What gets me the most with this track is the back masked voice near the end of the track. I've reversed it yet still can't decipher what it's saying. Very similar to what The Beatles used to do.
If no one is claiming this track, then it is mine, yours, everyone's. Public domain. Anyone can do anything they want with it. You can even make money with it without acknowledgements or paying royalties.
I'm sick of the "It's not The Beatles" debate. I believe it’s The Beatles. The timbre of John's voice is very distinctive. The lyrics are very ‘John’. When I was a small child, my brothers used to sneak me into their room late at night for 'musical education'. This song, What's the New Mary Jane & Revolution No.9 were 3 of their favourite tracks they'd put on to freak me out. I was terrified & intrigued. As an adult, this song is the best aural representation of an LSD experience I've ever heard
I will now prove that this is a Beatles song. Go to @0:40, and listen to the guitar riff. Now listen to the opening guitar riff of Dear Prudence. Not identical, but similar. Same technique.
@ChrisPenta it's called the travis-picking. John was tought this picking technique in 1968 by Donovan, and not in 1967, when this song is supposed to be written.
@kimonsk Ah I was not aware of that. As there is no way to prove or disprove this songs legitimacy at this point in history, I just go off of feel. It just feels like a Beatles track. Eh, can't hurt to let people think what they want at this point.
@kimonsk But at 2:20 I can't put my finger on who that is singing. The rest sounds like George and/or John, but the piece starting at 2:20 makes me think its someone doing a damn good imitation. I'm not sure why they would do an imitation just to throw it in the trash though.
I suggest everyone read the well written summation of this song on wikipedia. I'm torn between wanting to believe there is Beatle involvement, and the more likely scenario that it is an Apple related act doing their best Bealtes impression.
THIS IS THE BEATLES !!! It's not on EMI's records, because it's recorded at one of The Beatles' homes. Probably in 1967, around the time when they did the demo's for the White Album. It's double-tracked and has backwards guitars in it, which is something The Beatles invented in 1966 with Rain. The guitar picking is the same as Dear Prudence. The text describes an LSD trip, which is something which John was very much into in 1968. I recognise the voices of John and George.
SOUNDS NOTHING LIKE THE BEATLES...The picking used is called Nashville style i think... listen to any given 60s country songs and you'll probably hear it... I assume if you end up here you must be a fan of the Beatles, you should know better. And compare it to the other White Album era home recordings; they clearly had better home equipment than this. Why would they go to the trouble of doing all the double track stuff and reverse recording on a shitty portable recorder anyhow? (they wouldn't)
Actually, this is where the diehards and the casual fans split. The diehards just KNOW what The Beatles sound like and can easily dismiss this, while the casual fans who've only recently learned what a Liverpudlian accent is (but still can't do one) and who likely couldn't tell you what Paul McCartney's lead-off single from 'Press To Play' was without looking it up on Wikipedia are now the self-proclaimed 'analysts' who are going to credit this amateur's demo to The Beatles.
@reverendflash I'm 13 and I can comfirm this is not The Beatles. It doesn't sound like them. I think it's just some obscure apple band. It dissapoints me a little because I used to think of this as a cool mystery and that but this isn't the beatles at all.
Hey, Poster - You really need to stop calling this a Beatles recording in the video and the description. There's never been any proof that it's The Beatles; only the word of bootleggers (an honorable lot). You should at least say it's 'rumored to be' The Beatles or 'allegedly' or 'possibly' The Beatles.
It's title is really "Piece of Mind." I know because I wrote it and played it in 1970-71. All overdubs of myself, on an old Wollensak tape deck. Someone got ahold of the tape and sold it to someone in 1972 or 1973 claiming it to be a rare Beatles tune. It isn't. It's me. Sorry to disappoint. I suppose a voice print could prove it.
Mr. Walter Jones, i think that all things you said, it's not true, because, i am sure that you could go with the law, and gave your tape back with you, and i think, it's very funny to give a very a expensive and rare material to one boy, and i think now there are very technological advances to analize the voices and know if that voice it's yours.
@waltonjones3 Hello Walton, If you wrote it and sang it, why don't you make a good recording of it. I really like it . It must be a gass to see your song on the odd Beatles bootleg !
It's amazing. Probably the most unidentified psychedelic song. It's a shame no one can officially claim it. If the Fab four have no involvement in this it is definately Beatlesque.
this could be the Beatles You can tell the singer does indeed sound like Lennon If this is a fake, it is a very, very skillfully made . I think i see why it's so freaky, it sounds like it's about Death how it's not the end for them because they r going to meet again. Kind of like how i imagine Heaven. Sutcliffe, Lennon & Harrison waiting on McCartney, Starr & Best
R.I.P. Stuart Sutcliffe, John Lennon, & George Harrison. Your music touched the lives of millions. Including Me.
Very beautifully put, but I have one slightly out-of-it theory. If it ISN'T George or John, what if it's Billy Shears? Like, William Shears Campbell, what if he DOES exist, and he was trying to get a solo career?
John Winn, author of several books documenting Beatles recordings, replied: "No evidence of such a title has turned up in the EMI tape log, the Lennon home archive, the 80 hours of 'Get Back' sessions, copyright records, any written documentation, or any interview (Paul, Ringo, and George Martin have all been asked about 'Peace Of Mind' and/or 'The Candle Burns' and it didn't ring a bell with any of them). I would bet my entire collection that it's not a Beatle recording."
Something else to consider also; find the video "Beatles Marlboro Cigarette Commercial" posted by "WhenLilacsLast". It features a short bit at the end with John and George speaking in unison. No music, just their voices. Compare that with what you hear on "Candle". Sounds VERY similar to my ears.
Okay, find this video on Youtube-- ."It's All Too Much - original longer mixed" posted by Sailawayraymond. I completely agree. It's clearly George singing...with harmony vocals overdubbed by George. The sitar is in there, which George was playing at the time. The lyrics are also very Within you, without you too...!
i read this was found in a bin in the Beatles Apple studios along with another Beatles out-fake "oh i want you" back when artists where sending in tapes to "Apple Corps."
I have this lp!!! I found it in a basement collection!!! its at least 35 years old, any ideas on wher to take it to athinticate it? it does have insert and many interviews with them on this lp, I played on reg 78 and 45 mix it sounds just like them, hummmmmm
this is the alien autopsy of "beatles outtakes". deliberately obscured to distract the listener's attention from the fact that this song really fits no particular style from any beatles period despite it's so called psychedelic feel, lyrics so preposterous and unsophisticated none of the fab four would ever lay claim to, and a tune too boring to even spend 30 seconds on, let alone the time it took to make up this piece of crap. it might fool the casual listener, but not a beatles fan.
This is definitely not The Beatles. Actually, it kinda reminds me of a Beatles-style "Metallica/Slash/etc. Shreds" video. It just fucking sucks and Lennon would never make that song no matter how much acid he dropped.
In the early days of bootlegging, the bootleggers use to add just about add just about any recording that sounded remotely like the Beatles. This isn't the Beatles, neither is "LS Bumble Bee." By the way the most amazing fake is "Its Gonna Be Alright." You'll swear its them but its not.
If any of you guitarists are interested in hearing a cleaned-up remake to learn the picking pattern etc you can hear it on my site greenleafrecords(dot)110mb(dot)com I'd love to know what you think :) P.S. I don't think this is The Beatles AT ALL
I actually just heard that this is by a band called The End which was produced by Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones. I'm not sure if there is any truth to this though.
Okay, I practically worship John Lennon--but this sounds absolutely NOTHING like him. This singer even pronounces words differently than Lennon would pronounce. Second, the Beatles would have NEVER put so much effort in speeding up/overdubbing a crummy demo with next to no melody at all. Third, the lyrics: they downright stink. But they also just aren't in his style. Lennon (or any of the Beatles for that matter) would never write anything that uninspired and lame.
I think you're right here. The person singing doesn't sound nearly as much like John OR George as ppl want to think. I also agree they probably wouldn't have put THIS much effort into a demo. Not to mention I've never heard a Beatles demo that sounded this bad... I don't agree about the lyrics sucking, but this certainly doesn't sound like John's writing. It sounds more like Floyd lyrics, but it's definitely not them either... I dunno. Just my thoughts.
i believe the notion that it's an abandoned apple audition more than anything. and someone said that it sounds like playing from dear prudence and how donovan taught john to play, but if this was 67 then they hadn't gone to india yet. and most likely if it was a stoned demo/acid demo or whatever similar to whats the new mary jane, yoko's voice would've been involved somehow most likely.
About twenty years ago I had the chance to I asked to Paul McCartney and he said that he didn't know the song but he heard about it and it's not the Beatles. Somenone said that it is a Syd Barret demo, but I think is not.
One part of the backwards talking is someone, possibly George, saying "Sorry". Sounds very similar to John's voice, and the guitar is like "Dear Prudence". Either a deliberate attempt at pretending to be the Beatles, or a home made tape by them.
This track appeared on several vinyl bootlegs in the seventies and eighties. However, there was always some doubt as to its authenticity. Eventually, it was determined to be a fake and was dropped from most subsequent bootlegs. It remains "unreleased" because it's not them!
Why can't any one just ask the remaing beatles if they ever recorded this song in 67

if it is not the beatles, it is a brilliant "out-fake"

I think it is them:
1. vocals very similar to lennon's - VERY unique
2. guitar style - what lennon had just learned from donovan in india - rare at the time in pop groups.
3. the twangy sitar style lead guitar parts sound like harrison
4the arrangement and sound quality is poor, but the harmonies at times are actually very good - on the word "begun" typical beatles 3 -part.
5. the beatles were capable of sloppy, stoned performances and demos - listen to let it be out-takes

Believe me, this is not the Beatles...probably an Apple audition tape, as was previously mentioned.

Even the Beatles' most throw-away, scattershot unreleased recordings and demos lack the laughable pretensions and self-importance of this dreck.

Rumor has it, Peace of Mind was found in the trash bin at Apple. It could be any one of the hundreds of audition tapes people sent in.

This track appeared on several vinyl bootlegs in the seventies and eighties. However, there was always some doubt as to its authenticity. Eventually, it was determined to be a fake and was dropped from most subsequent bootlegs. It remains "unreleased" because it's not them!

It`s a tape John made at his house with George. He also did What`s the news Maryjane there with George all while they were on acid.
