My neigbour is Indian, of the "Rajput" caste, from North West India. Thirty years ago, when he was 17, he & a Roma girl from Hungary were very much in love.

well , im romanian , not rromani. there is a confusion that harms our country. romanians are related to some old tribes of europe and we speak a latin derived language. rroma/rromani known as gypsy or tzigani are nomads of india (probably) that arrived here a long time ago , too.
it resembles the situation of the black people in the usa. the gypsy/roma were slaves here a couple of hundred years. the were liberated in the early 19 century (im not sure when). slavery is wrong , of course.

Very true. Some ppl probably don't know the difference between Romanians and the Romani. You guys have the ancient Thracian/Dacian history and dealing w/invasions from the central asians too. The huns, especially, seemed to invade & mix heavily in the Balkan areas. Also, the Bulgars & Avars. You have some of the most interesting Euro history. Plus you guys have Transylvania. Given ppl's current obsession over vampires, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't get a ton of tourists.

I believe we were "liberated" in the latter half of the 19th Century. Because of increased mechanisation, the price of Gypsies/slaves dropped dramatically, to the point that a Gypsy represented a negative value. And so they were "thrown away"; and such throwing away was dressed with words like "liberation", "emancipation" and "abolition of slavery".

The point of the story is that the ancestors of the Roma did indeed live settled lives in North Western India for thousands of years, in a society that was the wealthiest and most civilized in the world. Tracing the Romani ancestry back deeper into the past finds them in Europe itself, probably Central Europe. So please don't anyone tell the Roma "Go back to India." Because Europe is just as much home to them. The language of the Roma is firmly Indo-European, a clear indication that their original ancestors were European.
But you know what else? The language of the Northern Indians is ALSO Indo-European; and THEIR ancestors ALSO came from Europe. I guess the Indians of the Dravidian South have a right to say to the North Indians: "Go back to Europe!"

I can only guess what the agenda is for making Gypsy Folk appear "stone aged", but I'm aware that Gypsies in Europe today are regarded by the authorities as an expense. Extermination is not viable, so state sponsored harassment + violence is applied to encourage them to emigrate, or to suicide, which many are doing.

Banjara were never mistaken as being Egyptian so they were never called "Gypsy" and they certainly aren't "Gypsy" now. Thats like calling Roms "Banjara" instead of Roms.

only 3 words? About 80% of the language would be closer. Roms are not proven to decend from Banjara though Banjara may have contributed amongst the ranks of the Roms. Banjara definetely are not Gypsy as Gypsy is short for Egyptian. Roms were mistaken to be Egyptian by Europeans due to thier brown eastern appearence. We are not Egyptian though.
