@Platewarp OMG, you rock. I went on three websites and two vids and no one said that the flash has to be up. Thank you so much and much success on your channel. I feel empowered!!!! I will put this vid on my blog. It's super helpful.
@benandtinagilbert The flash fires to trigger the speed light remotely. It does not affect the exposure of the image because it is a pre flash, your eyes can not tell though.
Hola! I am so sad, I was looking for these instructions for my Nikon D5000, but I saw It has not the repeating flash and commander mode options :( , I did not know that when I bought it two years ago. Well it is time to change of Nikon model. Thanks for your help. Greetings from Mexico.
I thought the flashes were to be used for the mounting spot on top of the d90? So when and where are the flashes necessary to mount on the camera instead of having it like you in the video everywhere except on top it?
@gyulab1 That's how fast the camera can communicate with the flash via CLS. For a faster speed, use it on camera, or buy a wireless trigger system (I have a review of one on my channel).
Id say the only down fall to this is if youre shooting action sports (bmx) You cant shoot over 200 for your shutter speed. I love this function but speed kills lol
nice and clear. nice vid man. Helps me get past all the jargon. Do you know if you had all 6 slave flashes going if they would work in TTL? I'm kind of confused how this works. For instance, if I had a flash on the left and right of the subject as well as behind the subject; would they all automatically fire the same power or would they adjust by distance from the subject? Sounds like a new video for you? ha. Thanks again
If you had multiple flashes they would all have different power depending on the distance, TTL works for up to 6 flashes in each group so you could have 12 TTL flashes set up. If I had that many flashes I would definitely make a new video for you.
u can also get a SG-3IR filter, using this will not affect the exposure at all. only lets the ir light needed to fire ur off camera flash. bout 15 bucks..
@AMMProd If you have the built in flash set to "- -" Then the flash will be open but will not affect the pictures. The flash has to be open to send a signal to the "slave" flash.
It fires a pre-flash when set to '--'. You don't notice that it's a pre-flash because of the speed but when you use something like slow sync the pre-flash on the built-in flash will go much earlier than the off-camera flash. I did some tests myself in close quarters with the built-in flash set to 'TTL' or '--' and you really can notice the difference between the shots, the flash doesn't appear in the shots at '--'.
I have spent hours online searching sites, forums, etc, and looking at other youtube tutorials trying to figure this out and your video and directions are the most straightforward and comprehensible of all I have seen. Thank you so much!
@bluerox I am glad I could help. Would you mind helping out others by sharing this video on your facebook or twitter? Would you like a tutorial on anything else?
great tutorial, but im wondering if there is anyway for me to use my flash offcamera without the popup flash going off as well, the pop up flash is really washing out everything
Thank you!!!! You made this comprehensive and very straightforward and i now have my wireless flash working. Thank you so much! keep going, you're good at this!
In commander mode, set the built-in flash to "---". The built-in flash will fire though but the purpose is to communicate with the slave flash. The flash won't affect the shot's exposure.
@wjmatos733 Thank you for the positive feedback :) It really means a lot. I'm glad I could help. Be amazing and subscribe or share this video with someone?
