there is a better way to do this. the cymbal is not gonna look as good but the sound is going to be more full.... this way as shown in this video decreases the sound on the cymbal. at first may sound good but after you cut it again and again is going to sound like a worthless piece of junk. I worked in a rehearsal studio where they had the cymbals cut like this.
but then I learned theres a better way when I started working in the modern drum shop in nyc.
I hear a lot of people say that you'll ruin the sound by re-sizing a cymbal like that. But it's not necessarily true. It WILL change the sound. Cutting out a notch will also change the sound. There are also certain tones that are somewhat noticeable especially when recording that can really do strange things with a notch cut out.
@generatrix999 I know that is the common believe but actually my drummer is digging it a lot, considering he saved $250, and using it as a crash ride, i can honestly say that it is still a "usable" cymbal. Remember these machines are very accurate and also it is a cold process that does not alter the overall structure and hardness of the metal
@generatrix999 I actually beg to differ. I'm using Zildjian Planet Z's at the moment. I originally bought the 4 piece set (Hats, Crash, Ride) but later decided I wanted a Crash/Ride too, so I bought the 3 piece set (Hats, Crash/Ride).
I was like "Oh, now I have two extra Hi-hats sitting around doing nothing..."
Guess what? Now I have a 14" Splash/Crash and a 10" Splash that I cut, and it sounds fantastic. Goes amazingly with the rest of my cymbals.
@nouralewiwi Oh, trust me, it is! But it's a practice kit - so when I upgrade my cymbals to some A Customs I'll still have the same skill and know roughly what sounds to expect but it won't sound like I'm hitting glassy tin. =)
I have to say though, the 10" cut splash sounds amazing. Very glassy and cutting and doesn't have a very long sustain.
I also drilled 3 holes in my bottom hat. Sounds alot better. Better foot response, and eliminated the crappy hollow sound inherent in Planet Z hats.
@generatrix999 tell that to Gavin Harrison ! He's fashioned some beautiful bell chimes by cutting down crash cymbals which are now a signature part of his sound. NEVER say never. Some of the worlds best innovations and discoveries come out of saying "what if it works?" rather than "that'll never work"
@generatrix999 Maybe, But I think a lot of people would agree that once there is a crack in it its pretty much screwed anyways, so you have to cut or drill to make it last, I think this is a great video, and heck if you can keep it from breaking in half and still have like he said a "usable" cymbal then why not? Plus I mean he is cutting it with water which I find to be pretty dam cool.
im so confused how du you get this machine????

@drummer790
How much is a new cymbal of any quality? $100 or more?
You could have this done for less than half that. It's a simple machine that cuts with water. I've seen them cut granite 3" thick.

@alwaysopen wait, how does this cut with water?

2. Resize
3. Repeat
If you keep doing that you'll end up with a Zil-Bel XD

erikimba 9 months ago
Considering that the cymbal is already cracked which absolutely ruins the sound, I really don't think that resizing is going to do too much damage.

The worst thing you can do to a cymbal, the sound is wrecked once you change diameter in relation to original shape
