yeah £175 for 48K, those of us that had a spectrum had a 16K version. Then one kid in school came up with a scam. He went to WH Smith an unpeeled the 48K sticker of the back of a showroom model.
Since the spectrum had a well known fault with the port at the back WHS were well used to exchanging failed computers. Well, he put this sticker on his 16K machine and was given a 48K machine in exchange.
Within a few weeks we all had 48K Spectrums and were in anew world of games etc.
Poor old Jim Westwood - they've made him out to be this terrified shrinking violet with too much hair, jumping out of his skin every time Uncle Clive started fuming about something.....Bloody TV producers hehe And the portrayal of Sir Clive himself was an eye opener - still don't quite believe that.
That was the problem with the Acorn BBC, it was too expensive. £299 for 16k, £399 for 32k. Only the rich kids had them. Spectrum £125 for 16k, £175 for 48k. And the Spectrum had far more games for it.
@damedavid I suppose the Beeb was just too expensive to make it as a home computer - being more than twice the cost of the Spectrum made it totally uncompetitive for most households. Shame really, as it's actually a very good games machine - Elite of course, but also the likes of Revs, Exile, the Acornsoft arcade clones, etc.
When he says Jet set willy i think that was a cock up and they meant manic miner, giving that when he said that would have been late 1983 and JSW didnt come out til about mid 1984
