havin a weapon is onething and for what is it used is another thing....possesing a weapon does not necessarily make someone a killer and in this same program u can c that in shaloin temples they do not use real weapons,they use normal household objects as weapons
@TheMartialartsJedi True. Shaolin Kung fu is more of an art. It basically involves mimicking animals. And everyone can invent their own styles in it. But the martial art itself is not their own. As I had mentioned earlier , Bodhidharma's teachings ended at the idea of throwing punches from the hip, and the idea of using meditation to supplement martial arts training. All other unarmed forms, the Chinese developed themselves.
@TheMartialartsJedi However the Shaolin style of wushu is regarded as amongst the first institutionalized Chinese martial arts. The oldest evidence of Shaolin participation in combat is a stele from 728 CE that attests to two occasions: a defense of the Shaolin Monastery from bandits around 610 CE, and their subsequent role in the defeat of Wang Shichong at the Battle of Hulao in 621 CE.
@TheMartialartsJedi One of his main opponents was Chi You who was credited as the creator of jiao di, a forerunner to the modern art of Chinese Wrestling.
@TheMartialartsJedi Yes you are right when you say Shaolin didnt make the art on their own. According to legend, Chinese martial arts originated during the semi-mythical Xia Dynasty more than 4,000 years ago. It is said the Yellow Emperor Huangdi (legendary date of ascension 2698 BCE) introduced the earliest fighting systems to China. The Yellow Emperor is described as a famous general who, before becoming China’s leader, wrote lengthy treatises on medicine, astrology and the martial arts.
@TheMartialartsJedi The idea of throwing punches from the hip, and the idea of using meditation to supplement martial arts training, but what he taught ended there. All other unarmed forms, the Chinese developed themselves.
@TheMartialartsJedi There is no denying that Boddhidarma pointed out the importance of martial arts training even for pacifist monks, as that was the reality and cruelty of the world. However, he by himself did not bring all of the unarmed forms as some people believe it WAS from him however, that Shaolin Kung Fu and other arts thereafter, got the horse stance.
@TheMartialartsJedi So the answer is both yes, and no. Boddhidarma got them started in it, but the martial arts he taught were largely weapons routines, few of which survive today. And, if you look at Kung Fu routines, and Indian martial arts routines they are completely and totally different. Martial arts are just like people's genetics; you look like your mother or father, because you carry their genes. Okinawan Karate looks like Fujian Crane style, because Karate carries Fujian Crane style
@TheMartialartsJedi Because, largely out of habit, they still practiced with their weapons to pass the time, because they were forbidden by Buddhism to use those weapons, weapons forms were thus adapted for use with the fists, rather than with swords or spears. Indeed if you look at Karate, it is basically fencing with a straight sword, but with fists. Combining modified combat that went from armed to unarmed, with the exercises Boddhidarma showed them, Shaolin Kung Fu was born.
@TheMartialartsJedi Boddhidarma only taught weapons routines, and several Yoga exercises. The true origin of unarmed fighting comes from war veterans who, seeking refuge from post traumatic stress disorder, went to the Shaolin temple to "purify their soul." They did not call it that back then, nevertheless, soldiers of old knew about the nightmares, and the trauma of war, and because they did not have therapists back then, they had the Buddhist temples and monasteries instead.
@TheMartialartsJedi The Shaolin temple holds that Boddhidarma, a southern Indian monk whose home was close to TANJORE KALLAR ANND TAMILLL NADU, was the one who taught the Chinese Buddhists at the Shaolin temple martial arts. However, the unarmed forms of Indian martial arts, and Chinese, are totally different. Here's why;
Kung Fu is not the oldest martial art, to be honest Shaolin monks who came to India ... learnt the oldest and most lethal martial art called Kalaripayattu to keep themselves fit since shaolin monks lacked excercise in those days. The monks went back to Shaolin and adapted the martial art to suit their needs ...... Hence Kung Fu was born .......
Kalaripayatty is the oldest known martial art and in the hands of a true master, kalari is unbeatable ...... This is a documented fact ......
@TheMartialartsJedi The Mongolian/Turkish composite bows were both feats of engineering and beautiful pieces of art. to be able to successfully shoot at distances of 500+ meters in a time before gun powder is truly amazing to me. it makes me almost sick to see how the beauty elegance and skill involved in archery has degraded down to a street thug holding his firearm at a ridiculous sideways angle.
@TheMartialartsJedi ahhh, how true, how true. i share the same philosophy on guns as you, the world would be better off without them. however, i can also understand why some people need them. you don't even have to shoot a gun to frighten a would be assailant, which is something extremely beneficial, to settle an altercation without violence. (provided the gun was not shot) however, i may be biased towards ranged weapons, considering one of my favourite weapons of all time is a ranged weapon...
@TheMartialartsJedi the shaolin monks were also some of the only people to take the time necessary to use flexible weapons, which could be extremely deadly. The hook swords, to name one example. great for disarming, but also had extremely sharp edges.
dont get me wrong, i hate the word 'killers' used in conjunction with kung fu as well, i just wanted to point out that although pacifists at heart the Shaolin Monks had some deadly tools.
@frostcle And besides, most Kung Fu schools teach multiple styles of martial arts. While many people would think that Wushu is a single style, it is a plethora of techniques, taolu, styles, branches of styles....
@frostcle True, if it cannot kill, it is not a weapon. But weapon forms are also forms of art and self-development. Learning the Jian, for example, will educate you to be more refined and elegant not only in movement, but in general behaviour as well.
