god thank you for posting this. beautiful american women, with a great GREAT voice. this is actually a massive piece of history, and you have done your part to preserve it. god bless YOU. and the United States of America. and lets get rid of david rockerfeller, zibignew brezinski, henry kissinger etc etc robert zoellick and those kind of people, those PEICES OF GARBAGE who do not belong to a nation, they are "internationalists" FUCK THEM ALL get them out of the US! they dont represent us!
she was beautiful, she was a real american women and she beat all the competition and status quo when she blew us away she was the very first and she will always be the best.
What is also impressive, is that right up until she passed away, she kept trying to get God Bless America as our national anthem. Great Lady ... I have at least one CD of her songs, with this song on it. I remember watching her on TV in the 50's, when she had her own show. "When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain", was her theme for the show.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful song with us all for free :)
I had never heard this vasion of the lyrics. I like it when she sings "let us all be grateful that we are far from there" LOL, really shows the contrast between the miserable state of Europe and the prosperity of the USA at the time.
I hope this original debut gets remastered to top quality by someone, it really deserves a good treatment.
I'm curious: Most sources claim that she introduced the song on November 11, 1938 (then known as Armistice Day, now Veteran's Day). How do you explain the difference in the date?
Of a time when looks didn't matter, only true talent. Kate has inspired me all of my life. Best memory-1973-she appeared on the TV show Tony Orlando and Dawn. She stepped out, delivered a rafters shaking, awe inspiring, patriot heart swelling performance, receiving a lasting standing ovation from the TV audience (extremely rare in those days). After about twenty seconds, Tony came out and stated the obvious-Kate is great.
Thanks so much for posting this! I remember hearing Kate Smith sing it on TV when i was a kid. I didn't know it had been written for her! I was going to FW this one to some friends, but hate to do so with the vulgar comment (below). if you have a way of re-posting with comments disabled....that would be great! I'll try to figure out how to do it....but I'm technically challenged. Anyway...thanks again!
