The paper money has worth because of the work you do. Rather, it is your tangible proof that you have done work and are thus owed work by somebody else. They do work for you, they are owed, etc etc etc etc etc. Gold has many uses in chemistry, and is very conductive (just some of it's uses), so it has worth in and of itself. Usually, it must be found, and finding it takes a lot of work(see above (at least these days)).
