I think the people who make a fuss about the seal hunt and how cruel it is are just laughable. It is regulated hunting of a wild animal. Come back and complain to me when the dozens of atrocious things being done in other animal related industries have been addressed:
- British fox hunting
- puppy mills that breed inbred dogs and keep them starved and immobile
- any form of slaughter houses
- any form of farm breeding animals for the use of their pelts (seal hunt is done in the wild at least)
I think the efficiency of killing in this case is very relevant due to the fact that many opponents of the seal hunt use the fact that clubbing seals is seen as brutal to support their arguments.
The fact is that due to the constant publicity the Canadian seal hunt receives, it is a highly regulated industry. The amount of animals hunted and the methods used for hunting are constantly being disused and are monitored to a much larger extent than most other animal related industries

@williwo One of the MAIN REASONS why John ended up as a Peace Activist was that he'd been violent earlier (and he only hit Cynthia once, before they got married) and he put his whole career on hold to raise the son he COULD raise. He had no chance of staying home with Julian, as Julian was born in 1963 (when the Beatlemania first began) and John was in way over his head with the Beatles.

I don't understand why hunting an animal that is designated as "least concern" in terms of endangerment, while making a living, and not condoning inhumane behaviour is wrong. The seal hunt is lawful. Animals are exactly here for humans to eat--it's in the bible--God gave man dominion over animals. Animals helped to plow fields to provide food, to aid in hunting and travel. Some cats were used in hunting in older times and the Egyptians used cats as guards. Then you also have cats helping a household to rid mice and other pests. Before dogs were so overly cross-bred, most were used for hunting or herding purposes, or to pull sleds, after being cross-bred with wolves.

What people have to realize is that Greenpeace will tell you whatever will get your support. No one in Newfoundland clubs seals. It would spoil the fur, take too long and further risk the life of the hunter. Think of it this way. Greenpeace is a business. They rely on the dollars of the idiots with lots of money and no sense. Here's where I agree with you. I don't agree with subsidizing any industry. If it can't stand on it's own two feet, let it fail. That includes corn, which is in just about everything now and causing a diabetes epidemic as a result. Subsidies are bad, no matter how you slice it.

the majority of people against sealing are vegan/vegetarian, and therefore are in defense of all animals. the worth of a seal pelt drops every year (down -$80 in just a year), we are winning. communities, that are unsustainable and participate in barbaric slaughter will cease to exist unless they change their ways. there is no science to support the culling of seals to sustain the environment.

Personally, I don't eat seal, I don't wear fur, and have no desire to. Nonetheless, I have no problem with the seal hunt. I find it strange that you don't have (as much of) a problem with the slaughter of cows and pigs. I suppose they're not as cute as seals.

At least the McCartney's just stuck to having a few photo ops. Worse are the animal rights activists who actively interfere with the hunting boats putting the lives of people taking part in a legal practice in danger.
I simply do not have the patience for groups, such as PETA, who feel it is fair to make direct comparisons between humans and animals. I feel it is clear humans are on a different level than animals. Sorry, but a 1 month old seal and child do not equal the same thing.

I think the people who make a fuss about the seal hunt and how cruel it is are just laughable. It is regulated hunting of a wild animal. Come back and complain to me when the dozens of atrocious things being done in other animal related industries have been addressed:
- British fox hunting
- puppy mills that breed inbred dogs and keep them starved and immobile
- any form of slaughter houses
- any form of farm breeding animals for the use of their pelts (seal hunt is done in the wild at least)

I think the efficiency of killing in this case is very relevant due to the fact that many opponents of the seal hunt use the fact that clubbing seals is seen as brutal to support their arguments.
The fact is that due to the constant publicity the Canadian seal hunt receives, it is a highly regulated industry. The amount of animals hunted and the methods used for hunting are constantly being disused and are monitored to a much larger extent than most other animal related industries
