U. S. Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the president. Under Alberto Gonzalez, the DOJ pleased our president but not the Democrat congress.

You forgot to add that they can NOT be fired for political reasons, whether they serve at the pleasure of the president or not. You cannot fire U.S. Attorneys for investigating their own party in wrong doings. Which is what they did. That is very dangerious. That would leave every party in power with immunity.

There is no statute that says this, just the general principle that the judicial and executive branches should be independent. DOJ is part of the executive, although it has some staff that carries over between administrations.
