Dr Zubrin. I watched your televised program on the Manned Mars Mission, and I think you are correct in that we should go to Mars. Like in the old days when the Russkies were going into space first, think of the panic, if a major country got to Mars first, and Earth was in trouble. Maybe there is another way to "stir things up" and have America desperate to get to Mars? I have an idea.

The only thing that will make America go to Mars and now (In the next decade) is if someone else vows to get their first. If China declares they will put a man on mars by 2018 this is the factor that would force America to put a man on their first

I'd like to see any country willing to spend the hundreds of billions neccessary to find, start, and expand a mars colony. In the future when technology provides a cheaper and faster route to mars, maybe. But until then I don't see any country rushing to do something with no immediate returns.

Not saying i dont want it to happen though. I'd like nothing more than to see a mars colony in my lifetime.

Mr Bush has actually set us back by squandering billions; President Obama will, like Kennedy set a grand goal to Mars by the end of the decade. Hopefully he will choose Mars Direct and not the more expensive nuclear rocket route. Of course there is risk. A little shielding for radiation; and artificial gravity, (spin) is really all you need. We can wait; or we can go now.

Obama wants to raid human space exploration funds to pay for his education plan. He is explicitly against returning to the moon and going to Mars. It's clearly stated at the end of the document entitled "Barack Obama's Plan for Lifetime Success Through Education" which is posted on his website.

A brilliant man with a brilliant vision. I wish we could have had a Mars Direct style mission instead of the Iraq War. Mars has the same land surface as Earth - 150million sq km's. There's enough room for hundreds of colonies, representing dozens of nations. A human life spent engineering a frontier is worth a hundred lives lived upon a long conquered rock...
