It's true. They do drop red apples. I have been playing on my friends server for a while now and making my own tree farm and just a moment ago one of the trees dropped a red apple. I honestly thought it was a glitch or something in the game because I had never heard of that before...

@MrSN99 Download a program called NBTedit. Use that to open the Level.dat file. The Game type for survival is 0 and creative is 1. change the value and click save., then open Minecraft.

Everybody, Notch didn't stop developing Minecraft. He is currently taking a "gaming vacation" as how he called it on Twitter and Jens is now temporarely the main developer of Minecraft untill January. He is also working on a game at the moment for the Ludum Dare-contest, so that's why he "stopped developing" Minecraft.

And I was amazed of the random Apple drops when I found one :D I was like "OMFG an Apple!" and now I know it is a "secret tweak" :P

only problem? mobs jump half the time... so crops aren't protected from mobs, just you. So not OP. IMO
