A few years back we had a British Airways jet(don't know them well enough to know which model) do a flyby over the General Electric plant nearby. The local news used to always tell the public a day or so before hand, but not this time. The crew flew extremely low and they did some really odd maneuvers along with turning with the wing near vertical and then flew off into the distance. Phones at the police stations nearby rang off the hook as people thought there was a near crash heheh.
They fired the pilot? @tasman763, you think safety was compromised? How so? Excessive speed? Definitely not. Too low? Not really, however, any lower and I could see where it could make somebody a bit uncomfortable. If they had only cleared the fly-by with HQ, nobody would have said a thing. I would bet the reality of the situation is it surprised somebody and they felt like they had to act. I don't believe safety was compromised and beyond that, no laws were broken either.
Sacked for that!......if the airline management couldn't trust the crew perform that flyby it's a sad reflection.....health and safety gone mad again.
@timber733 there are actually very strict guidelines regarding a flyby and minimum altitude, that is very clearly a violation and is tantamount to gross misconduct and disregard of rules. it's sad, but the punishment does fit the crime.
@kibz2005 As a pilot myself I can certainly agree with you but only to a point. As far as this incident is concerned the handling of the aircraft was not reckless, now you could argue it was reckless simply because the commander acted without permission, well, in my book the only thing that really mattered is....was safety compromised? In my opinion it was not, an ill-considered manoeuvre perhaps but worth the ending of what was probably a distinguished career.
@timber733 hey, yeah i'm a pilot myself. nice to find another one on here :-) I'd say the issue of him being fired was probably more to do with the reputation of the airline to be honest. he/she was obviously a good stick, but it's like with an instrument approach, minima is minima no matter what the excuse. disciplinary action was taken as an example to anybody else who thought they could bust regs even if they judged the safety risk to be minimal.oh well, we in GA welcome another! :)
@kibz2005 well I am not in GA but due respect to those that are, many happy days in that comany (now for my sin's Royal Air Force). As I understand matters senoir airline management happened to be aboard the aircraft on said event so I imagine the commander thought he was perhaps promoting the company in the course of his actions, in passing, I would be interested to know what disiplinary actions were taken actions against the co-pilot, since technically he was equally culpable.
@timber733 In my opinion ( as a pilot ) safety was most definitely compromised. A minimum altitude would have been agreed in pilots briefing ( as per company policy and rules which are set with manufacturers input ) This was a very basic violation . I am sure he / she is a fine pilot , but that is not the point ! kibz2005 is exactly correct , this IS gross misconduct.
This was said when chief test pilot Tex Johnson for Boeing rolled the prototype 707 during a demonstration flight. Mr. Boeing to Tex..."you know you can do it and I know you can do it...now don't ever do it again."
Dumb beyond belief, That pilot now has to find a new career. Once a pilot get fired he no longer can be ever hired by another airline again due to insurance rules. I hope it was worth it.
@LeBronForTheWin The airline co. had a royal fit that the pilot took this kind of unauthorized risk with a plane full of passengers ! They figured it was bad for public relations.
@LeBronForTheWin mmmmmh....actually no it didn't !!! optical illusion ,sorry !! i think they banned it for the same reason the pilot got sacked!!! fly dangerously too low !!!
This used to be a standard little show for the departing a/c on it's delivery flight. Not at all dangerous. Cathay just threw their toys out of their pram because it was in their livery. They should have just said 'stop'. There was no need at all to take any action against the crew. Only Bean-Counters could dream that kind of shit up...!
@HeavensGremlin It was actually the DFO - Capt Wilkinsons boss who recommended a demotion and slap on the wrist simply because he wasn't authorised for displays. The person whose toys came out of the pram was the Chairman Christopher Pratt on board who lost it. Big mistake. Wilkinson gave evidence to help the '49ers class action against Cathay and now most of the former and current executives and the AoA ex heads are facing criminal charges. Not everyone on YT is a flight sim wannabe pilot!
@razinblazer The fly-by was unauthorized. The Capt. Wilkinson did this during their delivery of the 777 and had no previous authorization to perform a fly-by. The airline responded by firing him.
@ShelbyGT500TT@PhillipTG1984 Either way, if they can fly like that, that's damn amazing. That's pure skill. Firing them dosen't make sense. I'd love to be a passenger on his plane.
I think this is the fourth comment I've ever posted on a youtube video... but I wish I would've popped my commenting cherry on this video... if for no other reason than to say HOLY FUCKAMOLY!
@rumvodkaf1 This was almost 4 years ago at the Boeing factory in Everett, Washington, where they make the 747, 767, 777 and 787. I plane-spot in that very parking lot often. It's a blast to see them come and go. I watched the very first flights of the 787 and 747-8 there, too.
@Peichen01 it is Everett. And it was the delivery flight of the 777-300ER by Cathay. Fly pass was not authorized by Cathay management. The capt was sacked. The co-pilot was suspended. Quite a number of VIP passengers were on board, including the CEO, and they weren't quite impressed. But, I was!
...how about doing a BARREL-ROLL for the camera??!!! All these low-passes are getting BORING already. Lets see some BARREL-ROLLS in jumbo jets already.
@MrFlightfan its call slow flight which is the configuration set up to land but when you add a bit of power you could maintain altitude and thats what he did.
@MrJwill919 It's not really a huge risk, just because these ships are massive it doesn't mean they do not have quite good authority at low speeds, because they certainly do and they also certainly have a hell of a lot of power. Just because they are low and slow it doesn't mean this is anymore dangerous than being low and slow in a cessna 182 loitering down the runway at 60knts.
@viper8red 60knts isn't loitering in a 182 its rotation. This guy mainly lost his job because he had never flown a display in his life. Cathay do have a display crew of mostly ex RAAF Roulettes and RAF Red Arrows but this guy wasn't one.
@gnarkillkicksass No 52kts is rotation in a cessna 182. Vs (stall speed w/o flaps) is 56. Hence why I said about 60knots.. just barely above stall speed.
This fly-by must have been planned, because everybody seems to be expecting it. And yet Cathay fired the pilot. Does anybody know what the occasion was?
@RajeevSamant I beg your pardon, but that's not Heathrow at all. It happened in Seattle; I know every single corner around Heathrow's perimeter and I can tell you there's not such a spotting place, unfortunately. If you have doubts, look at the car plates: they're US and LHD. Respectfully. Peace to you, Rgds
@TheBigPrawn Best airline I have ever flown. I am only 14 but I have flown BA, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Qantas and many other major and budget airlines and Cathay Pacific was by far the most outstanding! :)
That's what you do on your last day before retirement! Go out like a cowboy.
It's obviously well within limits anyway. The pilot would have known the weight of the plane and appropriate minimums, and everybody gets a good show.
You made an amazingly impressive display that inspires onlookers and passengers and shows them how skilled our Cathay Pacific pilots are.....YOU'RE FIRED!
I can promise this is real. I work at Boeing, Everett. I was watching from the fuel docks. In the background you can see the Dreamlifter, the oversize 747. That is where I was standing. I cannot confirm the story of the pilot being fired then rehired. This is not illegal, just not recommended. FYI: Cathay Pacific has beautiful 777's. One of the nicest interiors. lol AND GREAT PILOTS!
lol yeah do this if your medical expires tomorrow or you get another job (not flying aircraft), besides the autpoilot would be making sure that stayed at that altittude

I cannot confirm the story of the pilot being fired then rehired. This is not illegal, just not recommended. FYI: Cathay Pacific has beautiful 777's. One of the nicest interiors. lol AND GREAT PILOTS!

Holy shit no flaps no gear and that low! This pilot is either extremely careless or one hell of a good pilot!
