So your using the power of the sun to heat the oil,to heat the water, to run a turbine, to run a generator... each step just waisting that much more energy. need to be more simple to be efficient imo. Fantastic idea's though
actually no... you see the energy is not being converted in the transfer.. it remains as thermal energy all the way from the collector to the turbine... you should (I hope) realize that all your electricity is actually generated using a steam turbine.. even nuclear power is nothing more than a heat source to generate steam to drive a turbine.. in the method I advocate the use of oil allows for considerably higher temps to be captured and stored.. conventional solar power ....
@greenman023 which relys on water alone only permits heat to be captured to 100 degrees celcius and with only the quantity stored above 60 being useful... with oil storage you dont just get 40 degrees of useful heat,,, you get over FIVE HUNDRED.. POTENTIALLY 5000 DEGREES!!!!! THATS NOT A LOSS BUT A CONSIDERABLE GAIN!!!
NOTHING WROMG WITH MY MATHS NOR MY GRASP OF PHYSICS OR THERMAL DYNAMICS
and yes the all city acts as a giant valve that have the potencial to influence the wheather paterns becouse it draws water from the natural flow and changes the way energy is relased. currently doing some drawings and also letting the idea to mature , keep the good work.
for the past year i have being working in a floating city that uses the updraft field to provide air conditioner to the city itself by sucking the air and the heat of machines and individuals and to house coral reef in the submersed part, also i use an OTEC to give a heat sink in order to get water from condensation of the flow of the updraft, all begun with the idea of paradise being a simbiotic sincronized relation between nature and tecnology.
ALSO .. The original solar chimney can operate AT NIGHT, as the ground is heated and that heat is used at night.
The Green Tower people have designed enhancements to this effect that allows their tower to run at 89% at night, with about 6 DAYS reserve, no plumbing needed.
Also 2/3 of the greenhouse area is suitable for farming with about a 170% increase in crop output.
It could be done as a housing co-op, with about 3400 shareholders sharing the costs and profits. Who needs big investors?!
This is the first time that I have seen a Solar Chimney mis-represented as having the turbine at the top. That's just silly.
Go see Enviromission's website or green tower dot net both of those have the turbines at the base of the tower. Just like the 50kw proto type that worked very well.
and putting the turbine at the top whilst leading to practical problems is from an energy capture perspective the best place.. cos that's where, as a consequence of the pressure drop and relative temp difference of the heated air and ambient is greatest....... so you get more umph... just the difficulties of balancing a turbine ontop of a mile high chimney (my method negates that since it is not using updraft but heat...
thanks for the responce. in the illustration i dont see any cooling tower tht is used by curent thermal power stations to recover water from steam.
any way apart from this illustration,i hope we can take our discussion in positive direction. since im much interested cheap way for solar power. whats ur opinion about solar-updraft towers. do u think they can be made at small level...like 5-10kw. i'll be thankful for ur responce
hi ghayas81.... with respect you ma be reading to much detail into what is in essence a 'concept note'. the idea first came about after seeing the solar cookers used by the Brahma Kumaris of Mt Abu, Rajasthan.. using relatively simply and small tech the BK 's generate steam to use for cooking..and they can cook for 5000 (eat ya heart out JC.) !..it's adapted here to demonstrate how that concept could be adjusted to generate electicity, air con and heating..as well as being used to generate ...
local climatic conditions which, IF CORRECTLY INTEGRATED (!!!!) could be used to off set climate change.. it could prove particularly useful in areas such as the NW of Africa (Sahara) or Australia where incidently sea water could be used (thus negating the need to recapture). Similarly a floating barge or pontoon adaptation could be used in places like the med.. not for electricity generation but for vapor.. cloud generation and future precipitation in land.. in this context it's important to..
note; the video was designed to compliment the modeling system (DFM) that I have been working with for the last few years.. you can get a better idea of DFM from my google & scribd pages.

with respect to updraft towers I have little knowledge & whilst the idea has merit I feel that they lacked scope, take up too much room (height of tower & foot print).. similarly I don't believe they work on small scale, one needs a very tall chimney.
1st u talk about converting water to steam..and not recapturing the steam to water(as done by cooling tower). so it would consume enormous amount of water. from where that water would come, and if available most of the energy generated will be consumed in pumping that water.
2nd thing u proposed the heat>steam>energy conversion in basement..which is complex phenomenon requiring lots of maintainense with time
glad you like the illustrations.. in reply 2 comments... converting water to steam is how electricity is currently generated in existing fossil fuel & nuclear reactors.. what the video proposes is that super heated oil (from solar radiation) rather fossil fuel or enrich uranium is used to generate the steam.. as regards placing the plant in the basement.. its purely an arrangement for the video.. the turbine could be housed above.below or in an adjacent building.
