a) when the idea of communism evolved in the late 19th and early 20th century, the churches supported the existing rulers and were therefore the natural enemy of revolutionaries. (much of europe still had monarchs back then)
b) religion gives people (false) hope and the prospect of an afterlife. That makes them much more likely to accept their current situation and therefore less likely to start a revolution.
Communists adopted atheism as a tool to gain power and control.

@Molo9000 I'd like to take issue with reason number 2. Religion does not give people false hope. People with real faith and hope in God can be quite willing to take chances. A frank example of this would be America's founding fathers. Atheism does force you to put your faith in the corrupt heart of man.

No offense but "God" is not responsible for those things, religion is. Therefore humans are to blame. Humans will also use laws, propaganda, patriotism or any other ism to further their own ends.
