Good tips. The key is: Practice. Every stock motorcycle on the road, no matter how big, should be able to make a 24 ft. U-turn. With enough practice you should be able to do it in less. 18 ft. is not unrealistic, but start out bigger. Find a clean parking lot and practice until the security people ask you to leave (don't ask me how I know about that).
Hey Crash, If the point is to be able to make a U turn on a standard US roadway, why do they test turning to the right? On the road you'd be riding on the right side and U turning to the left.
@RodMacPherson Honestly? I think it's because it's a bit of an "unnatural act". Most people seem more comfortable with lefts so going for a right makes is more difficult.
congratulations this is one of the most helpful and technically advanced videos 'Ive seen on uturns. Im glad you were using pov video style it does help.
I have been trying to perform these U-turns on my dads 1400cc Ninja and it is proving to be a little difficult as the bike is really heavy and powerful. And I don't know anyone who will be willing to lend me their bike. My question is: Should I give myself more than 24ft to complete the maneuver? I don't ride that bike on the streets, I am just preparing for whenever I get mine.
EXCELLENT videos!! I'm not riding yet (doing my riding and tests in Jan 2010) but using YouTube for advice vids. etc. This boy has some BRILLIANT advice on techniques etc. KEEP THEM COMING MY FRIEND!!
Great video, And some excellent tips there, I admit a weak area of my riding is doin the U turn, I can do it, But i am not 100% confident in it, Now watchin this video, I should practice more and more.
Great video, In Hong Kong we have to do a figure 8, on a walled slope, 4 times in a row, at a slope angle of 25 degrees. Looks sooooo scary when your just learning, but i passed my test, 2nd time, last year ;-)
You know, I've done that in tight stuff on dirt but don't feel any real benefit from it on the road...If you experiment with it and feel it makes a big difference let me know.
Hey, I love your videos...so helpful! Just wanted to say one little thing about the u-turns tho. For total beginners (like me who just finished a safety course), have had it ingrained in my head to never make a u-turn without stopping first and checking for vehicles. I just find I have to be really anal about alot of stuff right now because I always have a bunch of crap going thru my head that isn't yet just natural reflex.
The Alt-most test calls for right handed U-turns. However, in the US, we drive on the right side of the street, and nearly all U-turns as performed out there, are left turns, from the right shoulder, around into the new direction of travel.
Kinda wonder why they don't test for the U-turn we're actually likely to make..
Very helpful tips. Nice voice over work too. Makes the video easy to watch.

Yes, they are sold now as AXO Constructors. I had a special Supermoto sole put on them. Like 'em. (You can get them in brown now too...)

24ft would be the standard you would be judged at for licensing. I'd shoot for 24.

I have a question. Does rising off your seat to disconnect you from the bikes CoG (Center of Gravity) help in slow speed u-turns any?

That's a good point! If you're gonna make a u-turn on any kind of road with traffic--BE VERY VERY careful.

Brings up an interesting point.

Remember when, if they thought you might be impaired, Cops wanted you to say the alphabet backwards? Who the heck can do that sober--let alone drunk?
I think the belief is: If it ain't difficult, it ain't a test.
