The real greats of this beautiful game are the players that make it look like the easiest thing in the world. Novak and Rafa are not among those players!!!
@Threepwoot Hence the video is called "The Safin Show." Federermagic did several videos to pay a tribute to Safin, right after he retired at the end of 2009. If you want Federer's points, look to the right hand side, where you will find Federer's highlights (or mostly his).
IMO, he and nalbandian are the greatest 'what if' stories of the past decade, two great players that never fully managed to exploit all of their talents due to various injuries, a real shame, if you ask me
What's so amazing is that, Safin won't be remembered as much for his achievements, but he will always be remembered as one of the greatest entertainers of the game of all time. Hey...that's good enough for me man.
@BrotherTree1 Yeah, it's crazy. The guy won 2 slams, 2 davis cups, 5 masters series events, been ranked #1 for 9 weeks, made it to at least the semis in all four slams, player of the year award in 2000. I guess it's a bit like Mcenroe, the temper overshadowed some of his results, but people will always remember the results, for both Mcenroe AND Safin. Safin played some of the best tennis ever when he was in full flight. Beating Federer and Sampras to win two slams is pretty huge!!
@davd1986 Yep. Still, like you said, it's been a fantastic career overall. But I really felt that he could do WAY better than 15 career titles :'(, that was the sad part.
@BrotherTree1 Agreed! I am glad that there are some reasonable discussions to be had in some of these tennis videos. Some people are honest, coherent and respectful of players and fans, others on the other hand, not so much, lol. If at all possible, try avoiding 'Killuminati1996,' the guy is an annoying troll as I've ever seen one on YouTube.
@davd1986 Yes, it is a bit bizzare to say a guy who had accomplished all that- "underachieved". Many will make it to Tennis Hall of Fame will lesser credentials, but
that's a testament to his talent- or at least what people thought of it. Personally, I think he was at a disadvantage as he had to beat two people in every match: namely himself and the other guy.
Safin's coach said that if his sister had 10% of safin's talent, she would've been number 1 for 10 years and if safin had 10% of safina's hard work, he would've been number 1 for ten years
@thelufactor Though-provoking and blithely amusing but this anecdotal remark is paradoxical as talent is really a derivative of hard work, thus implying that Safin put in the miles (or work) to get himself near the top, but didn't actually act like it. His behavior betrays this fact and mentally, as everyone knows, something was missing. Keep in mind his sister Safina was No.1 and had plenty of "talent"- just calling it like it is.
despite what ppl say, I think Safin's two handed backhand is a very aesthetic beautiful shot. Its such a pure shot. He hits it so cleanly, with such precision and such power. and he can create acute angles with it. Safin's tennis combines power and grace
If he was mentally as strong as federer,he would have been up there with federer as the greatest players ever, but he just loved a good time and didnt worry about history. As george bush once said,in history we will all be dead................but safin was the perfect tennis player when he put his mind into it.
Most people I speak to don't think that the two handed backhand is the most aesthetically pleasing shot in the game, yet all those people believe that Safin's backhand is one of the prettiest shots in the game. It's just a technically perfect backhand, just like prime Federer's forehand, who I'd take over anybody's in the game.
His BH is ridiculous, and technically probably a lot tougher to hit than any other BH, he's got so many combinations of straight arm, bent etc etc. IMO the best BH ever.
@Anaconda43VR Disagree completely. Safin has, technically, a very simple backhand with little complications, it's just very smooth all the way from the transaction of the back swing to the dip of the head to the follow through.
During his prime his forehand was also textbook, very simple with no extra clutter.
Ok, fair point. He had to change his forehand due to injury, which pretty much fucked his FH up. His forehand was always underrated, it wasn't as inconsistent as people made it out to be and generated easy power on that wing.
Man he should have done better than 2 slams, i know, i know he had injuries, but that guy had a very good serve, best BH, good forehand, good attacking return, excellent touch and volleys and in his better years moved great.
@Anaconda43VR I believe 2003 was a year he would have definitely won another slam but one of the reasons of why I like Marat is that I can relate to him and injuries are a huge part of that. I always thought Marat had the type of game to allow him to continue playing good tennis until his early 30's but it wasn't to be, his real career ended in 2005, he achieved a lot for a 25 year old and even had several injuries before then, so he done really well.
I just think if he stayed fit and focused, he could have achieved anything, indeed his career finished in 2005 where he shouldn't have continued........Although in years 2006 onwards, as much as he wasn't playing good tennis I still felt that he could have done something big (with Safin, anything is possible).
@Anaconda43VR fit and focused...hmmm, I don't really think those two words go together in this context and I don't believe he should have called it quits after 2005, that would have been ridiculous. You seem like a Safin admirer but that's one of these big myths (with Safin, anything is possible) I don't really know where some people got this from!
I mean, had Safin had an injury free career, and focused solely on tennis ala Nadal and Federer, the sky could have been the limit for him. Looking back, he was a shadow of himself in 06-09, which is natural.
The last part, well, Safin wasn't his old self from 06-09, and although he wasn't a contender for anything, I still felt that his game style allows him to get hot on any particular day. He did do very well at Wimbledon.
@Anaconda43VR I suppose, maybe I'm just being a bit harsh on you because when I do look back I think he could have done better during those years. Marat was rarely one for winning ugly. I think I'm being harsh on you because I do support Marat and commend him for his efforts in the 2008 off season, he really really worked hard on his fitness and was in very good shape within a short period, I'm as harsh a critic as any on him, but he worked as hard then as he had in his career.
AO 2002, I think that match hurts the most for any Safin fan, no disrespect to Johansson (who deserved it) but Safin really should be beating him in a slam final. Yeah Safin isn't a choker or a mental midget, he just does crazy things at bad moments, IMO he's shown in his career that when he's into it he's great - pretty much every match at AO04.
@Anaconda43VR Without any proof, I'd say that Marat had a rather pathetic attitude at times during the 2002 AO, seemed somewhat cocky at times, uncharacteristic of his usual self, let's just say that his other interests stopped him from going one step further in the tournament but the matches that I hated watching the most were his chokes last year in M1000 events, I felt really bad for him. I was going to upload highlights from Martin 04 AO but lost the disks, I really need to find them.
He stated his chokes happened because he started caring about winning more than ever, and got so nervous at the finishing line unlike 2000-2005 where he really didn't care as much as he did. Yeah just get cracking finding the disks :), every Marat match in AO04 was amazing except for the final.
@Anaconda43VR Pretty much. He said after the Monfils match in Montreal that he was too "desperate". And people say he dropped down the ranks etc. because he didn't care, what kind of talk is that? I guess Kuerten, Norman, Philippoussis, Ivanisevic and a tonne of other great players dropped down the ranks due to lack of caring too.
The 2004 AO was amazing to watch, after not seeing him for so long. He played multiple tournaments in 03 injured, so it was good to see him fresh.
@Anaconda43VR Not sure about more than ever, as he said he stopped working out but he said he was too "desperate" to win after losing to Monfils for the second time in 09 after Montreal.
@Anaconda43VR I was blown away by his performance against Baghdatis at the AO08, the first two sets were not good, then he was playing some really unbelievable tennis and showing some real mental strength, you could tell the guy wanted it badly and after the match I was left wondering what could have happened earlier in his career when he was in his prime showing this type of mental display eg. AO02 final. He did get hot within those two sets, but his mobility was still causing problems.
This video shows you just how much damage the knee injury did to Marat's career. It led to sloppy footwork, which led to elongated swings, which led to the demise of his forehand and diminished the amount of power he generated.
Safin is like a very inconsistent genius.... but he is a genius.
Who's better? Safin at his best or Nalbandian at his best? There's Safin's incredible win against Federer in AO 05, and then there's Nalbandian's incredible win against Federer in Shanghai Masters in 05.
I wouldn't say he's old school... I mean, he's THE symbol of modern tennis as it is now (or maybe I should say a year or two ago). In 2000, he was labeled as "the future of tennis" during his match against Sampras, who even thought Safin could be #1 for as long as he wanted. Now Delpo is the future of tennis. See a trend here? ;)
But you're right that he'll be missed. I missed him since he announced his retirement. He's such a great guy. He doesn't hold anything back! Such a real guy person.
Hi, i understand where you are coming from but i was refering to his temperament - smashing rackets, losing his temper, etc... i agree with you concerning Delpo; i just hope he doesn't suffer serious injuries similar to Mr Safin which virtually ended his career after 2005.
Not that hard, knowing that Federer is a one-handed backhand player, it is more difficult for a two-handed backhand player to do this shot but still hard in any case! I guess!
these 2 ones are the greatiest players ever!! but it's so pitty that one of them has won 14 grand slams, and the other - only two(( he has such fantastic shots!! just cant stop looking...
His 2-handed backhand is the most beautiful shot I've ever seen. It's the reason I started watching tennis. Marat's pretty beautiful, too, so I watch because of that also. :)
Safin, Agassi, Nalbandian, Hewiit, Roddick, Federer era was much more interesting to watch than rafa, djokovic, murray era...
