The condition of west Philly's El, was in satisfactory condtion, I just found this out, and there initial intent was to reconstruct all the main supports an widen the stance of the supports, or make them centrally located underneath, it would have costed way-way more. Cheaper to replace it.
I think the new structure look horrible, no character, they most likely wanted to just replace the trackbed, I do not know what the structures overall condition was, it had a concrete track bed above, as it did from 1903, our elevated was way newer than New York, Boston and Chicago's, there structures were built differently, this structure sat right in the middle of Market street, Northeast was easier to restore, the structural supports went to the curb, it of course was built way later.
i cant wait for the whole reconstruction to be complete so far 46th 56th 60th are complete while millbourne is still under reconstruction and 52nd is half way done. nice vid by the way
They are replacing the structure with a new concrete structure and T pillers in the street. They are also renovating the stations with brand new ones. At this time, 46th St and Millbourne are closed and to be rebuilt. 52nd is half way done and is open during construction! 56th and 60th St are both open and rebuilt already.
This is so friggin' nostalgic...! I live in Japan and whenever I get on the elevator I do the "doors are opening!" line and people look at me like I'm nuts...
Not sure if you mean the old EL or the new one, but the new one didn't seem so bad when I was there on Sunday... Of course though the old one will be less maintained since it's going to be gone soon anyway's.
I have to visit again sometime. I already rode the Girad Avenue Trolley and the 33 bus. I've yet to ride the Market-Frankford or the Broad Street Lines.
I did do a Norristown local run, however it's sideview and not front view. I'd post it but my biggest problem with it is I lost it in a HD crash and can't find it's master. :(
Maybe, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Standing in front of the glass may get the driver angry if he sees the camera. If I'm sitting behind the glass in the seat, chances are pretty much always against me and I end up having an ass in front of my face. :/
Yes, it's a great line. Though the new reconstruction of the Market St Side(shown here in it's pre-construction state), while looking nice, isn't as nice as it used to be. I'll miss the ORIGINAL steel structure.
i like the old layout better it was quieter and smoother than it is now.

the el has gotten so dirty it is ridiculous the regional rail lines aren't far behind either if septa keeps letting them go the way they are.
