Ofcoz they lost the battle. In strange city, surrounded by profi-militia men, low on ammo and fighting morality they did their best. And nobody came to help them. Somehow they captured the parlament building and destroyed it later. Some could get out by night, in small groups, some could build their defence position in railway station and restore control of a small perimeter. But all those things were useless, so most of them got killed, some very brutal (head cuttoffs and so on)

It´s terrible that a fantastic force during soviet times had a ridiculous performance in First Chechen War, with roughly 14.000 fatal casualties ( by Memorial) . It show as Yeltsin's years were a disaster for Russia Federation. Dramatic cuts in investiments in defence, social chaos and total disorder caused this drama. Sad.
