I'm Ukrainian Catholic in Pittsburgh, St. John's. This is the first time I've heard this song close to how I know it. I'm still having a VERY hard time with this. I can't speak Ukrainian, but I can speak the entire liturgy how Baba taught me. Nobody else can there, and it's not the same as when I was a kid. Everyone who was old and cool passed away. I'm only 32, and I hate change.
@ReaderWilliamM11 That is correct. Ukrainian Catholics, who generally are from the Western part of Ukraine, that was controlled by Poland and then by Austria, are part of a sui juris church (Byzantine Rite) that is in communion with the Apostolic See at Rome.
We try to build unity among christians but how is it possible when such attitude persists. No matter the rituals, we are the children of the same God and share the same faith!
Easter Catholic does not exist! It is a Orthodox service. Uniates (eastern catholics) use Orthodox rites in order to convert Orthodox people into Roman Catholicism. After several failures of the Romans to impose Roman Catholicism, they had the idea to crate the Uniatism, an Orthodox Bishop, who was bought from Rome betrayed the Holy Church in order to serve Rome and persecute his people, killing children, burning and stealing churches, the name of this monster is Jozafat
"For Christ, being raised from the dead, is become the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. To Him be Glory and dominion unto ages of ages. (St. John Chrysostom Paschal Sermon).
This is Orthodox..it's their tradition. In the Old Country..the family lowered the casket..and threw in the "dirt"..
We still do it today here in the USA.
I am not familiar with Ukranian Catholic..but I am with Ukranian Orthodox..it's an "offshoot" of a sense of the Orthodox Christian faith/sect..Russian and Greek Orthodox Christians. Guess..I'm uninformed as to this particular person. God Rest His Soul..
What religion is this? When My Mother in law passed away last year. They didn't have it where we were still there when she was going into the ground! touching!!
This is Ukrainian Catholic. They did not place his body fully in the ground while the people were still around. Although I went to a Nuns funeral and their custom and tradition is that they are to be buried by the nuns while the people are still present
This must have been a very religous person by all the priest present, may he live a long life in heaven, I do not understand the Orhodox faith but know they are similar to Anglican and Roman Catholic. Know this person is in heaven.
I think she was referring to the rituals and traditionalism of the service which is often beautiful and very moving. I don't believe she was mocking the decedent in any way.
Actually, in my church, we sing that song exactly the same way, but at easter... not at funerals. At funerals we sing (sorry for the spelling) Vitchnaya Pamyat.
u are gonna be goin to hell for sayin such a hateful thing. if u dont kno who dis is then u need to mind ur own bussiness! their was not no need to say dat.
you do kno tht this is not aaliyah's funeral... if ya actually read the more info you'd no its for late †Bishop Basil Filevich Ukrainian Bishop of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan ...
its becouse some Family memebers do not like Big dirty men lowering a 500+ pound casket into the earth becouse if u search "funeral gos bad" u will see why
Obviously, none of those who posted negative comments had any idea of what they were doing. SHAME on all of you. What is being sung is "Christ is risen from the dead, conquering death by death, and to those in the tombs giving life." You have all spoken against and defamed our Lord Jesus Christ. All have forgotten or never knew the following: "Love one another, just as I have loved you." (John 13:34)

It looks as if the funeral was during the Paschal period where you would sing Khristos Voskrese instead of Vechnaya Pamyat.
