I always got depressed at the end because they would say they weren't real.

Also, at the time I didn't know where in the world I lived so I as a kid I wanted to travel to North America just to see if they were wrong and they did existed (even though I was already living in North America).

That's the beauty of the commercial, it uses the media language of a nature documentary to make the house hippo seem genuine, the same thing that we experience everyday in the mass media. It's easy to trick people, that's for sure.
