  • no idea why they remade brideshead when anthony andrews just IS sebastian flyte. he is absolutely heart shattering on that stairs and charles is a man without the tools to help the man he loves.

  • Does anyone know what the piece of classical music is at the end of this clip, when people are going to chapel?

  • Bless his sweet heart. What a sad love they had.

  • This is probably an inapproproate statement for the dourness of the clip but my god what attractive men they are and so talented

  • When I first so this I was 12 years old and I love this so much that every time it came on I watched it, now it is over 30 years later and I think I love it even more because there is so much I did not understand watching this as a child.

Thank You so much for uploading this, I know I will never watch the movie. I can not help but think they change the meaning of this version, and the book to make a Hollywood movie that has nothing to with the story. I hope you know what I mean.

  • Thank you for uploading this version of "Brideshead"! It is my favourite book, and it literally pained me when, a few years ago, a film version came out which shattered every picture of Waugh's masterpiece that I'd had in my mind. Now, here this old thing is, and it's marvellous. Such a shame that actors like these, like tigers, are disappearing these days.

  • Christianity has been such a problem for White people.

Perhaps it would be better if we rediscovered our Pagan (Greco-Roman or Germanic) roots.

  • I cried here at Sebastian's pain and suffering.. it's so moving how he portrays the character

  • I can't see even the most remote resemblance to 'Hanson & Weasley' either. In any event, the original series would be very hard to beat - with Jeremy Irons & Anthony Andrews playing Charles and Sebastian. The film version isn't a patch on the original TV series (Isn't that almost always the case?). For me it's ET IN ARCADIA EGO!

  • Sebastian knew that he was wrong to behave badly towards Charles but his suspicions of his family overcame him and he thinks Charles is one of them now. Charles never would have asked for an apology but Sebastian does it anyway because he realizes even in his suspicion that Charles is his only true friend and didn't deserve his scorn.

It's one of my favorite moments in acting, Anthony and Jeremy are par excellence.

  • 3:00 - Cordelia. So innocent. ): <3

The entire cast is at the top of their game here. Usually in film or TV one is just made vaguely aware of the emotions the characters are experiencing; in this series, especially this scene in particular, you feel everything raw and hard as they do.

gosh, could 'Brideshead Revisited' be /any/ more spectacular?

  • the reason actors act. nuff said.

  • (2:24 )Sebastian was about to wear Bridy's ass out! (a.k.a beat him up)

  • Thanks so much for posting. This is such an excellent scene. Simply the best program ever on television.

  • Poor Sebastian I cry when I watch this he is such a good actor

  • 1:48

  • If you've lived with someone with an addiction, you'll agree that Sebastian's slapping of the photo at 2:39 is very believable.

When he "falls to pieces" on the stairs at 3:40, he gives the most believable portrayal of a man crying I've EVER seen. The first time I saw this scene, I sat on my sofa, trembled, and cried with him. Vulnerability is humbling. As a man, I know how it feels to cry that way: sobbing, gasping, humiliated, struggling to hide my pain because of my male ego. Whew!

  • Sebastian is never clearly homosexual in our modern way of understanding it. Yet this scene rings more true to me--as a modern gay man--than anything in Brokeback Mountain.

  • it was not possible during the time when Waugh published the novel or when this film debuted that homosexuality was openly displayed. Strong connatations and insinuations were the only legal way of getting away with declaring it without declaring it. It wasn't until Jacqueline Susann and Gore Vidal were people able to write openly about homosexuality. And even these authors suffered public stigma for it.

  • I agree, it looks more genuine. brokeback mountain is not very convincing in terms of the cowboys relationship when compared with many other movies. these guys arent kissing but their chemistry and intimacy transpires in other ways. and thats what maters, the sex aspect is secondary even if they are gay who cares? very good actors.

  • @selfidentity1 strange. That's exactly what I thinking about Brokeback Mountain.

  • @beardo373 apples and oranges

  • But what does "I was bloody to him" mean?

Sorry,I'm italian and I don't know english very well.

    Thanks. Very sad scene =(

  • significa, "l'ho trattato malissimo"

  • Grazie! :D

  • it doesn't really mean anything, but it roughly translates as: "i was awful to him" ... basically, a mix of: bad, horrible, unappreciative. "bloody" is used as more of a soft swear word nowadays, though, e.g. "that was bloody hard!"

  • Thanks a lot! :D

  • The very best ever tv programme i have ever seen, nothing can touch Brideshead Revisited.

  • so utterly painful, and beautiful

  • some day, if i have a week or so to spare, i'd like to just sit down and read the book and watch the miniseries in its entirety.

  • I am obsessed with this video....I have watched it probably 50 times but I still cannot understand what Sebastian is saying at 4.30. Can someone help me on this??

  • "I knew it would happen if I let you meet them"

  • Ah! Thank you! I thought the "meet them" was there but could not get the rest of it. Thank you so much for response!

  • Brideshead Revisited is, and always will be, a work of art, no matter what media your experience it in.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. It's, for me, one of the best acted scenes in the entire show. Anthony Andrews pulls off Sebastien beautifully, you just feel for him. And I agree with plibby, that smile is just heartbreaking. Wonderful series, they shouldn't have spolied it by trying to cram the story into a movie. Now people will have that image instead of this when they think of BHR. What a travesty.

  • The little smile at 1:50 always brakes my heart. I just want to give Sebastian a hug!

  • It's so heartbreaking...you can feel the pain in Sebastian's heart and down to his core, his thinking that the only one who loves him now cares more about the family, and that they in return accept Charles more. The emotion AA exudes, the cross between his love for Charles and the betrayal he feels, is palpable. Gut-wrenching. I cry nearly every time.

  • I think Jeremy Irons is very good in this scene as well. Registering Charles' despair in such an understated but palpable way couldn't have been easy but his helples but his discomofort, his helplesness and his heartbreak are some of the most poignant emotions in this scene. Charles is an awfully tough role to pull off.

  • If they ever try to remake "Brideshead Revisted", then whoever has the task of following Anthony Andrews performance of a man descending into chronic alcoholism is in for a very tough time. AA was distressingly brilliant & it is impossible to imagine any other actor pulling off the role so incredibly well.

  • I hear there is a remake in the pipeline. Don't know how they are going to out-do the original Brideshead, with such great performances as these.

  • Nor do I, but if you are correct I shall certainly watch with interest. Brilliant though AA was, i think Nicholas Grace playing the raving intellectual pufter Anthony Blanche was even better. Topping AA almost impossible, topping NG impossible!.

  • I've always loved this scene. Beatifully acted. Sebastian's sadness is heartbreaking. Very moving.

  • I almost can't bear this scene. Anthony is incredible.

  • ...er. I'm having a difficult time imagining a cross between Zac Hanson and Ron Weasley, but in my head it looks hideous. Are you sure about that?

  • Ha-ha. It's indeed hideous if they were to cross-breed..but they aren't animals...Ha-ha. What I meant was there are certain features of Sebastien's face that reminds me of Zac Hanson and the reddish circle around Seb's eye reminds me of Ron Weasley.

  • @kidbitch84 I'm with motherofpearl13 all the way - 100%. Can't even imagine what horrible mix that combination would produce.....and, I don't think I want to either.

  • Anybody know what it was Sebastian was "bloody" to Charles about??

  • Before this scene Charles had been upstairs with Sebastian, trying to stop him from drinking, and Sebastian says (I'm quoting from the book here) "Oh, mind your own business. You came here as my friend; now you're spying on me for my mother, I know. Well, you can get out, and tell her from me that I'll choose my friends and she her spies in future."

  • Does anyone know of any sites or sources where they would discuss the philosophy behind the novel "Brideshead Revisited"? I have been assigned to read the book for my Lit class and need some help.

  • I love Phoebe Nichols as Cordelia in this series, too. One of the most breathtakingly beautiful things ever put on film, the movie version will have to be superb to even match this.

  • Looks like Charles gives Lady Marchmain the finger around 24 seconds-this is such a great series. The music is absolutely enchanting.

  • I detect Lady Marchmain's voice cracking only so slightly as she continues to read, but her English demeanor prevents her from becoming emotional. Not so for Sebastian.

  • She's sober, he's drunk, hence the stiff upper lip and the sobbing.

  • I'm so glad to see this well-acted scene from Brideshead. Thanks for posting. Anthony Andrews gave a heart-wrenching performance. The viewer seems so helpless while wanting to stave off Sebastian's decline!
