I remember one time I acted a bit like the wolf. When I found out my sister had accidentally broken a pretty plate we had, I told her "that was my favorite plate" in a tone similar to the wolf's. But I ended it there. I didn't start chasing her.
Why do salesmen always have to be so annoying? Whenever someone tries to sell me magazine subscriptions, I just slam the door in their face, and whenever someone wants me to fill out a survey at the mall, I just keep walking.
'Hazzah, hazzah, hazzah!' - I remember that line from the salesman. Was that his 'sales pitch line' to try to serenade people into buying something (like Lefty does in 'Would You Like to Buy an 'O'?) I also remember the line about Kermit saying that the audience 'missed the first part.' I wonder if there was any purpose to that - maybe just to make things interesting? Just curious. Thanks for posting!
I wonder what it'd be like if Kermit the Frog ever interviewed the Wolf from "Red Hot Riding Hood?" Kermit would probably get whacked in the face by the Wolf's bugging-out eyes :P
You've got good ears! And also funny is the woodsman repeating "I certainly did" into the microphone. Also, when Riding Hood bumps into something and apologizes to the wolf.
LOL, you're right. He had to perform three different characters in just two minutes! Talk about impressive, compared to Henson as Kermit, Jerry Nelson as the wolf, and Richard Hunt as Red.
Back when Sesame Street was GREAT and funny and wonderful...as opposed to the politically-correct garbage bore-fest they put out now. Thanks for posting this!!!
They were actually trying to be politically-correct around the mid-70s. I guess they went overboard on it. They still also occasionally show classic Sesame Street segments each new season. Plus, the recent season last year was an improvement over the past few seasons.
Is it just me, or did Jerry Nelson always have to play the Big Bad Wolf? I know that he used his Herry Monster voice for the character. And the Wolf puppet is obviously a refurbished Herry Monster puppet.
Yes it is Frank Oz. I recognize Richard Hunt's voice as Red Riding Hood, and Jerry Nelson always plays the Big Bad Wolf, and of course Jim Henson was Kermit.
Do you notice Kermit's mic. yank to the right after Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf 'trip' over the mic cord??? Stuff only us adults would notice.
Also, I wonder why Fran Brill didn't perform in these 1970s News Flashes? She was working with the show during this period, and she would've made a better Red Riding Hood than Richard Hunt did. I think she began doing characters in the News Flashes in the 1980s.
I know they based a book off of this sketch, and they replaced Kermit the Frog with Grover narrating the story, and the orange salesman was replaced with Lefty (from "Would You Like to Buy an O?") I think I remember reading the book as a kid.
The other changes they made in the book are: they do buy the encyclopedias, and instead of the wolf getting a letter, Little Red Riding Hood got a letter.
Pardon me, sir, Kermit The Frog of Sesame Street News. Are you the Woodsman? No, I'm the mailman! Great stuff. I don't think that I've ever seen this News Flash before. The Woodsman cut down the Wolf's favorite tree! How cute is that. Thanks again. :)
Not only that, but the Big Bad Wolf looks kinda like Herry Monster! They had to redesign the wolf puppet in the late 1980s to a lavender-colored version.

"Come on, frog, take a chance!" LOL! I don't think anyone in those "News Flash"
sketches ever called Kermit by his name.

I'd forgotten how Jim gave Kermit a little more of a "dese an' dose" diction in those early days. Funny stuff.

You can hear Jim Henson crack up a bit from Jerry Nelson's ad lib at 00:21.

Yep. It's not every day when Frank Oz has to play three characters in one skit.
wiley207 3 years ago
Remember that this isn't the only time he did this. There was also the song "Take a Rest" where Bert, Cookie Monster, and Grover had to sing.

Blame it on Nick Jr and Barney! they corrupted it. Those shows ruined children's televsion for everyone.
I love how the wolf looks and sounds like Herry
mightyfilm 4 years ago
I agree! You should also blame it on Dora the Explorer, and the new shows that were added on PBS kids last year.

Woodsman:I certainly did.
Wolf:That was my favorite tree!

I think this is from between 1972 and 1974, since Kermit has the brown hat and Richard Hunt is a newcomer around this period.
