its best to teach a horse to bow with one leg it is a lot easier and it is safer on the legs incase of injury but it isnt unhealthy the horse didnt resist. it was neat seeing it done a little differently good job!
First I thought that you did this on command.. but at the and you can see that you really pull in his mouth... Why? This can be learned on enough other ways! 0.o
I taught my horse to bow but i don't bend his head like that i just tap his shoulder with my foot so he lifts that leg, then ask him to back up and he kneels with one leg stretched out :) it helps that my sister taught him to do it on the ground first of course lol.
actually, it doesnt strain there legs amandacosner, it stretchs(sp?) them and there back, alot of horses learn to like it a lot after learning it. and if you watch you horse out in the pasture you will see that horses usually bow like that just about every morning on there own, to stretch there bodys
@amandacosner No, the horse will go into a position that's comfortable for him/her. If it was uncomfortable, they would've resisted. It's also a good stretching technique before lessons or extensive riding.
Nice trick...not sure aobut the bit though, we have 7 horses nearly all of them can but they only do it for a treat between there legs, we use it to strech there neck and back muscules but they go quite far now...i have a video of our hackney doing it :D
There's this Appy pony at our barn, One Trick Pony(Simon), and I got stuck with him for a show. I had asked him to back up, and I felt lower and I'm like "Debbie, is he bowing?" He did it like five times that night. He can bow, count, yes, no, and march.
Yes it's a great trick. And it is actually so extremely easy to teach. Without any equipment or treats or such. That is teaching. This, what we see on this film is nothing more than forcing the horse with the help of the bit's painful effect in the mouth...
@dsshagya I don't mean to be rude, but without a bit, how the hell do you think we'd control horses? Halters work, yes, but for training a horse you have to use a bit. If bits didn't exist, we'd have to use give-a-more's. In case you don't know what a give-a-more is, it's a lot like a hackamore but it uses pressure points and is 10x more painful than a bit. What would you prefer, a steel bar in your mouth, or a metal chord banging against your nose and jaw the whole time? bits ARE humane.
