I find that bringing the hook point up closer gives me more hook exposure & more hookups. I don't mind sacrificing a cheap lure or two to find where the snags are.
He's not using the correct hook, prob one of the best hooks to use is a Gamagatsu with the right choice of size. The Gamagatsu has a paticular bend in it that rests the tip of the hook firmly against the top of the shad, or in the case of most bass anglers would be the fluke. The hook he is using is prob ok for open water. Good instructional video though.
You can also kill the weakfish with that type of shad! Also, if you fish saltwater and want a great bait fish trap, check out the You Tube video for the Collapse-A-Trap. I haven't paid for bait in 3 years and the thing fits in your tackle box too.
new haven harbor is a great place to fish. I used to flyfish for striper up there... i fish jersey and delaware these days. This will certainly work- ive caught several fish there in the past on a similar setup with "saltwater assassins". I would rig these plastics with a carolina rig, as if fishing for largemounths... God luck
Just strike as you normally would. The point is already outside the rubber body. If the fish strikes hard enough and you have a sharp enough hook it usually hooks itself.
i live right behind a river in riverside CT thats full of stripers and bluefish right know they're spawning. would that be a good choice of lure? i know i should use a steel leader in case a "blue" was to strike. from: Jeremy also should a jig it, swim it, or jerk it. thanks
You could fish off a dock. As to weight, depend on the size of the outfit you're using and the size of the rubber lure. A larger heavier rubber can definately be cast well on a lighter out fit. But on a heavier out fit or if you need more distance you're going to have to use some weight like a jig head.
Could you tell me how you would fish a big 7inch Fin-s if rigged on a jighead. Not sure whether the best bet would be the gently swim it, or to hop it. I plan to fish in the surf
You can cast with it but it's probably better to use it in a more quiet back-bay or inlet setting as it isn't weighted. You also have to retrieve it or at least work it against a current. Can't just let it sit.
How would you retrieve it to fish for largemouth? Its fall where I live, and the bass are coming up to the shallow rocky flats to take shad, perch, etc. and I was wondering how I would retrieve one of these. Would I sit it in one place and lift it and jerk like a senko worm, or would I reel it like a crankbait? Thanks for the help.
looks like a 6/0 or 8/0 lol, i use 4/0 for big largemouth bass (on zoom flukes freshwater). This fluke like plastic is huge lol maybe 1.5x bigger than what i use
Great clip.. Remem guys stripers luv fast, texas rig that thing & up your overall speed get more cast in the same time these fish dont work like large mouth
What I've always done, (for largemouth or smallmouth bass) is to take it like he is, but don't let the hook show, keep it inside of the lure. This will make it much easier to navigate through the vegetation or lillypads, thus giving you a much more entertaining fishing trip. I have caught a 7 pount 23 inch bass. Not bad for a 9 year old huh?
That's not Texas rigged. To Texas rig it, you do exactly the same as in the video, but the last push-through in the tail, you only push till the point of the hook 'just' breaks the outer surface of the lure. You do a Texas rig with a normal curved-gap hook, not a flattened-bite worm hook like in the video.
Used this last nite, and almost had a monster largemouth, but my dang line snapped!! Ughh

would a 5" swimming shad in current be better on a jighead or texas rigged?

what size hook you use on it though
559kingsucker 1 year ago
On a shad that big you need a big hook like 6/0 thru 8/0.

WOW and no weed on the hook! I'm so tired of the weed... THANKS A LOT!
gonna try it tomorrow...

very good explanation ;)

kinda like a texas rig
BrewCityLove 2 years ago
Similar, execpt Texas rigging usually leaves the hook point inside the rubber to keep it snag-less.

We caught a couple Striper on a 1oz lead head with a 5 in fish trap swim bait; I like that rig you showed/ Im gonna try it.

i live in Connecticut and i fish in the new haven harbor , would this work at night ?
boxinglife123 2 years ago
Of course but you might want to use a dark color at night instead.

how do u hook a fish like that when it bites. do u just yank it up?

can i use this lure to catch large mouth bass or pecock bass in south glorida?

Don't see why this or a similar style of rubber wouldn't work. Depends on the conditions.
artsnflies 2 years ago
I don't see why not.

is it the same with live herring?

on a scale 1- 10 how good you think this jig is?

You can ask that of any lure. It's choosing the right tool for the right job.

hey im new to saltwater fishing and i was wondering, culd i fish this rig from the beach and what time of year shuld i use this rig?
bonjovirox4ever 2 years ago
Yes but as shown it's unweighted to it will be tough to cast into the open surf. Better to rig it on a jig head instead.
artsnflies 2 years ago
I am a beginner. can i use this specific setup for fishing from a dock? is this enough weight or would i have to add some? thanks

Try different approaches. See what the fish want that day/night. At night you'll probably want a slower steady retrieve but that isn't in stone.
artsnflies 3 years ago
can i use this lure for surfcasting? like, just leave it out there and have a light drag setting..
bigburpboy 3 years ago
You can cast with it but it's probably better to use it in a more quiet back-bay or inlet setting as it isn't weighted. You also have to retrieve it or at least work it against a current. Can't just let it sit.

jrlalc 3 years ago
This specific lure was intended for striped bass. You'd probably use one a bit smaller for LMBs and retreive it with a steady or stop/start retrieve.

now how do you fish them for striper? ive heard you can use the hooks like those that are weighted on the bend too
SCfisherman91 3 years ago
The guide told me you fish them in with a rapid twitch retrieve. He said he does well like that in the CT river.

to bad theres no gap for the fish to be caught u got to go through the plastic
flyfisherman321 3 years ago
The fish will chomp on the bait, squishing it down and exposing more of the hook.
abanyai123 3 years ago
It's a soft plastic. The point is exposed on the top.
