I was at the superdome New orleans saw VH with the stones and doobie bros..at that time i had never heard of vh,,being a guitarist i was totally blown away watchin eddie ,,we were approx 15" away from the stage..This was in 1978 I had just turned 19 and was legal drinkin age ,,man alls I can say is wow, wow, wow saw them again in 2007 in Little Rock and eddie still has that edge,,P.S. The Stones were drunk and out of tune I left after 2 songs
I was fortunate to be attending that night in Selland Arena in Fresno, California in September, 1978 (when this video was shot). They opened for Black Sabbath and blew them off the stage! Ozzy was kicked out of BS shortly thereafter.
eddie was asked one time how he felt about everyone imitating his style (big hair 80's) and he said it was like owning this bad ass ferrari and one day someone comes by your house in your ferrari and says hey check out the ride I got! Hey mother fucker! That's MY ferrari!
whats with all the hatin? eddie said in an interview once that he got the tapping idea after watching page hammer on for a while in a solo...both bands where killer and much better than most of the shit out now so just enjoy the music and keep rockin out
@stratdem HELL YES THEY WOULD SHIT ALL OVER ZEPPELIN!!!!! Zeppelin fans actually compare Page to EVH. They also say Plant is better than Roth. If VH would have played on the same bill with them, zeppelin wouldn't even take the stage. Fat fuck peter grant would NEVER let that happen. VH would also Smoke AC/DC. Angus and Malcolm together couldn't play like Eddie. Brian Johnson...please.
haha... yeah anyone who would put Page's playing and tone on par with Eddie's is listening to something other than the guitar playing itself. Emotion and belief plays a strong role in people's opinions!
@edsnotgodable - so you have multiple accounts??? You're such a fucking loser. I DON'T CARE IF YOU DON'T LIKE EDDIE......BUT YOU ARE A LUNATIC WHO RAMBLES ON ABOUT RACE ,DRINKING PISS AND YOUNG BOYS.

I get that you don't like Ed and I can respect that but it's just odd to ME that you spend so much time slagging him and other people for liking him..... That I don't respect. I don't like hip hop but I wouldn't spend ANY time under a rap video slagging it...Not worth my time and it seems insane.
@Adnoydall - OK... That is a clear and logical response...Simple. What I PERSONALLY think you are missing is how Ed pretty much made a statement to guitar world in the minute and a half solo - He changed the scope of rock guitar in less than 2 minutes. Everything everyone knew about Rock guitar changed from that point on....That is a fact.
You don't like it...I get it but it's hardly wanking....Sheer technique and talent combined with amazing tone and control unlike anything heard at that time.
@Adnoydall sure i outgrew certain aspects for fandom long ago too, but it doesn't make sense to take things that far out of context. Sometimes i might feel like Liszt, or Scriabin, then Charlie Parker, or Peggy Lee, or Queen, Rush, or Elvis, then Cocteau Twins... then RATT whatever. @Adnoydall -Really? So you take EVERYTHING I said about YOU and say it to me...That is a clever defense..Sort of like "I know you are but what am I?". Except I outgrew that 30 some years ago.
All of this coming from a "man" who by the looks of it spends more time than ANYONE should finding and dare I say goes out of his way to find EVH videos and leave such clever and witty comments.

@slingkey The studio version of Eruption was all we needed. Eddie put everything he knew at the time, into that song. It's not just a song either, but a biography of Eddie Van Halen. The king.

Wow, the early days of shred! I know most would disagree, but I like the Frankenstrat better with the black and white paint job. The biggest trip about this is he didn't have a locking tremolo on the thing yet, but yet he was able to keep it in tune!!! He's the man!

i dont understand how it went from hendrix to this in less than 10 years, this shit never happens in this day and age, and eddie must have been playing like that in 74 so even less time went past, fucking legend
this is exactly the way they came out at the colleseum in the cape!unknown but not for long!sabbath was awsome with ozzy too.vh were rippin it up in them days!you cant deny their hunger and chemistry.nothin beats the origional!
Blurry, but great footage. I was fortunate to see the orignial VH as a 14 yr old on April 2, 1984 at Brendan Byrne Arena in NJ, before they broke up, and it was a thrill, I'll never forget it. Missed the reunion tour, but nostangic as I am, I hope they go back on tour soon, Michael Anthony included!
saw them opening for black sabbath nov 78. in northern france( small town called cambrai) i met eddie in LA and we talked about this show and tour.
my first and best show ever !! ozzy was so pissed off because after the vh show nobody responded to sabbath. they look so dead. and vh was so new. we have never seen anything like that. crazy dave, eddie sound and play !!!!
it was insane. maybe 3000 , 4000 people. but it felt like 20,000... my best rocknroll memories !!!
I should have seen VH support Sabbath on that tour, in Liverpool. But by then Sabbath had kicked them off and they had been replaced by a totally crap punk band. Sad thing is I can still remember their name - Tanz der youth, I think. When I heard VH 1st album afterwards, I was really pissed.
When the first VH album hit...the entire guitar community collectively gasp'd at what was coming through the speakers. It was unbelievable, nothing before...or since...has had THAT kind of impact on rock guitar.
Simply put, no other rock guitar player has introduced so many techniques on a single album and influenced more people than Edward Van Halen. Period.
If Hendrix took the guitar to the stratosphere, then Eddie took it to another universe.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The only good Boston I remember is "smokin" and "foreplay". All metal bands fade when they get over 30. The first 2 VH albums are total Kick-A, but it's downhill after that. IMHO.
eddie is a genius, i saw a heavy metal documentary, were they described eddie van halens styles of playing as being like that of some old composer from like 15th century or soemthing i cant remember the name but he played an organ and their was sound clip of his music on teh origan and it sounded similar to what eddie doed with finger tapping and speed licks
have heard a lot about the VH cause of the Sabbath breakup..i saw the Sabbath/VH tour in 78. it was really great everyone was blown away by VH...just blown away but Sabbath came out and did a great show. VH are a hard act to follow for ANY BAND. Can you imagine trying to come out and play after a young hungry VH version 1 just played? yeah. maybe OZZY was a bit intimidated BUT both were really great.. at the time VH was the sound of the future. fast and heavy. Sabbath was slower and HEAVY.
I saw them open for Boston in Boston Garden (77 or 78) Ed did this shit all over, and everyone's mouths were agape. We were still trying to figure out what planet he was from when Boston came out an, well, sucked. We wanted that kid back. Ed is God, you know? Wish he's stop smoking so he could be around longer.
i just read that one of the reasons ozzy osbourne left black sabbath was because van halen was blowing them off the stage every night and it was embarassing. so i guess you could say that.
saw black sabbath at birmingham odeon in 78, van halen blew my 17 year old head apart, sabbath were 3 tracks in doing snowblind and iommis amps "blew up" concert cancelled, following week resceduled concert no van halen only a shit local punk band and sabbath were very poor. so your comment makes a lot of sence. cheers mate.
Eddie never listed Jimi Hendrix as a major influence, but in this video you can see some Hendrix style of moves and playing. I think Ed was influenced by Hendrix but he never admitted it. He usually says Clapton was his inspiration.
Very true. He also never mentions Billy Gibbons, but you can clearly hear the ZZ Top influence. Eddie swears he learned every single Clapton solo, but there's more to him than Clapton. Billy taught Eddie about them harmonics, man!
Yeah, this guy is a guitar extraordinaire! This is the best reminder of who this pioneering innovative genius is and how he has impacted ANYONE today! WOW! Great video!
I have to say, after all of these years..Eddie VanHalen is the master of guitar. I wish he would have chosen to sober up and stay married..still though, the best guitarist in the business.
Awesome video! I know I won't make any friends saying this, but... Randy, Van Halen, Hendrix, Page, dare I say Dimebag, they all borrowed from those who preceded them. And we wouldn't be talking about any of them if they weren't incredible and influential. Also, tapping is a classical technique, even used on violin. Double-locking tremolo, overdriving amps, thats seriously inventive too.
hendrix didnt. the only thing hendrix did that people before him did was use some of the same scales and chords, but he pretty much invented everything about rock guitar. before him everyone was playing what you heard on the beano album but not as well.
OH, and Randy and Eddie were local rivals in a way. Even later on, Randy would talk about it. He also said there were many good players who just never got "discovered." George Lynch was one for example.
P.S. Randy thought George was (dare I say it) better than Eddie. When Randy got the Ozzy gig, he even asked George to take over his job teaching guitar at his mom's school...for 5 bucks an hour (lol). Hey, it's more in 1979 dollars than in 2008 dollars!!
Whoa, hold on a second. You say Randy never left his mark on music? what about, oh I don't know...the DIMINISHED SCALE?!?!?! (and Jackson guitars, lol)
Besides, Malmsteen didn't come onto the scene until 1984, 2 years AFTER Randy died.
Don't get me wrong, Eddie is good, and I am not saying Randy is better or Eddie is better;
what I AM saying is that Randy did make contributions is the short time he was around.
He went BEYOND pentatonic and major scales. But I like both guys, so HA!
Eddie Has Always been god's right hand man, Jimi Hendrix is WITH GOD NOW and yes he was incredible, BUT EDDIE IS STILL ALIVE TO HELP THE WORLD WITH HIS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!, besides i went to see them in their reunion tour with Roth and i gotta tell you all, his solo there was WAY BETTER than what is in this video
Randy was born in 1956, one year after Eddie. So he was not "too young". He formed Quiet Riot in 1975 at the age of 17 and went on to play The Whiskey and The Starwood, as did Van halen. Neither you nor I was there to say who told him to turn his back. I was referring to an article in VH fan magazine The Inside to which I subscribed in the 90's, so, obviously I am a fan of Eddies. I never stated Randy was a problem for Eddie. I personaly don't think they compare.
Eddies friends from his days in Pasadena actually warned him that Randy Rhoads was going to come to a show just to steal some of his licks and that he should "turn his back to him when he was doing his tapping tricks". That is from an old Inside magazine article and shows it wasn't even Eddie or Randys fault for the rift. Randy was curious and learning and Eddie was innovative and a little insecure. Nothing more , nothing less.
Eddie never turned his back because of Rhoads. Rhoads was too young and probably never heard about EVH until the release of VH1. By this time, EVH was told to turn his back by his producer, so he would reveal the tapping AFTER the album was released. By the time Rhoads was something, the tapping was no secret to anyone anymore.
Rhoads was never a problem to EVH, everybody knows that.
Eddie was the last real guitar hero. Yeah there were faster people and more technical guitarists after him but he paved the way for them. He cant even live up to his reputation now. Hes waysted...
Yeah Randy was classically trained. Eddie was self-taught by using his pitch perfect!? Ears, both are two distinctively different syle guitarists. Any teenagers seeing this in 1978 would have crapped their pants..lol
Eddie didn't fear shit? Then why did he play with his back turned when he learned tapping? Why did he always think someone was copying him or gonna steal from him? Randy taught and played music and could also read and write it as well. there are many guitarists in bizz today who were his students and they r still in awe.randy never owned a stereo or vh record and u can claim he copied eddie? randy doesn't even sound like eddie even on his worst day! Eddie was repetitive randy wasn't.
You mean playing that bunch of easy classical arpeggios and chords that every kid learns in a music school, isn't repetitive?
As good as RR was, in reality he left NOTHING for us, because when he came with that bunch of fast picks and classical melodies, MALMSTEEN was already there, doing the very same thing.
Nobody, and I mean it, nobody in the world never, EVER said: this technique was left by RR. Don't get me wrong, RR was a talented guitarrist who died too young, but that is all.
Nobody should compare guitar heroes to guitar heroes.... The thing is, everyone has their own personal style EXCEPT, that piece of garbage, or as many of you know him as, the tallentless turd of a human being much less a guitarist, brad giligan gillis... Now there is a true brownie hound. Watching him perform is like watching him masterbate, cause the only one who enjoys it is him, and he shouldnt be doing it in public. All I am saying is he sux really bad, thats all...
I saw them right before the first album came out. Eddie was like nothing I had ever heard before. I see no reason to compare him to anyone. There are many great guitarists and he is one of them.
how come everytime i watch a video like this, these assholes start a debate over who is the best, EVH or Randy Rhoads or Hendrix or Page? does it really fuckin matter? its a matter of opinion, which everyone is entitled to. so just shutup and enjoy the video, dickheads.

I saw the same tour in Houston I walked out on Sabbath, they did not have the energy Van Halen had that night nor ever will

wow dude!! i was at the spectrum also !!!
(grew up in conroe) after van halens performance
it was like who the hell is black sabbath?!?!
no band could have followed that show!!!
i still have an iron horshoe-nail cross from sabbath
that ozzy threw in the crowd

Theo80126 2 years ago
i just read that one of the reasons ozzy osbourne left black sabbath was because van halen was blowing them off the stage every night and it was embarassing. so i guess you could say that.
livinontheedge78 3 years ago 2
saw black sabbath at birmingham odeon in 78, van halen blew my 17 year old head apart, sabbath were 3 tracks in doing snowblind and iommis amps "blew up" concert cancelled, following week resceduled concert no van halen only a shit local punk band and sabbath were very poor. so your comment makes a lot of sence. cheers mate.

Eddie never listed Jimi Hendrix as a major influence, but in this video you can see some Hendrix style of moves and playing. I think Ed was influenced by Hendrix but he never admitted it. He usually says Clapton was his inspiration.
sholstein 3 years ago
Very true. He also never mentions Billy Gibbons, but you can clearly hear the ZZ Top influence. Eddie swears he learned every single Clapton solo, but there's more to him than Clapton. Billy taught Eddie about them harmonics, man!

Double-locking tremolo, overdriving amps, thats seriously inventive too.
buriedeternally 3 years ago
hendrix didnt. the only thing hendrix did that people before him did was use some of the same scales and chords, but he pretty much invented everything about rock guitar. before him everyone was playing what you heard on the beano album but not as well.
PMCMANIS 3 years ago
OH, and Randy and Eddie were local rivals in a way. Even later on, Randy would talk about it. He also said there were many good players who just never got "discovered." George Lynch was one for example.
P.S. Randy thought George was (dare I say it) better than Eddie. When Randy got the Ozzy gig, he even asked George to take over his job teaching guitar at his mom's school...for 5 bucks an hour (lol). Hey, it's more in 1979 dollars than in 2008 dollars!!
kamalayka1 3 years ago
Whoa, hold on a second. You say Randy never left his mark on music? what about, oh I don't know...the DIMINISHED SCALE?!?!?! (and Jackson guitars, lol)
Besides, Malmsteen didn't come onto the scene until 1984, 2 years AFTER Randy died.
Don't get me wrong, Eddie is good, and I am not saying Randy is better or Eddie is better;
what I AM saying is that Randy did make contributions is the short time he was around.
He went BEYOND pentatonic and major scales. But I like both guys, so HA!
kamalayka1 3 years ago
Eddie Has Always been god's right hand man, Jimi Hendrix is WITH GOD NOW and yes he was incredible, BUT EDDIE IS STILL ALIVE TO HELP THE WORLD WITH HIS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!, besides i went to see them in their reunion tour with Roth and i gotta tell you all, his solo there was WAY BETTER than what is in this video
Quarantine419 3 years ago
eddie at his best before he tuke too many drugs
sexyduck69 3 years ago
Randy was born in 1956, one year after Eddie. So he was not "too young". He formed Quiet Riot in 1975 at the age of 17 and went on to play The Whiskey and The Starwood, as did Van halen. Neither you nor I was there to say who told him to turn his back. I was referring to an article in VH fan magazine The Inside to which I subscribed in the 90's, so, obviously I am a fan of Eddies. I never stated Randy was a problem for Eddie. I personaly don't think they compare.
cgrass 3 years ago
Eddies friends from his days in Pasadena actually warned him that Randy Rhoads was going to come to a show just to steal some of his licks and that he should "turn his back to him when he was doing his tapping tricks". That is from an old Inside magazine article and shows it wasn't even Eddie or Randys fault for the rift. Randy was curious and learning and Eddie was innovative and a little insecure. Nothing more , nothing less.
cgrass 3 years ago
Eddie never turned his back because of Rhoads. Rhoads was too young and probably never heard about EVH until the release of VH1. By this time, EVH was told to turn his back by his producer, so he would reveal the tapping AFTER the album was released. By the time Rhoads was something, the tapping was no secret to anyone anymore.
Rhoads was never a problem to EVH, everybody knows that.

you can argue all u want about hows best but hendrix eddie satch page bb king r the most influential

saulocpp 3 years ago
America shaped him, he was just born in Holland.
Similar to how you were born in a mountain of garbage in Guatemala and you became a Brazilian original. Kudos.
nonplayerzealot4 3 years ago
this is the reason why I want to play guitar.
Yeah Randy was classically trained. Eddie was self-taught by using his pitch perfect!? Ears, both are two distinctively different syle guitarists. Any teenagers seeing this in 1978 would have crapped their pants..lol
wisesatyr72 3 years ago
Eddie didn't fear shit? Then why did he play with his back turned when he learned tapping? Why did he always think someone was copying him or gonna steal from him? Randy taught and played music and could also read and write it as well. there are many guitarists in bizz today who were his students and they r still in awe.randy never owned a stereo or vh record and u can claim he copied eddie? randy doesn't even sound like eddie even on his worst day! Eddie was repetitive randy wasn't.
sm34g 3 years ago
have you ever listened to beleiver and mr.crowley solos back to back?
vanhalenkid 3 years ago

All I am saying is he sux really bad, thats all...
kered74 3 years ago
Yeah you're right. I just watched a clip of him and he's pretty shitty. What do you think of Paul Gilbert?
dirthpool 3 years ago
I saw them right before the first album came out. Eddie was like nothing I had ever heard before. I see no reason to compare him to anyone. There are many great guitarists and he is one of them.
maxoutput 3 years ago
how come everytime i watch a video like this, these assholes start a debate over who is the best, EVH or Randy Rhoads or Hendrix or Page? does it really fuckin matter? its a matter of opinion, which everyone is entitled to. so just shutup and enjoy the video, dickheads.
