust were the cause of the pricess' death. He did not have to use the ax, Bowser was already trapped, he could have just taken the princess and left... With all the main players out of the picture this sets up a peaceful new beginning.

This is an excellent series. It had a good simple story, balanced situations, suspense, drama and the climatic battle. It was a story of heroism and sacrifice.

But the ending was totally unexpected :P

I loved it the whole way and I still can't stop laughing for the ending.

Now that Super Mario Bros. Wii has come out, I think that the music that starts at 1:03 could be replaced with the music Vs. Big Bowser. To find that music just look up "Vs. Big Bowser." A way you could try it is pause this video at 1:02 or 1:03, turn this vids volume down and start the Bowser music at 0:22 on that video. It works perfectly.

Essentially as Koopa and the princess are burning in the lava, each of their magic essences combine and react violently, causing the lava to start overflowing. I don't make that very clear though.
